Survey of Pacific Northwest public land managers science and values project, 2023
This dataset records survey data about public land managers who work in Oregon and Washington (Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Oregon Department of Forestry, Washington Department of Natural Resources). Data was collected in 2023 via the online survey platform Qualtrics. Data collection is complete. The dataset includes measures of managers beliefs about 1) variable density thinning of mature growth forests, 2) salvage logging of burned areas, 3) translocation of plant species from hotter and drier seed zones to adapt to climate change. It includes how managers evaluate the usefulness of scientific evidence and the soundness of action prescriptions for each of the three management issues Respondents were randomly assigned to either receive long-term or short-term studies, and positive or negative results. The dataset includes measures of sense of belonging (how much managers believe they belong at their workplace) and measures of public support/public threat (how much they believe the public understands and supports the actions they take on the landscape). The dataset includes respondent agency.
SBC LTER: Land: Hydrology: Daily precipitation from Santa Barbara County Flood Control (Public Works Department)
These daily total precipitation data represent legacy data obtained by SBC LTER from the the Santa Barbara County Flood Control District for several coastal watersheds draining into the Santa Barbara Channel (California, USA). Starting in 2001, SBC also began archive high-frequency data from County stations with active data loggers which are available in other SBC data packages. These data were collected in accordance with current industry standards. The data are contained in 3 tables, for stations with active data loggers and tipping gauges, active stations with other types of gauges, and inactive stations. Only data collected with tipping gauges and data loggers can be interpolated to to the resolution required by SBC's research objectives, and so only this data table will be updated (annually, at the end of the water year).

<p>These are the code and data files for "Biodiversity on public lands: how citizen science can help". Included in this are the following:</p> <p>1. taxataxi_opt_multiple_reports.R which is code for running multiple iNaturalist Bioblitz datasets with built in re-setting mechanisms for the various reports run.</p> <p>2. iNat_NPS_comparison_code.R which is code for running a single iNaturalist Bioblitz dataset. This is identical to (1) except for the re-setting mechanisms and some re-organization of parts of the code.</p> <p>3. synonym_links & taxonomic_units which are used in conjunction with (1) & (2) for the synonym identification.</p> <p>4. SGS-LTER GIS layer with detailed information on Public Land Survey on Central Plains Experimental Range, Nunn, Colorado, USA 2012
This data package was produced by researchers working on the Shortgrass Steppe Long Term Ecological Research (SGS-LTER) Project, administered at Colorado State University. Long-term datasets and background information (proposals, reports, photographs, etc.) on the SGS-LTER project are contained in a comprehensive project collection within the Digital Collections of Colorado (http://digitool.library.colostate.edu/R/?func=collections&collection_id=3429). The data table and associated metadata document, which is generated in Ecological Metadata Language, may be available through other repositories serving the ecological research community and represent components of the larger SGS-LTER project collection. Ohio Public Land Survey (PLS) Witness Tree GIS Shapefile
The United States Public Land Survey (PLS) divided land into one square mile units, termed sections. Surveyors used trees to locate section corners and other locations of interest (witness trees). As a result, a systematic ecological dataset was produced with regular sampling over a large region of the United States, beginning in Ohio in 1786 and continuing westward. We digitized and georeferenced archival hand drawn maps of these witness trees for 27 counties in Ohio. This dataset consists of a GIS point shapefile with 11,925 points located at section corners, recording 26,028 trees (up to four trees could be recorded at each corner). We retain species names given on each archival map key, resulting in 70 unique species common names. PLS records were obtained from hand-drawn archival maps of original witness trees produced by researchers at The Ohio State University in the 1960’s. Scans of these maps are archived as “The Edgar Nelson Transeau Ohio Vegetation Survey” at The Ohio State University: http://hdl.handle.net/1811/64106. The 27 counties are: Adams, Allen, Auglaize, Belmont, Brown, Darke, Defiance, Gallia, Guernsey, Hancock, Lawrence, Lucas, Mercer, Miami, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Noble, Ottawa, Paulding, Pike, Putnam, Scioto, Seneca, Shelby, Williams, Wyandot. Data from: Comparing forest structure and biodiversity on private and public land: secondary tropical dry forests in Costa Rica
Secondary forests constitute a substantial proportion of tropical forestlands. These forests occur on both public and private lands and different underlying environmental variables and management regimes may affect post‐abandonment successional processes and resultant forest structure and biodiversity. We examined whether differences in ownership led to differences in forest structure, tree diversity, and tree species composition across a gradient of soil fertility and forest age. We collected soil samples and surveyed all trees in 82 public and 66 private 0.1‐ha forest plots arrayed across forest age and soil gradients in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. We found that soil fertility appeared to drive the spatial structure of public vs. private ownership; public conservation lands appeared to be non‐randomly located on areas of lower soil fertility. On private lands, areas of crops/pasture appeared to be non‐randomly located on higher soil fertility areas while forests occupied areas of lower soil fertility. We found that forest structure and tree species diversity did not differ significantly between public and private ownership. However, public and private forests differed in tree species composition: 11 percent were more prevalent in public forest and 7 percent were more prevalent in private forest. Swietenia macrophylla, Cedrela odorata, and Astronium graveolens were more prevalent in public forests likely because public forests provide stronger protection for these highly prized timber species. Guazuma ulmifolia was the most abundant tree in private forests likely because this species is widely consumed and dispersed by cattle. Furthermore, some compositional differences appear to result from soil fertility differences due to non‐random placement of public and private land holdings with respect to soil fertility. Land ownership creates a distinctive species composition signature that is likely the result of differences in soil fertility and management between the ownership types. Both biophysical and social variables should be considered to advance understanding of tropical secondary forest structure and biodiversity.
