Antifungal activity of propolis extract against Candida albicans in patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis

<p>Abstract</p> <p><strong>Objective:</strong> To evaluate the antifungal activity of propolis extract against <em>Candida Albicans</em> (or <em>C. Albicans</em>) in patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis.</p> <p><strong>Method:</strong> The research presents a quantitative approach with an experimental design, with a population of <em>C. Albicans</em> strains isolated from patients diagnosed with vulvovaginal candidiasis who were admitted to the Gynecology Service of the Maria del Socorro Clinic, district of Ate - Lima, from which a sample of 34 strains was chosen in total, considering three repetitions per strain, obtaining 102 experimental units.</p> <p>The antifungal susceptibility test was carried out by the disc diffusion plate method using a single concentration of propolis extract, with fluconazole as a positive control.</p> <p><strong>Resultados:</strong> Propolis extract was shown to inhibit all strains of <em>C. albicans</em>, as was fluconazole, with the effect of the latter being significantly greater than that of the product under investigation.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> The conclusion is that propolis extract does show antifungal activity against <em>C. albicans</em> in patients with vulvovaginal candidiasis.</p> <p><strong>Keywords:</strong> Propolis extract, <em>Candida Albicans</em>, Antifungal activity, Vulvovaginal candidiasis.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Honeybee microbiome is stabilized in the presence of propolis

<p>Honey bees have developed many unique mechanisms to help ensure the proper maintenance of homeostasis within the hive. One specific method includes the collection of antimicrobial plant resins and wax to form propolis, which is deposited throughout the hive. Propolis is believed to play a significant role in reducing disease load in the colony due to its antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. However, little is known on how propolis may be interacting with the commensal bacteria of the hive and if propolis alters the microbial community structure. In this study, we demonstrate that propolis appears to maintain a stable microbial community composition and reduce the overall diversity of the total honey bee microbiome. Several key members of the honey bee gut microbiota were significantly altered in the absence of propolis suggesting that it may play an important role in maintaining favorable levels of commensal bacteria. Overall, these findings demonstrate that propolis may help to maintain honey bee colony microbial health by limiting changes to the overall microbial community.</p>

Land use influences the composition and antimicrobial effects of propolis

<p>Honey bee propolis is a complex, resinous mixture created by bees using plant sources such as leaves, flowers, and bud exudates. This study characterized how cropland surrounding apiaries affects the chemical composition and antimicrobial effects of propolis. The chemical composition and compound abundance of the propolis samples were analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and the antimicrobial effects were analyzed using the 50% minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC<sub>50</sub>) assay against four relevant bee pathogens, <span class="html-italic">Serratia marcescens, Paenibacillus larvae, Lysinibacillus sphaericus,</span> and <span class="html-italic">Klebsiella pneumoniae</span>. Propolis composition varied significantly with apiary, and cropland coverage predicted mean sum abundance of compounds. The apiary with the highest cropland coverage exhibited significantly higher MIC<sub>50</sub> values for <span class="html-italic">S. marcescens</span> and <span class="html-italic">K. pneumoniae</span> compared to other apiaries. These results demonstrate that agricultural land use surrounding honey bee apiaries decreases the chemical quality and antimicrobial effects of propolis, which may have implications for the impacts of land use on hive immunity to potential pathogens.</p>
