Atmospheric profiling data collected from radiosondes in the Southern Ocean in the austral summer of 2016/2017 during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition.

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>The data set consists of the vertical profiles of the atmospheric variables measured using radiosondes (i-Met) during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition from November 2016 to April 2017. QBO: monthly zonal stratospheric winds from tropical radiosonde data (mainly Singapore)

<p><strong>Monthly Tropical Stratospheric Zonal Winds from Radiosondes</strong></p> <p><strong>Data Source and Processing:</strong></p> <p>Monthly mean zonal wind data for the tropics are provided as a service for the global QBO and trend analysis communities. The original data source and processing chain were established by the Free University of Berlin (FUB). A dataset of completeness of radiosonde humidity observations based on the IGRA

<p>This dataset describes the completeness of radiosonde humidity observations, from the early times until the end of 2016, based on the sounding data of&nbsp;the Integrated Global Radiosonde Archive (IGRA) Version 2 released by the NOAA&#39;s National Centers for Environmental Information. The IGRA stations for which we have radiosonde data on at least 5% of the annual soundings (radiosonde and pilot balloon observations) for at least one year were evaluated for every year&nbsp;reported in their&nbsp;periods of record&nbsp;according to specified parameters regarding humidity data in the form of either relative humidity or dewpoint-depression.</p> <p>The dataset is divided in three components: 1) Statistical metadata describing humidity completeness on a yearly basis for each station; 2) Metadata describing humidity completeness&nbsp;in individual observations from the same stations; 3) List of the 1723 stations represented in the whole dataset, including their geographic coordinates,&nbsp;along with metadata providing information on the observing periods for humidity and the corresponding amounts of observations. The accompanying Readme file describes the data format and file contents.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Tropospheric delays and precipitable water vapor retrieved from global radiosonde observations from 2014 to 2019

<p>The data consists of a set of meteorological quantities including tropospheric delays (zenith wet delay, zenith hydrostatic delay, and zenith total delay), precipitable water vapor, and surface temperature and pressure. The data is retrieved from the observations of 414 globally distributed radiosonde stations from 2014 to 2019. In addition to the geographic information of radiosonde stations, &nbsp;the profiles of tropospheric delays and precipitable water vapor are contained in the data file. This data has a wide range of applications, e.g., validating the tropospheric delays and precipitable water vapor derived from other techniques, investigating the spatial-temporal variations of water vapor, and acting as training data of machine learning to build tropospheric delay models.</p> <p>In the manuscript &quot;Machine Learning-based Model for Real-time GNSS Precipitable Water Vapor Sensing&quot;,&nbsp; this&nbsp;data is used to train a machine learning model to&nbsp;map&nbsp;the zenith total delays to precipitable water vapor. The data is split into training data and test data, where the data from 2014 to 2018 are employed for model training, and the data of 2019 are used for testing. The developed models and the results for the manuscript are saved in the directories of Models and Results, respectively.</p>

Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai stratospheric water vapor from Vaisala RS41 radiosondes

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption on 15 January 2022 injected unprecedented amounts of water vapor into the stratosphere (Vömel et al., 2022). This data set contains observations using Vaisala RS41 radiosondes obtained in the weeks following the eruption, which were launched as part of the operational upper air network and distributed through the WMO Global Telecommunication System (GTS). It also includes one research sounding using the Cryogenic Frostpoint Hygrometer launched at the Maïdo Observatory at Reunion one week after the eruption. Vömel H., S. Evan, and M. GPM Ground Validation Upper Air Radiosonde OLYMPEX V1

The GPM Ground Validation Upper Air Radiosonde OLYMPEX dataset was collected from October 28, 2015 through January 16, 2016 during the GPM Ground Validation Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX) held on the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Radiosondes were released from 5 locations: 3 in US - KSLE, KUIL, and NPOL site; and 2 in Canada - ECCC instrument site and CYZT. A total of 651 radiosondes were launched and collected during OLYMPEX from these sites. In addition, Level 4 dropsonde data were reprocessed to match the Level-4 data format and content of the radiosonde files and is also provided here. The dropsondes were released from the NASA DC-8 aircraft during specific flights in December 2015 and are published as the AVAPS dataset. This Upper Air Radiosonde dataset contains Level 0 through Level 4 data containing dew point temperature, pressure, air temperature, relative humidity, horizontal wind speed, vertical wind speed, wind direction, rise or drop rate, and geopotential height measurements. The data files are available in ASCII, ASCII-EOL, and netCDF-3 formats, as well as Skew-T and time series plots in PNG format. The lower level datasets (Level 0 raw data through Level 2 data) are only available upon request from the NASA GHRC DAAC.

The temperature profile data included in this data set was derived from the FIFE radiosonde data collected during the summer and fall of 1987 and the late summer of 1989 by Dr. Wilfred H. Brutsaert. These intensive radiosonde flights allowed the measurement of the atmospheric profiles of potential temperature and specific humidity. These data have been corrected for sensor delays, algorithm inconsistencies and have been interpolated to a set of standard pressure levels.

GPM Ground Validation Upper Air Radiosonde LPVEx V1

The GPM Ground Validation Radiosonde LPVEx dataset consists of sounding data collected as part of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission Ground Validation Light Precipitation Validation Experiment (LPVEx). This field campaign took place around the Gulf of Finland in September and October of 2010. The goal of the campaign was to provide additional high altitude, light rainfall measurements for the improvement of GPM satellite precipitation algorithms. The Vaisala RS92 radiosonde was used to produce vertical profiles of atmospheric temperature, pressure, humidity, and winds. The radiosondes were launched from two locations: Kumpula and Vantaa. The Upper Air Radiosonde LPVEx dataset consists of TSV data files and PNG browse image files.

Wind Profile Data: Radiosonde (FIFE)

The wind profile data described in this document were derived from the raw radiosonde data collected during FIFE by Dr. Wilfred H. Brutsaert during the summer and fall of 1987 and the late summer of 1989 The objective of this study was to calculate wind velocity and wind direction from successive horizontal positions of a radiosonde. These data have allowed the measurement of the atmospheric profiles of wind velocity and direction. The raw data have also been corrected for sensor delays and have been interpolated to a set of standard pressure levels. Successive horizontal positions of the radiosonde balloon in relation to its release point was used to calculate average wind speed and direction. The variables used to make these calculations were obtained from the FIFE Radiosonde Data. The balloon height was calculated by adding 10 m (i.e., the length of the string) to the height of the sonde. The horizontal distance of the sonde, together with the measured azimuth angle (also obtained from the FIFE Radiosonde Data), produced the horizontal position of the sonde. Finally, successive horizontal positions allowed the calculation of average wind velocity and direction over the interval. Note, as a result of the addition of 10 m for most flights, the height of the wind measurements in this data set is 10 meters higher than the companion values in the original FIFE Radiosonde Data.
