Stable oxygen isotope ratios of water (H2O-d18O) from river, lagoon, and open ocean sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2019-ongoing

Multiple water types (river, lagoon, ocean) from the North Slope of Alaska and nearshore Beaufort Sea are sampled seasonally by the Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program to investigate biogeochemical linkages between terrestrial, lagoon, and open ocean ecosystems. Water samples are collected during full ice cover (April), ice break-up (mid-June to early July), and open water (late July and August) periods, and analyzed for delta 18O (ratio of oxygen-18 to oxygen-16) to use in mixing models for source water contribution.

Soil and foliar carbon and nitrogen content and stable isotope ratios from rainfall manipulation experiments at the Jornada Basin LTER, 2011-2020

As rainfall extremes are expected to increase in novel magnitude and frequency, especially in dryland regions, we asked how prolonged and directional shifts to water availability may affect ecosystem carbon and nitrogen dynamics. This data set includes foliar and soil carbon and nitrogen stable isotope and concentration data collected from multiple long-term rainfall manipulation experiments at the Jornada Basin LTER. Datasets also include rainfall data adjusted to rainfall manipulation intensities. Collection dates range from 5 to 14 years since the onset of experimental treatments. The primary plant species targeted for this study were the dominant grass, Bouteloua eriopoda, and the dominant shrub, Prosopis glandulosa.

We completed an &ldquo;exhaustive coverage [search], citing all relevant literature" (Booth et al., 2016), using the search terms &ldquo;Lead (Pb) isotopes and concentration in surface snow, snow pits, and ice cores&rdquo;. We performed an initial comprehensive literature search on these search terms on Web of Science Collection databases in September 2020 and May 2023. Records evaluated for relevance using the title and abstract. Removal of clearly off-topic papers (e.g., the chemistry of penguin feces) gathered in the search due to the dual meaning of &ldquo;lead&rdquo; reduced the paper count to 326 titles. The full text of the remaining publications was evaluated with clear explicit criteria for inclusion and exclusion, based on the following criteria.</p> <ol> <li> <ol> <li>Only studies examining long-traveled background atmospheric lead signals were considered. All point source pollution studies examining the localized effects of traffic, road salt, mines, industry, power plants, human activity at base camp stations, etc, were excluded. An exception was made for samples which were taken at sufficient depths in the analyzed record to predate the pollution source or where wind trajectory did not transport pollution to the collection site regardless of close geographic proximity.</li> <li> <p>Only studies of natural, undisturbed snowpacks and ice cores were examined. Studies which sampled snow from urban structures were excluded. Point source studies of emissions detail the localized effects of traffic, road salt, mines, industry, power plants, and human activity at base camp stations. While meaningful for understanding the direct emissions from various sources and developing new technology aimed at reducing source emissions, point source emission studies do not contribute to the understanding of regional and global signals. Additionally, studies examining the volcanic signal in snow following major modern eruptions were excluded, as this was classified as disturbed snow.</p> </li> <li>Studies must specify the sampling localities by providing a minimum of latitude and longitude. Where sampling locations are only referenced by colloquial names, the distance from point source pollution cannot be verified. Therefore, such studies were excluded.</li> <li> <p>Records of&nbsp;<sup>210</sup>Pb in snow and ice were excluded.&nbsp;<sup>210</sup>Pb is useful for establishing chronology in young snow and ice due to its small half life (~ 22.3 years). But it is not useful for consideration of old records and the source constraint of <sup>210</sup>Pb into the atmosphere is poorly constrained over time (Nijampurkar &amp; Clausen, 1990). Therefore, it cannot be considered in conjunction with Pb isotopes and concentrations. Records of <sup>210</sup>Pb in snow and ice were excluded.</p> </li> <li> <p>Pb isotopes and concentrations taken from cryoconites (soil-like composites of dust, industrial soot, and microbial mats of photosynthetic bacteria) were excluded from this literature review. Cryoconites are important to glacial systems as they alter the albedo of the glacier surface, and therefore affect the glacier melt rate (Fountain et al., 2004). However, they must be considered separately from surface snow, snow pits, and ice cores due to the drastic differences in formation and biologic nature.</p> </li> <li> <p>The publication must be available to the author (<em>e.g.,</em> through the University Library, from collaborators)</p> </li> </ol> </li> </ol> <p>To ensure that the literature search conducted on the Web of Science was robust and complete, citations were checked to ensure inclusion in the literature search results and included when missing. Publications were indexed into Table A.1 and Table A.2. Following the completion of publication indexing, Table A.1 and Table A.2 were evaluated against the 23 regions (Table A.3) -- 20 from RGI 7.0 (RGI 7.0 Consortium, 2023) and 3 author defined regions -- to identify areas/papers that may have been missed in the initial search. Areas with few or no results were searched again using Google Scholar and Web of Science.</p> <p>Based on these searches, we sought to understand the current spatial and temporal coverage of these records, shed light on gaps in the previous research and make recommendations on mitigating these gaps going forward. We used tables and graphics, included in the main text and the supplement, to summarize the characteristics of the compiled records. In the main text, we discuss the limitations and gaps within the current long-range transported Pb literature, and recommend paths to mitigate these gaps. Sulfate Concentrations and Sulfur Stable Isotope Ratios in Surface Water from the Marlborough and Waipara Winegrowing Regions, South Island of New Zealand, 2023

Agricultural sulfur (S) additions are a major anthropogenic source of S to the environment, yet our understanding of the downstream transformations and potential environmental consequences of these S inputs remains incomplete. This dataset includes surface water samples from the Marlborough and Waipara winegrowing regions of the South Island of New Zealand, where frequent applications of S fungicide are widespread. Samples were analyzed for sulfate concentration and S stable isotope ratios – the combination of which forms the S “fingerprint”. We collected surface water samples during the winter of 2023 from a variety of different locations and land use types, including vineyards, forests, pastures, and urban areas. The data table includes water sample sulfate concentrations, sulfate-S stable isotope measurements, and the S stable isotope composition of commonly used S-containing fungicides and fertilizers for comparison.

Mass per tiller, nitrogen concentration, stable isotope ratios for carbon and nitrogen from the 1980-82 Eriophorum vaginatum reciprocal transplant experiment along a latitudinal gradient in interior Alaska collected in July, 2011

In 1980-1982, six transplant gardens were established along a latitudinal gradient in interior Alaska from Eagle Creek, AK in the south to Prudhoe Bay, AK in the north. Three sites, Toolik Lake (TL), Sagwon (SAG), and Prudhoe Bay (PB) are north of the continental divide and the remaining three, Eagle Creek (EC), No Name Creek (NN), and Coldfoot (CF), are south of the continental divide. Each garden consisted of 10 individual Eriophorum vaginatum tussocks transplanted back to their home-site, as well as 10 individuals from each of the other transplant sites. The gardens were harvested in 2011. Important variables are garden name, source population, mass per tiller, nitrogen concentration, and stable isotope ratios for Carbon and Nitrogen.

Light-saturated photosynthetic rate, dark respiration, stomatal conductance and ratio of internal to external carbon dioxide concentration from the 1980-82 Eriophorum vaginatum reciprocal transplant plots from Eagle Creek to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, 2010

Oxygen-argon dissolved gas ratios using Equilibrator Inlet Mass Spectrometry (EIMS) and triple oxygen isotopes (TOI) from NES-LTER Transect cruises, ongoing since 2018

In order to calculate net community production (NCP) rates on Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) transect cruises, gas tracer data were collected with a continuous at-sea mass spectrometer. The ratio of O2/Ar, measured continuously from underway water, yields 8,000-15,000 rates of NCP per cruise. Discrete water samples (50 to 150 per cruise) were collected for triple oxygen isotope (TOI) analysis to estimate gross primary production (GPP) rates and ratios of NCP/GPP. Along-shelf (upstream-downstream) transects were conducted in addition to the main across-shelf transect. This data package provides two types of data tables for NES-LTER transect cruises beginning in 2018: a high-frequency continuous Equilibration Inlet Mass Spectrometer (EIMS) table, provided by year, and a low-frequency discrete triple oxygen isotope (TOI) table with all years combined. Rates calculated from these measurements are provided as separate packages, per year, in the EDI repository.

BGC-Argo Satellite matchup to compute variability in the Chl:C ratio of phytoplankton.

<p>This dataset provides matchups between BGC-Argo and MODIS satellites (both atmospheric and ocean color products). Isoprene mixing ratio in ambient air across the Southern Ocean in the austral summer of 2016/2017, during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE).

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset contains the mixing ratios of isoprene (C5H8) in ambient air measured during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition around the Southern Ocean in the austral summer of 2016/2017 using the iDirac, an autonomous gas chromatograph (Bolas et al., 2020). Samples were collected at a temporal resolution of approximately 10 minutes, with sizeable gaps in the dataset during Legs 1 and 3 due to instrument malfunction.</p> <p>Isoprene represents one of the largest biogenic emissions on the planet. While the magnitude and mechanism of its emissions on land are well established, there is still large uncertainty on the drivers of marine isoprene emissions. SIA-BRA: The carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of animals of Brazilian biomes and coastal marine areas

<p>SIA-BRA is a compilation of C and N stable isotope ratios of terrestrial and aquatic animals sampled in Brazilian biomes and coastal-marine areas.</p> <p>Version 1.0 contains isotopic data of c. 21,804 non-captive wildlife specimens, excluding livestock production or laboratory<br> experiments. They were 13,881 vertebrates and 7,923 invertebrates. There are 11 phyla, with a clear dominance of Chordata (64%) and Arthropoda (29%), 36 classes, 154 orders, 473 families, 894 genera and 1,157 species.</p> <p>They were divided into the following habitats: terrestrial (30% of the total), freshwater (27%), oceanic (40%)<br> and estuarine (4%) (see <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/geb.13449">https://doi.org/10.1111/geb.13449</a>)</p> <p>Software format: Data are supplied as delimited text files (.csv).</p>

GWAS summary statistics for waist-to-hip ratio and body principal components

<p>This&nbsp;dataset contains genome-wide association summary statistics for waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), as well as those for body principal components (PCs). A subset of&nbsp;&nbsp;387,139&nbsp;unrelated, white British individuals were analyzed for WHR. PCs were combined from the summary statistics for WHR and 13 other anthropometric traits (body mass index, standing height, weight, hip circumference, waist circumference, arm lean mass (left), arm fat mass (left), leg lean mass (left), leg fat mass (left), trunk lean mass, trunk fat mass, body fat percentage, basal metabolic rate) provided by the Neale lab (http://www.nealelab.is/uk-biobank). All traits were inverse-rank normal transformed (by the Neale lab or ourselves for WHR).</p> <p>All effect sizes, including those for PCs,&nbsp;are standardized, i.e. they represent the effects on a trait with variance 1.</p> <p>The zip files contain the data to run the sample pipeline and the shiny app, both available from&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/JonSulc/PCA_Cross-sex_MR">https://github.com/JonSulc/PCA_Cross-sex_MR</a>.</p>

Stable isotope ratios of C, N and S in Southern Ocean sea stars (1985-2017)

<p>Sea stars (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) are a key component of Southern Ocean benthos, with 16% of the known sea star species living there. In temperate marine environments, sea stars commonly play an important role in food webs, acting as keystone species. However, trophic ecology and functional role of Southern Ocean sea stars are still poorly known, notably due to the scarcity of large-scale studies. Here, we report 24332 trophic marker (stable isotopes and elemental contents of C, N and S of tegument and/or tube feet) and biometric (arm length, disk radius, arm to disk ratio) measurements in 2456 specimens of sea stars. Samples were collected between 12/01/1985 and 08/10/2017 in numerous locations along the Antarctic littoral and Subantarctic islands. The spatial scope of the dataset covers a significant portion of the Southern Ocean (Latitude: 47.717&deg; South to 86.273&deg; South ; longitude: 127.767&deg; West to 162.201&deg; East ; depth: 6 to 5338 m). The dataset contains 133 distinct taxa, including 72 currently accepted species spanning 51 genera, 20 families and multiple feeding guilds / functional groups (suspension feeders, sediment feeders, omnivores, predators of mobile or sessile prey). For 505 specimens, mitochondrial CO1 genes were sequenced to confirm and/or refine taxonomic identifications, and those sequences are already publicly available through the Barcode of Life Data System. This number will grow in the future, as molecular analyses are still in progress. Overall, thanks to its large taxonomic, spatial, and temporal extent, as well as its integrative nature (combining genetic, morphological and ecological data), this dataset can be of wide interest to Southern Ocean ecologists, invertebrate zoologists, benthic ecologists, and environmental managers dealing with associated areas.</p>

Nitrogen and carbon concentrations and stable isotope ratios (δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C) in European moss samples, 2005-2006

This dataset contains nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) concentrations and stable isotope ratios (δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C) measured in moss samples collected across Europe within the framework of the ICP Vegetation programme (International Cooperative Programme on Effects of Air Pollution on Natural Vegetation and Crops, UNECE LRTAP Convention). Moss surveys are conducted every five years and the data presented here correspond specifically to the first sampling campaign, carried out in 2005/2006. During the 2005/2006 European moss survey, approximately 3,000 moss samples were collected at non-urban and semi-natural sites across 16 European countries following a standardized biomonitoring protocol. The dataset used in this study comprises a subset of 1,022 moss samples (approximately 35 % of the total survey), provided by 12 European countries, which were selected for the determination of nitrogen and carbon concentrations and their corresponding stable isotope signatures (δ¹⁵N and δ¹³C). Moss samples collected by each participating country were sent to the Integrated Environmental Quality Laboratory (LICA), Institute for Biodiversity and Environment (BIOMA - University of Navarra), where all chemical and isotopic analyses were subsequently performed under uniform analytical conditions. In addition, this dataset incorporates moss data from Sweden, Croatia and Macedonia for the same sampling year, which were not included in the official ICP Vegetation 2005/2006 dataset. The European moss biomonitoring network was established to provide a complementary, high spatial resolution and time-integrated measure of atmospheric deposition of nitrogen and other pollutants within terrestrial ecosystems. The approach is based on the ability of ectohydric mosses to accumulate nutrients and trace elements directly from wet and dry atmospheric deposition, enabling dense spatial sampling across large geographical areas. Oxygen-18 isotope ratios, chemistry, and tracers in storm water from WS10 hillslope experiment in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, 2001-2003

Oxygen-18 ratios, expressed as Delta-18O or D18O (parts per hundred), measured in WS10 discharge and WS10 precipitation. The time series spans from January 2001 to February 2003, period during which precipitation and streamflow were sampled mostly manually and weekly. The time series also includes some periods of higher frequency automatic sampling in streamflow and precipitation in winter 2001 and winter 2002. The precipitation Delta-18O time series corresponds to the Delta-18O measured at PRIMET station located about 1 km from WS10 outlet at a similar altitude, except from 01-Sep-2002 to 04-Feb-2003, when the Delta-18O of precipitation sampled sequentially on an experimental hillslope of WS10, was used (the collector was located on the south aspect, 91 m upstream from the outlet).
