Why is my community reacting like this? Understanding reactions in open-source communities

<p>In 2016, GitHub introduced the Reactions feature to facilitate the expression of sentiments and reduce noise in communications on its platform. Recent studies indicated that developers has been adopting the feature and was observed a reduction of noise on conversations inside the platform. However, the patterns of usage and profiles of users expressing these reactions in inside their communities remain underexplored. Identifying these patterns may help maintainers to better understand members' behaviors in their communities, and researchers to build supporting tools focused on users' reactions. This paper presents an initial study to (i) understand these interactions on open-source software communities, (ii) identify types of resources that receive the most reactions, (iii) analyzing seasonal factors influencing usage, and (iv) correlating the provided reactions with the roles of developers within the community. Preliminary results indicate that users primarily react to comments in Issues, with notable periods of heightened activity. Additionally, significant differences were observed between the reactions of maintainers and other members of the community.</p>

Data from: Factors influencing plasticity in the arrival-breeding interval in a migratory species reacting to climate change

Climate change is profoundly affecting the phenology of many species. In migratory birds, there is evidence for advances in their arrival time at the breeding ground and their timing of breeding, yet empirical studies examining the interdependence between arrival and breeding time are lacking. Hence, evidence is scarce regarding how breeding time may be adjusted via the arrival-breeding interval to help local populations adapt to local conditions or climate change. We used long-term data from an intensively monitored population of the northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe) to examine the factors related to the length of 734 separate arrival-to-breeding events from 549 individual females. From 1993 to 2017 the mean arrival and egg-laying dates advanced by approximately the same amount (~5-6 days), with considerable between-individual variation in the arrival-breeding interval. The arrival-breeding interval was shorter for: (1) individuals that arrived later in the season compared to early arriving birds, (2) for experienced females compared to first-year breeders, (3) as spring progressed, and (4) in later years compared to earlier ones. The influence of these factors was much larger for birds arriving earlier in the season compared to later arriving birds, with most effects on variation in the arrival-breeding interval being absent in late arriving birds. Thus, in this population it appears that the timing of breeding is not constrained by arrival for early- to mid-arriving birds, but instead is dependent on local conditions after arrival. For late arriving birds, however, the timing of breeding appears to be influenced by arrival constraints. Hence, impacts of climate change on arrival dates and local conditions are expected to vary for different parts of the population, with potential negative impacts associated with these factors likely to differ for early- versus late-arriving birds.

Data from: Directed flight and optimal airspeeds: homeward-bound gulls react flexibly to wind yet fly slower than predicted

Birds in flight are proposed to adjust their body orientation (heading) and airspeed to wind conditions adaptively according to time and energy constraints. Airspeeds in goal-directed flight are predicted to approach or exceed maximum-range airspeeds, which minimize transport costs (energy expenditure per unit distance) and should increase in headwinds and crosswinds. Diagnosis of airspeed adjustment is however obscured by uncertainty regarding birds' goal-directions, transport costs, interrelations with orientation strategy and the attainability of predicted behaviour. To address these issues, we tested whether gulls minimized transport costs through adjustment of airspeed and heading to wind conditions during extended inbound flight over water (180–360 km) to their breeding colony, and introduce a methodology to assess transport (energy) efficiency given wind conditions. Airspeeds, heading, flight mode and energy expenditure were estimated using GPS tracking, accelerometer and wind data. Predicted flight was determined by simulating each trip according to maximum-range airspeeds and various orientation strategies. Gulls employed primarily flapping flight (93%), and negotiated crosswinds flexibly to exploit both high altitude tailwinds and coastal soaring opportunities. We demonstrate that predicted airspeeds in heavy crosswinds depend strongly on orientation strategy and presumed preferred direction. Measured airspeeds increased with headwind and crosswind similarly to maximum-range airspeeds based on full compensation for wind drift, yet remained ∼ 30% lower than predicted by all strategies, resulting in slower and 30–35% costlier flight. Interestingly, more energy could be saved through adjustment of airspeed (median 40%) than via orientation strategy (median 4%). Therefore, despite remarkably flexible reaction to wind at sea, these gulls evidently minimized neither time nor energy expenditure. However, airspeeds were possibly over-predicted by current aerodynamic models. This study emphasizes the importance of accounting for orientation strategy when assessing airspeed adjustments to wind and indicates that either the cost or adaptive 'currency' of extended flight among gulls may require revision.

Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) react to underwater sounds

<p>Marine mammals and diving birds face several physiological challenges under water, affecting their thermoregulation and locomotion as well as their sensory systems. Therefore, marine mammals have modified ears for improved underwater hearing. <a name="_Hlk5740480">Underwater hearing in marine birds have been studied in a few species, but for the record-holding divers, such as penguins, there are no detailed data</a>. We played underwater noise bursts to gentoo penguins<i> (Pygoscelis papua)</i> in a large tank at sound pressure levels between 100 and 120 dB re 1 µPa rms. The penguins showed a graded reaction to the noise bursts, ranging from no reactions at 100 dB to strong reactions in more than 62% of the playbacks at 120 dB re 1 µPa. The responses were always directed away from the sound source. The fact that penguins can detect and react to underwater stimuli may indicate that they make use of sound stimuli for orientation and prey detection during dives. Further, it suggests that penguins may be sensitive to anthropogenic noise, like many species of marine mammals.</p>

Refactoring React-based Web Apps

<p>This dataset was utilized in the research paper titled "Refactorings in React-based Web Apps," accepted for publication in The Journal of Systems and Software. Herein, we present a concise abstract of the study.</p> <p>Refactoring is a well-known technique to improve software quality. However, there are relevant domains where refactoring has not been studied in-depth before, such as JavaScript front-end frameworks. To fill this gap, we empirically study refactorings that developers perform when maintaining and evolving React-based Web applications. By manually inspecting 320 refactoring commits performed in open source projects, we catalog 69 distinct refactoring operations of which 25 are specific to React code, 17 are adaptations of traditional refactorings for the React context, 22 are traditional refactorings, and six are specific to JavaScript and CSS code. The catalog of refactorings proposed in this article might support practitioners when improving the maintainability of React applications.</p>

AI and Political Marketing: How Indonesian React to The Presidential Candidate AI-Generated Advertisement

<p><span>The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into political campaigns, particularly through social media, has revolutionized voter behavior influencing mechanisms. This research explores the impact of AI-generated content on public decision-making in the context of the 2024 Indonesian presidential elections, focusing on the Prabowo-Gibran pair. Drawing upon selective exposure theory, the study investigates how perceived source slant, perceived source bias, and perceived effects of opponents' news diet influence political participation likelihood. Through a quantitative survey of 150 Indonesian citizens active on social media, the study reveals significant positive correlations between perceived source slant, bias, and political participation likelihood. The findings underscore the pivotal role of AI-generated content in shaping political engagement and suggest implications for enhancing voter mobilization strategies in the digital age. </span></p>

Narwhals react to ship noise and airgun pulses embedded in background noise

<p>Anthropogenic activities are increasing in the Arctic posing a threat to species with high seasonal site-fidelity, such as the narwhal Monodon monoceros. In this controlled sound exposure study, six narwhals were live-captured and instrumented with animal-borne tags providing movement and behavioural data, and exposed to concurrent ship noise and airgun pulses. All narwhals reacted to sound exposure by reduced buzzing rates, where the response was dependent on the magnitude of exposure defined as 1/distance to ship. Halving of buzzing rate, compared with undisturbed behaviour, and cessation of foraging occurred at 12 and ~7-8 km from the ship, respectively. The effect of exposure could be detected &gt; 40 km from the ship. At distances &gt; 5 km, the received high-frequency cetacean weighted sound exposure levels were below background noise indicating sensitivity of narwhals towards sound disturbance and demonstrating their ability to detect signals embedded in noise. Further studies are needed to evaluate the energetic costs of disrupted foraging due to sustained disturbance but the observed sensitivity should be considered in the management of anthropogenic activities in the Arctic. The results of this study emphasize the importance of controlled sound exposure studies in the wild to explore the auditory capabilities of odontocetes.</p>
