Experimental data for the motor learning study performed: "Promoting Motor Variability During Robotic Assistance Enhances Motor Learning of Dynamic Tasks"
<p>The dataset contains the kinematic data and the questionnaire responses for a robot-assisted motor learning study performed in the Motor Learning and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory at University of Bern. The details of the study are described in [doi: 10.3389/fnins.2020.600059]. The kinematic data for each participant is stored as a data frame inside a “pickle” (serialized python object) file. The questionnaire responses are stored as a “csv” file. The variables inside the files are explained in “DataframeVariableDescription.rtf”. Dataset of "TWIST1 expression is associated with high-risk neuroblastoma and promotes primary and metastatic tumor growth"
<p>The embryonic transcription factors TWIST1/2 are frequently overexpressed in cancer, acting as multifunctional oncogenes. Here we investigate their role in neuroblastoma (NB), a heterogeneous childhood malignancy ranging from spontaneous regression to dismal outcomes despite multimodal therapy. We first reveal the association of TWIST1 expression with poor survival and metastasis in primary NB, while TWIST2 correlates with good prognosis. Secondly, suppression of TWIST1 by CRISPR/Cas9 results in a reduction of tumor growth and metastasis in immunocompromised mice. Moreover, TWIST1 knock-out tumors displays a less aggressive cellular morphology and a reduced disruption of the extracellular matrix (ECM) reticulin network. Additionally, we identify a TWIST1-mediated transcriptional program associated with dismal outcome in NB and involved in the control of pathways mainly linked to the signaling, migration, adhesion, the organization of the ECM, and the tumor cells versus tumor stroma crosstalk. Taken together, our findings identified TWIST1 as novel therapeutic target in NB.</p>

Invasive grass litter suppresses a native grass species and promotes disease
Plant litter can alter ecosystems and promote plant invasions by altering resource availability, depositing phytotoxins, and transmitting microorganisms to living plants. Transmission of microorganisms from invasive plant litter to live plants may gain importance as invasive plants, which often escape pathogens upon introduction to a new range, acquire new pathogens over time. It is unclear, however, if invasive plant litter affects native plant communities by promoting disease. Microstegium vimineum is an invasive grass that suppresses native populations, in part through litter production, and has acquired new fungal leaf spot diseases since its introduction to the United States. In a greenhouse experiment, we evaluated how M. vimineum litter and its pathogens mediated competition with the native grass Elymus virginicus. Microstegium vimineum litter promoted disease on E. virginicus and suppressed establishment and biomass of both species. Litter had stronger negative effects on E. virginicus than M. vimineum, increasing the relative biomass of M. vimineum. Live plant competition reduced biomass of both species and live M. vimineum increased disease incidence on E. virginicus. Altogether, invasive grass litter suppressed both species, ultimately favoring the invasive species in competition, and increased disease incidence on the native species.
Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Data for Stream bryophytes promote cryptic productivity, 2018-2021
This is the data and code associated with "Stream bryophytes promote 'cryptic' productivity in highly oligotrophic headwaters. Recent observations document increased abundance of algae in the headwater streams of Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF). It is possible that this 'greening up' of HBEF streams may be due to climate change with rising temperatures, altered terrestrial phenology, and shifting hydrologic regimes. Alternatively, stream 'greening' could be due to the slow recovery of stream chemistry from decades of acid rain, which have led to rising stream water pH, declining concentrations of toxic Al3+, and extremely low solute concentrations. Three years of weekly algal measurements on contrasting substrates, 6 nutrient enrichment experiments reveal important new insights about the interactions between these two groups of autotrophs. We predicted that light availability, hydrologic disturbance and nutrient limitation were all important determinants of algal biomass in streams. To evaluate the relative strength and hierarchy of these limiting factors, we used nutrient diffusing substrates to investigate the role of nutrients for algae and compared algal accrual rate on artificial rock vs. moss substrates in stream channels vs. weir ponds to assess the role of hydrologic disturbance and scour. Our surveys and experiments spanned across seasons and local light regimes. Algal biomass was substantially higher in protected weir ponds than in stream channels, and in both habitats, algal biomass was substantially higher on artificial moss substrates than on tiles. Taken together, these results suggest that moss can provide physical protection from flood scour. Algal biomass instream on both substrate types was higher in high light seasons (pre-leaf out) and well-lit habitats indicating strong light limitation. Results from a series of 6 nutrient diffusing substrate experiments over the course of 2 years provided little evidence of nutrient limitation instream

Diel vertical migration promotes prokaryotic diversity in the Red Sea mesopelagic
<p>ABSTRACT: The diel vertical migration (DVM) of fish provides an active transport of labile dissolved organic matter (DOM) to the deep ocean, fueling the metabolism of heterotrophic bacteria and archaea. We studied the impact of DVM on the mesopelagic prokaryotic diversity of the Red Sea focusing on the mesopelagic deep scattering layer (DSL) between 450-600 m. Despite the general consensus of homogeneous conditions in the twilight zone, we observed variability in physico-chemical variables and distinct seasonal indicator prokaryotes inhabiting the DSL, representing between 2% (summer) to over 10% (winter) of total sequences. The DSL samples diverged from the surrounding mesopelagic waters in multidimensional scaling analysis and were distributed according to depth (47% of variance explained). We identified the sources of diversity that contribute to the DSL using spring depth profiles. On average, 7% was related to probable sinking from the epipelagic, 34% was common among the other mesopelagic waters and 38% was attributable to the DVM, with 21% of species being unique to the DSL. We conclude that the mesopelagic physico-chemical properties shape a rather uniform prokaryotic community, but that the 200 m wide DSL contributes uniquely and in a high proportion to the diversity of the Red Sea mesopelagic.</p> <p>The raw 16S sequences used in this research article are available at <a href="https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena/browser/view/PRJEB49545">https://www.ebi.ac.uk/ena/browser/view/PRJEB49545</a> as 67 paired fastq sequences with consecutive accession numbers: ERX7411972 – ERX7412038.</p> <p>The 2 files stored in this repository represent: a) the clean 16S sequences count and taxonomic affiliation (SILVA132 Database) and b) the metadata associated to each of the 67 samples (lat, long, temperature, salinity, nutrient concentrations, bacterial abundance, bacterial size, etc)</p>

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <ol> <li>The intensification of farming practices exerts detrimental effects on biodiversity. Most research has focused on declines in species richness at local scales (alpha-diversity) although species loss is exacerbated by biotic homogenization that operates at larger scales (i.e., affecting beta-diversity). The majority of studies have been conducted in temperate, industrialized countries while tropical areas remain poorly studied. Agricultural landscapes of sub-Saharan Africa are still largely dominated by small-scale subsistence farming, but strenuous efforts to intensify farming practices are currently spreading to meet a growing food demand. It is therefore crucial to understand how these intensified practices affect biodiversity to mitigate their negative impacts. </li> <li>We investigated how farming system (small- vs large-scale farming) and landscape complexity (semi-natural vegetation cover) drive bird species composition, community turnover, and beta-diversity patterns in Ethiopian Highlands’ agroecosystems. We evaluated the following hypotheses: (1) large-scale farming homogenizes bird communities, (2) community turnover is higher in small-scale farms, (3) interactive effects between landscape complexity and farming systems shape avian communities, (4) heterogeneity of field sizes increases community turnover at larger scales. </li> <li>Bird communities underwent greater compositional changes along the landscape complexity than along the agricultural intensity gradient. Contrary to our expectations, beta-diversity was not significantly lower within large-scale farms (no biotic homogenization), and complex landscapes that still offer a high amount of semi-natural vegetation promoted community turnover in both farming systems. </li> <li>Semi-natural vegetation cover mediated how avian communities responded to agricultural intensification: the compositional differences between small- and large-scale farms increased with vegetation cover, further promoting avian community heterogeneity at the landscape level.</li> <li>The heterogeneity in field sizes also enhanced bird community turnover, suggesting that a combination of both small- and large-scale farming systems within a given landscape unit would promote beta-diversity at larger scales, provided large-scale farms do not become dominant.</li> <li>Synthesis and applications: Landscape complexity shaped avian communities to a stronger degree than farming intensity, emphasizing the importance of semi-natural vegetation and landscape heterogeneity for the maintenance of diverse bird communities and for achieving multifunctional landscapes promoting biodiversity and associated ecosystem services on the High Ethiopian plateaus. <br> </li> </ol>
Datasets and results of the paper titled "Are citation networks relevant to explain academic promotions? An empirical analysis of the Italian national scientific qualification"

An empirical analysis of the Italian national scientific qualification"</strong>.</p> <p><strong>Abstract:</strong> </p> <p>The aim of this paper is to study the role of citation network measures in the assessment of scientific maturity. Referring to the case of the Italian national scientific qualification (ASN), we investigate if there is a relationship between citation network indices and the results of the researchers’ evaluation procedures. In particular, we want to understand if network measures can enhance the prediction accuracy of the results of the evaluation procedures beyond basic performance indices. Moreover, we want to highlight which citation network indices prove to be more relevant in explaining the ASN results, and if quantitative indices used in the citation-based disciplines assessment can replace the citation network measures in non-citation-based disciplines. Data concerning Statistics and Computer Science disciplines are collected from different sources (ASN, Italian Ministry of University and Research, and Scopus) and processed in order to calculate the citation-based measures used in this study. Following, we apply classification models to estimate the effects of network variables. We find that network measures are strongly related to the results of the ASN and significantly improve the explanatory power of the models, especially for the research fields of Statistics. Additionally, citation networks in the specific sub-disciplines are far more relevant than those in the general disciplines.
