Seismic profiles, diatom and microfossil assemblages, and radiocarbon ages for constructing a post-glacial sea level curve from Fiordland, New Zealand

Two research cruises (12PL027 and 13PL018) were conducted aboard the University of Otago RV Polaris II in 2012 and 2013 to collect marine sediment cores and 2d seismic data as part of a collaborative research effort to study late-Pleistocene and Holocene environmental change in New Zealand. Data includes 4 Boomer seismic profiles, 4 CHIRP seismic profiles, seismic line GPS tracks, diatom assemblages (raw counts and relative abundances) and microfossil assemblages (raw counts and relative abundances), and radiocarbon ages from 4 marine sediment cores. The data used to construct a post-glacial sea level curve for Fiordland, New Zealand are also included, as well as data from published literature plotted for global comparisons. These data accompany the publication: Dlabola. E.K., Wilson, G.S., Gorman, A.R., Riesselman, C.R., and Moy, C.M. 2015. A post-glacial sea-level curve from Fiordland, New Zealand. The age distribution of global soil carbon inferred from radiocarbon measurements

<p>We use 789 radiocarbon (∆14C) profiles, along with other geospatial information, to create globally-gridded datasets of mineral soil ∆14C and mean age. The spatial resolution is 0.5 degree by 0.5 degree and the vertical resolution is at each 1 cm increment to a soil depth of 1 meter.</p>

Dataset: Timing the emergence and development of arable farming in Southeastern Norway by using summed probability distribution of radiocarbon dates and a Bayesian age model

<p>The repository contains radiocarbon&nbsp;data&nbsp;and code for the paper</p> <p>TIMING THE EMERGENCE AND DEVELOPMENT OF ARABLE FARMING IN 7 SOUTHEASTERN NORWAY BY USING SUMMED PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION 8 OF RADIOCARBON DATES AND A BAYESIAN AGE MODEL</p> <p>Published in Radiocarbon 2021 (DOI:10.1017/RDC.2021.80)&nbsp;</p> <p>ABSTRACT. The paper explores the emergence and development of arable farming in southeastern Norway by 12 compiling and analyzing directly dated cereals from archaeological contexts. By using summed probability 13 distributions of radiocarbon dates and Bayesian modeling, the paper presents the first comprehensive analysis of 14 the directly dated evidence for farming in the region. The models provide a more precise temporal resolution to 15 the development than hitherto presented. The results demonstrate that the introduction of arable farming to 16 southeastern Norway was a long-term development including several steps. Three different stages are pointed out 17 as important in the process of establishing arable farming: the Early and Middle Neolithic, the Late Neolithic, and 18 the Early Iron Age.</p>

Radiocarbon ages of 6 ancient holm oaks growing in Montecristo Island, Italy

<p>Here we present radiocarbon dates of 6 large and ancient holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) trees collected in Montecristo Island (Tuscany, Italy), reported in the paper &ldquo;Rediscovering Montecristo&rsquo;s treasure: the island&rsquo;s holm oaks reveal exceptional longevity&rdquo; published in Ecology in 2023. The knowledge of the potential maximum lifespans of trees is a key trait for understanding ecosystem functioning and dynamics. However, old trees present often rotten and hollow trunks; moreover, in Mediterranean environment, false and missing rings can further complicate tree-ring studies. Radiocarbon dating is an interesting solution to overcome these problems. Rotten wood samples were collected from the inner and lowest part of each trunk as close as possible to the hypothesized root &ldquo;collar&rdquo; and pith. All the sampled wood fragments showed a moderate tree-ring curvature, but we were not able to calculate a reliable estimate of pith-offset (i.e. of the number of missing rings between the innermost annual increment samples and the pith). However, because of the pith offset and the vertical sampling distance from the collar (up to 1 m), radiocarbon dates may have underestimated tree age by a few decades. Radiocarbon dating was carried out by AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry) at CEDAD, the &ldquo;Centre of Applied Physics, Dating and Diagnostics&rdquo;, University of Salento, Lecce, Italy. The difference between the calibrated radiocarbon ages and the year 2022 CE was used to calculate the age of each tree. The calculated age range is between 444&plusmn;90 (probability 92.3%) calendar years for the youngest sampled tree and 761&plusmn;42 (probability 91.7%) calendar years for the oldest one.</p>

LBA-ECO CD-08 Radiocarbon Dating of Tree Ages in Amazonas, Acre, and Para in Brazil

This data set reports the ages and growth rates of trees determined by radiocarbon dating (14C) in three Amazonia forests. Tree samples were collected from permanent research plots at ZF2 km 34, Manaus, Amazonas, the Catuaba Experimental Farm, Acre, and the km 83 tower site (logged forest site) in the Tapajos National Forest, Para, between 2001-2003.Samples from 97 individual trees were either tree cores (Manaus and Acre) or a combination of tree cores and slabs cut from stems as part of the logging in the Tapajos National Forest (Para). Radiocarbon dating (14C) was used to determine the age and the mean diameter growth increment of samples from individual trees in various diameter size classes. These measurements can be used to verify and extend short-term diameter increment measurements done with dendrometers and to constrain models of tree demography. There is one comma-separated ASCII data file with this data set.
