Santa Barbara Channel Marine BON: Nearshore kelp forest integrated quad and swath survey, 1980-ongoing
The Santa Barbara Channel Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (SBCMBON) tracks long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. This dataset contains counts of algae and invertebrates (both sessile and mobile) by integrating data from four contributing projects working in the kelp forests of the Santa Barbara Channel, USA. The four contributing projects are two research projects: The Santa Barbara Coastal LTER (SBC LTER) and the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO), the kelp forest monitoring program of the Santa Barbara Channel National Park, and the San Nicolas Island monitoring program supported by USGS. Together, these projects have recorded data for more than 200 species at approximately 100 sites on both the mainland coast and on the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. Sampling began in 1982 and is ongoing. Data were collected by human observation (divers using SCUBA) during regular surveys. The data table documents the number of organisms and the area over which that number was counted for calculation of areal abundance. Data were collected by human observation (divers using SCUBA) during regular surveys. The algae and invertebrate counts record the number of taxa found in each plot, including quad (small square plots such as 1 or 2 m2) and swath (large linear plots such as 60 m2). See Method and protocol for information on integration and data processing. MBON is funded by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). For users who are interested in using all or part of this integrated datasets, please contact data owners to discuss your research interests, data-related issues or any other questions. A recommended citation for the data package is available from the download page. SBC LTER: Reef: Benthic Composition Experiment: photo quad
These data quantify recruitment and percent cover of invertebrates and algae recruiting across five sampling sites (Arroyo Quemado, Naples, Isla Vista, Mohawk, and Carpentaria) along the Santa Barbara Coast and two sites at Santa Cruz Island (San Pedro Point and Cavern Point). Sampling began Sep 2021 and is conducted seasonally every three months. A housed Canon 5DR SLR camera with a 16 mm lens, two strobes, and a 25x35 cm quadrat is used to collect photographs for data collection on all 24 rock plates, 24 PVC recruitment plates, and 24 control quadrats within two circular plots at each site. Plot 1 represents the control plot with no giant kelp removal and plot 2 represents the kelp clearing plot where all giant kelp is removed. Photographs are uploaded to a cloud-based image analysis platform (ViQi) and point contact analysis is conducted on 100 points in the lab. Occasionally, additional points were collected to show the presence of interested species or lifestage (e.g., kelp recruit). After all photographs have been taken, all recruitment plates are cleaned and all erect understory algae are removed seasonally from half of the rock plates for both plots (Plot 1 rock plates #1-6 and Plot 2 rock plates #13-18) to measure seasonal recruitment. Recruitment is measured as a proportion of the number of individuals found in each photograph. Data are contained in one table depicting seasonally collected invertebrate and algae recruitment and their percent cover for given sites and sampling periods.
Plant Cover at Permanent Quad Locations on the Jornada Experimental Range, 1915-ongoing
This ongoing data set contains basal cover of perennial grasses and canopy cover of shrubs in 122 1m x 1m quadrats on the Jornada Experimental Range in the northern extent of the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico, USA. These quadrats were established to investigate livestock grazing effects on plant community dynamics as well as responses to variable climatic conditions over time. Vegetation monitoring is carried out by charting the basal areas of perennial grasses and canopy areas of shrubs within each quadrat. Quadrats were established at different times, with start dates from 1915 to 1932. Specific quadrat locations were selected for a variety of reasons, but the overall intent was to represent varying plant community conditions across the Jornada Experimental Range. From 1915 to 1924 charting was done by dividing the quadrat frame into a decimeter grid using straps and reproducing locations of plants on grid paper. From 1925 to 2016 charting was done using a pantograph. With few exceptions, quadrats were charted until 1947, and a portion of the quadrats were charted intermittently between 1947 and 1979. Sampling resumed again in 1995 and continues every 5-6 years. Charts are digitally scanned, georeferenced, and chart features are digitally reproduced by hand. This data set is not yet complete; charts are actively being processed by Jornada Experimental Range staff and will be updated to this data package as they become available. A companion data package of counts of perennial forbs and subshrubs for each quadrat is also available for this project (data package knb-lter-jrn.210351002).

Snakeweed Patch Vegetation Quad Data at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, NM (1984, 1996)
In 1984, a research project was initiated on a relatively small disturbance patch just south of Deep Well. This disturbance was thought to be the result of an old praire dog town, probably dating back to when a nearby ranch was active, and a lot of old mammal mounds remained in the disturbed area. One of the things that made the disturbance patch particularily noticeable was the lush growth of snakeweed (Gutierrezia sarothrae) within the patch. This prompted the designation of the disturbance patch as the "snakeweed patch" or "Gutierrezia patch." In addition, there was an obvious increase in bare ground and a shift in vegetation composition across the patch boundary. The dominant vegetation was not consistent around the boundary, with a marked dominance of black grama on the west side of the plot and a blue/black grama mix on the other three sides. To obtain information on the cause and/or effect of this disturbance, a survey of the soil and vegetation was performed. This database contains information collected during the vegetation monitoring that was done on the plot in 1984, as well as a follow-up measurement done in 1996. By 1996, virtually all of the snakeweed had died due to a dry period.

Experimental characterization of TERIPHIC quad InP EML array - Generation and transmission of 50Gbaud signals with NRZ and PAM-4 modulation formats

The data sets refer to the results from the experimental characterization conducted on the TERIPHIC quad InP-EML array, which operates in the O-band. Each EML incorporates a DFB laser, an Electroabsorption modulator, and a Semiconductor Optical Amplifier to provide additional power boost, all on the same die. Three out of the four EMLs were characterized successively and generated signals at symbol rates of 50 Gbaud and transmitted them over various fiber lengths. The modulated optical signals were detected by a single commercially avalaible photodetector with more than 70 GHz 3-dB bandwidth. The generated electrical signals were then sampled by a real-time oscilloscope with a 256 Gbaud sample rate. A low-pass filter with a 50 GHz 3-dB cut-off frequency was digitally applied to the oscilloscope to improve the signal-to-noise ratio.
The data sets have a filename in the format “Symbol rate#Modulation formats#EMLn#Transmission length#version.bin”, where
SYmbol rate = 50 Gbaud
EMLn, for n= 2, 3, 4
Transmission length = B2B (0 km), 2 km, and 10 km
Version: v1, v2 and v3. Same operating parameters but at different time index

The data sets are parts of the Open data management plan of the TERIPHIC ICT project (GA No. 825502)

SBC LTER: REEF: Annual benthic transect photo quad
This dataset is produced by analyzing nearly 1800 images in a cloud-based image analysis platform ViQi. The images were collected in SBC LTER’s long term benthic monitoring transects. This addition to our cloud environment will continue to improve our visual and interactive Connoisseur models. This project aims to contribute images and corresponding taxa to cloud-based image analysis system. We also compare the difference between benthic survey conducted by divers and using photo-quad imagery analysis. The images in this data set were collected during LTER’s 2018 benthic survey period. This data package includes two data tables: 1) percent cover of invertebrates, algae and fish from all of the SBC LTER’s benthic transects, as well as image location and water depth 2) the images download links for all images used in the analysis.
