Seasonal Distribution of Ammonia-Oxidizing Archaea and Ammonia-Oxidation Rates in the South Atlantic Bight from April to November 2014

Previous work in nearshore waters of the Georgia USA coast has demonstrated mid-summer peaks in the abundance of Thaumarchaeota (blooms with 100 to 1,000-fold increases) accompanied by spikes in nitrite concentration. These studies were performed at one location, so the areal extent of the bloom is unknown, nor has it been demonstrated conclusively that it develops in inshore waters. We collected data on rates of ammonia oxidation and the distribution of Thaumarchaeota, ammonia-oxidizing Betaproteobacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing Nitrospina and environmental variables during 6 cruises aboard the UNOLS vessel R/V Savannah from April to November 2014 on transects of the South Atlantic Bight to evaluate the areal extent and timing of the bloom. This data set includes measurements of Chlorophyll-a concentration, PAR attenuation coefficient, oxygen concenrations, temperature, salinity and nitogenous nutrient concentrations (nitrite, nitrite + nitrate, ammonium, urea), and estimates of Archaea, bacteria and diatom gene concentration based on quantitative PCR.

Global dataset of nitrogen fixation rates across inland and coastal waters based on a coordinated synthesis effort

Biological nitrogen fixation converts inert di-nitrogen gas into bioavailable nitrogen and can be an important source of bioavailable nitrogen to organisms. This dataset synthesizes the aquatic nitrogen fixation rate measurements across inland and coastal waters. Data were derived from papers and datasets published by April 2022 and include rates measured using the acetylene reduction assay (ARA), 15N2 labeling, or the N2/Ar technique. The dataset is comprised of 4793 nitrogen fixation rates measurements from 267 studies, and is structured into four tables: 1) a reference table with sources from which data were extracted, 2) a rates table with nitrogen fixation rates that includes habitat, substrate, geographic coordinates, and method of measuring N2 fixation rates, 3) a table with supporting environmental and chemical data for a subset of the rate measurements when data were available, and 4) a data dictionary with definitions for each variable in each data table. This dataset was compiled and curated by the NSF-funded Aquatic Nitrogen Fixation Research Coordination Network (award number 2015825).

Time series of high-frequency profiles of depth, temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, specific conductance, chlorophyll a, turbidity, pH, oxidation-reduction potential, photosynthetically active radiation, colored dissolved organic matter, phycocyanin, phycoerythrin, and descent rate for Beaverdam Reservoir, Carvins Cove Reservoir, Falling Creek Reservoir, Gatewood Reservoir, and Spring Hollow Reservoir in southwestern Virginia, USA 2013-2025

Depth profiles of water biogeochemical properties were collected with SeaBird Electronics (SBE) Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth (CTD) profilers from 2013-2025 at five drinking water reservoirs in southwestern Virginia, USA. The study reservoirs are: Beaverdam Reservoir (Vinton, Virginia), Carvins Cove Reservoir (Roanoke, Virginia), Falling Creek Reservoir (Vinton, Virginia), Gatewood Reservoir (Pulaski, Virginia), and Spring Hollow Reservoir (Salem, Virginia). Beaverdam, Carvins Cove, Falling Creek, and Spring Hollow Reservoirs are owned and operated by the Western Virginia Water Authority as primary or secondary drinking water sources for Roanoke, Virginia, and Gatewood Reservoir is a drinking water source for the town of Pulaski, Virginia. The dataset consists of CTD depth profiles measured at the deepest site of each reservoir adjacent to the dam as well as other upstream reservoir sites. The profiles were collected approximately fortnightly in the spring months, weekly in the summer and early autumn, and monthly in the late autumn and winter. Beaverdam Reservoir, Carvins Cove Reservoir, and Falling Creek Reservoir were sampled every year in the dataset (2013-2025); Spring Hollow Reservoir was only sampled 2013-2017 and 2019; and Gatewood Reservoir was only sampled in 2016. Data availability differs across years due to additional sensors that have been added or replaced over time. From 2013-2016, profiles were taken with a CTD equipped with an SBE 43 Dissolved Oxygen sensor and an ECO FLNTU sensor for turbidity and chlorophyll. From 2017-2025, profiles were taken with a CTD equipped with an SBE 43 Dissolved Oxygen sensor, an ECO FLNTU sensor for turbidity and chlorophyll, a PAR-LOG ICSW sensor for photosynthetically active radiation, and a SBE 27 pH and ORP (oxidation-reduction potential) sensor. Summertime methane and carbon dioxide emission rates and associated variables from a national-scale survey of 146 reservoirs in the United States, 2016-2023

Reservoirs are globally important sources of greenhouse gases, but the magnitude of their emissions is highly uncertain. Here we present data for 146 reservoirs from two surveys of reservoir methane and carbon dioxide emissions, one at the regional scale in the midwestern United States and one at the national scale in the conterminous United States, plus data from one reservoir in Washington and another in Puerto Rico. At all reservoirs, ebullitive and diffusive emissions and basic physiochemistry were measured at 15-70 locations during one 22 to 64-hour period during the summers of 2016-2023, with four reservoirs revisited a second time. Concomitant water chemistry measurements were also made at an index site. The dataset is comprised of two geospatial files and seven .csv files containing greenhouse gas emissions, water chemistry, morphology, and other relevant data. These data comprise the largest multi-reservoir emissions dataset ever assembled using consistent measurement methods.

Relative predation rates on juvenile Chinook Salmon in the lower Stanislaus River, California, 2012-2024 by habitat suitability informed by juvenile Chinook Salmon and black bass observations in the lower Stanislaus and Merced rivers, California, 2012-2017

Overview The purpose of this work was to estimate relative predation on juvenile Chinook Salmon rearing in tributaries of the San Joaquin River, California in relation to meso- and microhabitat factors. Predation rates were estimated using predation bioassays. Ranges of depth and velocity targeted by the bioassays were informed by habitat suitability indices developed prior to field efforts. Juvenile Chinook and Bass Habitat Suitability Indices The purpose of this dataset is to develop habitat suitability indices for juvenile Chinook Salmon (<120mm) on the lower Stanislaus River and nonnative black bass ( Micropterus spp.). on the lower Merced River, both tributaries of the San Joaquin. This data was used to identify target ranges of depth and velocity during predation fieldwork. Occupancy data was collected via snorkel surveys on the lower Stanislaus River in 2018 and 2019 and on the Merced River in 2012 and 2014-2017. Predation Tethering Bioassay Study The purpose of this field study was to estimate relative rates of predation of juvenile Chinook Salmon. Predation rates were estimated using assays of tethered hatchery Chinook Salmon deployed across a range of mesohabitats on the lower Stanislaus River. Habitat suitability was expected to vary across mesohabitats and across depths and velocities sampled within habitats. Cameras were deployed with tethers to identify predators for a subset of predation events happening within the first 1-2 hours of deployment. Assays were deployed monthly March-May in 2022 and 2024. A supplemental set of assays were deployed in May 2023 under wet water year conditions that varied strongly from conditions sampled in 2022 and 2024.

Processed Net N2 Flux and Nitrous Oxide Production Rates from a mesocosm experiment, North River, MA, 2022

The data documented here show nitrogen cycling rates (net N2 flux and net N2O flux) from a tidal, freshwater wetland under two stressors in isolation and in combination over two different disturbance regimes. We used intact core mesocosms to examine how nitrogen cycling changed in response to increased temperature and salinity under pulse and press disturbances. We found that net N2 flux rates, defined as the balance between nitrogen fixation and denitrification did not directionally change in response to stressor pulse or press. Instead, it became more variable under both disturbance regimes. Nitrous oxide production rates, however, decreased and became more stable over time in the press scenario, but remained highly variable in the pulse scenario. These findings provide valuable knowledge on the functional potential of the nitrogen cycling microbial communities in tidal, freshwater wetlands when facing future climate variability.

Growth Rates of Xanthoparmelia Lichens in North Cemetery, Petersham MA 2005-2011

Lichens fix carbon dioxide from the air to build biomass. Crustose and foliose lichens grow as nearly flat, circular disks. While smaller lichens grow slowly, but with small, steady increases in radial growth rates, larger lichens grow more quickly, with radial velocities that remain roughly constant over the lifetime of an individual. These basic features follow directly from a novel mathematical model based on the diffusion of carbon dioxide around a lichen, and its absorption by the thallus. Smaller lichens fix carbon dioxide across the entire thallus, but larger lichens fix carbon dioxide disproportionately at edges. Because local edges remain the primary source of carbon as a lichen grows ever larger, radial growth rates remain constant. Predicted growth dynamics depend on four measurable parameters, and tests of the model against data suggest the model provides an accurate, robust, and universal framework for understanding the growth dynamics of lichens in nature.

Reconstructed high-rate SEIS data recorded during HP3 hammering from the NASA InSight mission to Mars

<p>The NASA InSight lander successfully placed a seismometer on the surface of Mars. Alongside, a hammering device was deployed that penetrated into the ground to attempt the first measurements of the planetary heat flow of Mars. The hammering of the heat probe generated repeated seismic signals that were registered by the seismometer. However, the broad frequency content of the seismic signals generated by the hammering extends beyond the Nyquist frequency governed by the seismometer&#39;s sampling rate of 100 samples per second. Here, we&nbsp;provide data that was reconstructed at a higher sampling rate of 2000 samples per second using a dedicated de-aliasing algorithm described in the accompanying article. This archive will be updated regularly with new data acquired on Mars.&nbsp;</p> <p>For a detailed data description and instructions on how to cite this dataset, please refer to the README file.&nbsp;</p>

Daily Severity Rating - ERA-Interim

<p>The Daily Severity Rating (DSR) is a numeric rating of the difficulty of controlling fires. It is based on the Fire Weather Index but more accurately reflects the expected efforts required for fire suppression.</p> <p>This is part of a larger dataset providing gridded field calculations from the Canadian Fire Weather Index System using weather forcings from the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) ERA-Interim reanalysis dataset (Vitolo et al., 2019; Di Giuseppe et al., 2016). The dataset has been developed through a collaboration between the Joint Research Centre and ECMWF under the umbrella of the Global Wildfires Information System (GWIS), a joint initiative of the GEO and the Copernicus Work Programs. The whole dataset consists of seven indices, each of which describes a different aspect of the effect that fuel moisture and wind have on fire ignition probability and its behavior, if started. The indices are called: Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC), Duff Moisture Code (DMC), Drought Code (DC), Initial Spread Index (ISI), Build Up Index (BUI), Fire Weather Index (FWI) and Daily Severity Rating (DSR). Salt River Wetlands denitrification rate, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium rate, dissolved organic carbon concentration in June 2016 as well as soil porosity and bulk density

Raw and derived data used to calculate denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate to ammonium (DNRA) from push-pull experiments with added isotopically labelled nitrate. Experiments were conducted in 2016 in the Salt River Accidental Wetlands in three different patch types: Unvegetated, dominated by Ludwigia peploides, and dominated by Typha species (T. domingensis and T. latifolia). Data include start and end of incubation concentration of nitrate, ammonium, atom percent 15N in ammonium, dissolved organic carbon, excess mass 29-N2, and excess mass 30-N2. Soil data was collected from the same patch types including soil moisture, porosity, and bulk density.

Within-plant coexistence of viruses across nitrogen and phosphorus supply rates

Most species can be coinfected by multiple pathogens that may interact through shared resources (i.e., resource competition) or the host immune system (i.e., apparent competition). Community theory developed for free-living organisms suggests that coinfecting pathogens can persist if they satisfy the mutual invasion criterion of coexistence, establishing infections in hosts that are already infected. Furthermore, the likelihood of coexistence may depend on host nutrition which can affect shared resources and host immunity. Here we apply the novel approach of combining a dynamical model and experimental mutual invasibility trials to explore the effects of host nutrient supply on the coexistence of two viral plant pathogens. We focus on among-pathogen interactions mediated by shared resources. First, we used a model to generate hypotheses about how nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) supply rates affect the ability of two plant viruses to invade established infections of the other virus. Then, we experimentally manipulated the N and P supplied to oats (Avena sativa) in a growth chamber experiment and tested mutual invasion of two RNA viral pathogens, BYDV-PAV and CYDV-RPV. Nutrient supplies ranged from rates that barely kept hosts alive up to high, but sub-toxic, rates. Model simulations suggested that the viruses were more likely to invade established infections either when they could replicate at lower N and P concentrations or when plant N and P concentrations increased due to a combination of nutrient supply rates and resident virus nutrient use. In the experiment, each virus successfully invaded hosts infected by the other and had consistent growth rates across N and P supply rates. Our results suggest that BYDV-PAV and CYDV-RPV can coexist across a wide range environmental nutrient supply, which is consistent with the high levels of co-occurrence of these two viruses in field populations.

Gas exchange velocities (k600), gas exchange rates (K600), and hydraulic geometries for streams and rivers derived from the NEON Reaeration field and lab collection data product (DP1.20190.001)

This dataset contains estimates of gas exchange velocity, gas exchange rate, and hydraulic parameters for streams calculated from tracer-gas experiments and conservative tracer injections collected by the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). All input data were collected by NEON and is available on the NEON data portal at https://data.neonscience.org. Specifically, the NEON Reaeration field and lab collection data product (DP1.20190.001) was used to calculate these estimates. Gas exchange was estimated in two ways: first, following an unpooled frequentist approach and second, following a partially pooled Bayesian approach. In addition, a salt-correction was applied to gas exchange estimates for sites where it was possible and necessary. All estimates of gas exchange are included in the file gasExchange_ds.csv. A recommended selection of these estimates is included in the dataset (best_k600_mPerDay and best_K600_mPerDay). The stanfit objects used for the partially pooled Bayesian approach are also included as site-specific model objects for gas exchange velocities and rates. In addition, water velocity was calculated from conservative tracer injections, and mean water depth was calculated from these water velocity estimates and measurements of wetted width and water discharge. All hydraulic parameters are included in the file hydraulics_ds.csv. All processing code is available in the reaRates R package. Rates and controls of nitrogen fixation in post-fire lodgepole pine forests, Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, 2022

This dataset contains all the contents needed to reproduce the calculations and analyses done in the original paper associated with this dataset (Heumann et al. 2025 Ecology). The primary method used in this study was the Acetylene Reduction Assay (ARA) which measures the rate at which acetylene is reduced to ethylene in nitrogen-fixing organisms as a proxy for nitrogen fixation activity. We measured acetylene reduction rates in multiple cryptic niches (i.e., lichen, moss, pine litter, dead wood and mineral soil) in 34-year-old lodgepole pine stands in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to explore the rates, temporal patterns, and climate controls on cryptic N fixation. Thus the foundation of this dataset is ethylene production rate measurements. All the data tables in this dataset contain either measured ethylene production rates or estimates of N fixation scaled from those ethylene production rates. Included with this are various physical measurements (e.g. dry mass, moisture content, incubation temperatures) that we included in our analyses in order to either scale up rates of N fixation using biomass estimates from field sites or explore temperature and moisture relationships with nitrogen fixation activity under controlled conditions. Included with this dataset are three R studio scripts used to run the calculations and analyses reported in the manuscript publication from this study.

This data set was used to observe how the application of dredged sediment would impact soil respirations rates, biogeochemical pools, mineral associated organic matter of coastal wetland soils from Apalachicola, Florida. To achieve this, a combination of intact core and bottle incubations were used, comparing a high organic matter coastal wetland soil to a high mineral content wetland soil which were collected in June, 2022. All laboratory analysis was conducted at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida.

Light-saturated photosynthetic rate, dark respiration, stomatal conductance and ratio of internal to external carbon dioxide concentration from the 1980-82 Eriophorum vaginatum reciprocal transplant plots from Eagle Creek to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, 2010

In 1980-1982, six transplant gardens were established along a latitudinal gradient in interior Alaska from Eagle Creek, AK, in the south to Prudhoe Bay, AK, in the north (Shaver et al. 1986) .Three sites, Toolik Lake (TL), Sagwon (SAG), and Prudhoe Bay (PB) are north of the continental divide and the remaining three, Eagle Creek (EC), No Name Creek (NN), and Coldfoot (CF), are south of the continental divide. Each garden consisted of 10 individual tussocks transplanted back to their home-site, as well as 10 individuals from each of the other transplant sites. Data were collected in July 2010 for tussocks transplanted in 1980-82 in a reciprocal transplant experiment and then harvested in 2011. Important variables are garden name, source population, light-saturated photosynthetic rate, dark respiration, stomatal conductance and ratio of internal to external carbon dioxide concentration.
