Bald cypress radiocarbon and dendrochronological data from trees located in the Altamaha Wildlife Management Area and on Sapelo Island, Georgia, USA

Ancient bald cypress trees buried under anoxic mud on the Altamaha Wildlife Management Area islands were sampled, prepared, radiocarbon dated, and the ringwidths measured for crossdating. Modern bald cypress samples were also obtained from Sapelo Island. Tree rings were measured using a Velmex and Measure J2X software and/or the ObjectJ extension of ImageJ. Measured radii were crossdated using visual dendrochronological methods and Cofecha software. Tree rings anchored to the present date back to 3161 B.C.E. and extend to 2016 C.E. In addition, the oldest two trees provide another 529 years of ringwidth data. This work was conducted under the National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Award: Human Adaptation to Long Term Environmental Change (Award #1834682). All samples are part of the accessioned collections of the University of Georgia Laboratory's of Archaeology.

Radiocarbon Data from Middle Horizon Sites in the Upper Majes Valley, Arequipa Peru

In 2019, fifteen AMS radiocarbon dates were obtained across four Middle Horizon (AD 600-1000) sites located in the upper Majes Valley in Arequipa, Peru. These include Wari contexts from the sites Pakaytambo and El Tambo, and local road waystations of Santa Rosa II and La Angostura. Dating of both construction and abandonment contexts indicate these sites correspond to the late Middle Horizon, a time of intense connectivity in the prehistoric Andes and Wari state expansionism.

This data is a component of the PhD dissertation entitled Networks of Empire: The Role of Infrastructure in Wari State Expansion in Arequipa, Peru (AD 600-1000) by David A. Reid (University of Illinois at Chicago).

Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation’s Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Award (#1854651).

Leaf radiocarbon data from two plant species in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA 2020

Over half of Earth’s human population lives in urban areas, where pollution from carbon-based fossil fuel combustion threatens air quality and public health, and contributes significantly to the rapid increase of greenhouse gases. The isotopic composition of plant tissues can be used as a tool to estimate local variation in fossil fuel-derived carbon dioxide and thus contributions of fossil fuel combustion to the local atmosphere in urban anthromes. We present a case study that examines this variation in leaf modern radiocarbon content against a backdrop of historic discriminatory policies (here, ‘redlining’), within Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA. Radiocarbon values from leaves suggest varied distribution of atmospheric fossil fuel derived carbon emissions across Saint Paul greenspaces, with evidence of higher exposure near areas of high-volume traffic. Similar studies rarely measure plant material from both perennial and annual plants: here we report carbon values from leaves from a deciduous tree and an annual forb to compare function differences in carbon age. Isotopic carbon signatures in plant material capture evidence of emissions that may reveal unequal pollution exposure.

Leaf samples were collected in August 2020 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA.
