Social-Ecological Dynamics of Recreational Fishery Landscapes: Recreational angler catch and satisfaction in the Midwest, 2018 to 2024

The goal of this dataset is to understand angler information gathering and sharing, technology use, expectation-setting, site choice, and the factors influencing angler satisfaction in rural and urban environments. These data were collected through on-site creel surveys and instantaneous counts of fishing effort and associated angler vehicles. Traditional creel surveys are completed only at the end of an angler's fishing trip. These dual-intercept creel survey data are novel because anglers were intercepted both before and after their fishing trip. This survey design allowed us to collect unbiased estimates of anglers' expected catch. These data can be used to understand the role of angler expectations in angler satisfaction and behavior. Data collection were conducted in two counties in Wisconsin, USA. Vilas County is a primarily rural, forested, and glaciated region with many relatively small lakes. Dane County has a larger urban center (Madison, WI) that is surrounded by agricultural areas. Most of the Dane County lakes surveyed were part of the Yahara chain of lakes: Lakes Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa, and Kegonsa. Dane county has fewer, larger lakes with greater connectivity to each other. Vilas County was sampled in the summer of 2018, the summer of 2019, and the summer and winter of 2022. Dane County was sampled in the winter and summer of 2022.

Wisconsin creel dataset as well as predictor variables for lakes from 1990 to 2017 to estimate statewide recreational fisheries harvest

Recreational fisheries have high economic worth, valued at $190B globally. An important, but underappreciated, secondary value of recreational catch is its role as a source of food. This contribution is poorly understood due to difficulty in estimating recreational harvest at spatial scales beyond an individual system, as traditionally estimated from angler creel surveys. Here, we address this gap using a 28-year creel survey of ~300 Wisconsin inland lakes. We develop a statistical model of recreational harvest for individual lakes and then scale-up to unsurveyed lakes (3769 lakes; 73% of statewide lake surface area) to generate a statewide estimate of recreational lake harvest of ~4200 t and an estimated annual angler consumption rate of ~3 kg, nearly double estimated United States per capita freshwater fish consumption. Recreational fishing harvest makes significant contributions to human diets, is critical for discussions on food security, and the multiple ecosystem services of freshwater systems.

Como and Phalen lake ChatBot water quality and recreation text survey, 2022 and 2023

We collected data from visitors to two urban lakes in Saint Paul, Minnesota, using a conversational chatbot to assess visitor perception of current lake water quality, trends in water quality over time, and other questions relevant to park managers. Data were collected at Como Lake in 2022 and 2023, and at Lake Phalen in 2023. Signs were installed at three locations around each lake with high pedestrian traffic. Each sign had a hook question (“How many watercraft are on the lake right now? Text the number to XXX-XXX-XXXX”). Visitors who responded to this question initiated a series of optional follow-up questions, using a conversational chatbot run by software that automates the sending and receiving of text messages. Survey questions included asking respondents about their primary purpose for visiting the lake today, how often they have visited the lake in the past 12 months, and whether they perceive that water quality in the lake is improving, getting worse, or remaining about the same. Respondents were asked to provide their ZIP code, used to estimate distance traveled to the lake. Respondents also had the opportunity to opt-in to future data collection via phone or text. An AI language model was then used to process the information and parse and synthesize responses. Unique anonymous identifiers were used to key survey response data.

Phytoplankton chlorophyll in Iowa state recreational lakes 2018-2020

Chlorophyll a dataset is curated by Phyto-PAM, a multi-wavelength fluorometer that rapidly infers the abundance and composition of phytoplankton communities based on the fluorescence excitation of chlorophyll a and accessory pigments. This dataset categorizes phytoplankton into four taxa: 1) cyanobacteria; 2) ‘Green algae’ (euglenophytes and chlorophytes; 3) ‘Brown algae’ (ochrophytes, dinophytes, haptophytes); and 4) ‘Red organisms’ (phycoerythrin-rich phytoplankton). Sub-surface water samples (n > 450) collected in eutrophic lakes for three summer seasons (2018-2020; 15 weeks per season; from May through September). DNA sequencing data for bacteria and eukaryotes are available at NCBI (16s rRNA: PRJNA764241, PRJNA763651, and 18s rRNA: PRJNA787030).

Data for recreation (with adjustments) of Wheatley's 1996 long barrow viewshed analysis

<p>Following Wheatley's (1996) viewshed analysis of real and simulated long barrows in two regions of Wiltshire, this study aimed to replicate the analysis (investigating regional variation in barrow viewsheds) with the additional factor of elevation included to limit the random generation of long barrows to elevations where they have been observed, to avoid potential skewing of viewshed areas.</p> <p>This dataset contains 20x20km squares surrouding Avebury and Stonehenge which match Wheatley's demarcated 'subregions;' as well as polygons matching the elevation ranges within which long barrows were found in each subregion; random points generated in these subregions; the calculated viewshed areas for real and simulated barrow points, and a complete dataset for long barrows recorded on the Wiltshire HER, both certain and potential. To carry out a viewshed analysis with this data, a DTM is also required.</p>

Recreational Reading as a Leisure Activity: Perspectives from Georgian and Finnish Hearing and deaf students

<p><em>Using a mixed methods approach, this study investigates Finnish and Georgian deaf students' attitudes towards leisure reading and the relationship between their reading intentions and actual reading. </em><em>The primary interest of the study is to identify the external factors that affect reading behaviour directly or indirectly.&nbsp;</em></p> <p><em>An Integrative Model of Planned Behaviour is used as a theoretical framework, where intention is considered the main determinant for the behaviour.&nbsp;</em></p> <p><em>The study is cross-cultural, bringing the experiences of two distinct countries together.&nbsp;<br><br></em></p> <p><em>Reading attitude is investigated quantitatively, using a 5-point Likert Scale survey. 29 statements are broken down into three variables: enjoyment ( statements 4-13), difficulty ( statements 14-22) and social reinforcement (statements 23-29).&nbsp;</em></p> <p>Follow-up focus group interviews investigated the perceived external factors that affect reading behaviour negatively. interview questions were also grouped under three categories: 1)&nbsp;General feelings about reading (experiential attitude or affect), 2) Influences from individuals, close networks or society (perceived norms) &nbsp;and situational or environmental restrictions affect behaviour performance (skills, knowledge, resources, other factors).&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>The interview protocol, questions survey and row data are attached as files.</p> <p>Interview transcripts are saved in Finnish and Georgian languages and can be shared only upon a reasonable request.&nbsp;</p>

Adirondack Public Good Events Database: Natural Resource, Environmental, Economic and Recreation Policy and Common Pool Resources for a Social-Ecological System in Adirondack Park, New York, USA, 1760-2020.

I assembled this dataset from various published sources to evaluate how the social-ecological system (SES) in Adirondack Park, New York changed through time and the interplay of public goods (Common Pool Resources, CPRs), public land rules and private land rights, and related concepts over 260 years (1760-2020). The database was the basis for a doctoral dissertation titled "Blue Lining: Assessing the Resilience of Adirondack Park, New York Using Polycentricity and Panarchy Frameworks." The goal of the dissertation was to assess patterns and changes in institutional rules, actors and arrangements before and after establishment of the public Adirondack Forest Preserve in 1885 and Adirondack Park in 1892 as those actors and rules were modified and as both internal and external events influenced the SES as it moved through different phases of the adaptive cycle through space and time (see panarchy). Using the database, I identified which organizations and events contributed to natural resource and CPR policy. Individual capture history affects site use and defensive behavior of foraging eastern copperheads at a recreational site in eastern Kentucky, 2022

This package contains behavioral, demographic, and environmental data from a study investigating the role individual capture history plays in shaping foraging and defensive behaviors of eastern copperheads (Agkistrodon contortrix) at a ~0.1 hectare recreational site in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Wolfe county, Kentucky. Behavioral data was collected using a four-stage trial simulating in-situ encounters between humans and vipers, where each stage is scored on a 0-3 scale according to the most extreme behavior exhibited. Each individual's total score was the sum of scores in Stages 1-4. Snakes were located via nightly visual surveys of the site during copperheads' active season. Each copperhead was caught after the conclusion of its' behavioral trial, and demographic information including sex, mass, snout-vent length, and total length were recorded. For snakes that had been detected and tagged at this site previous, PIT tag ID and number of years the individual was previously recaptured were also recorded. Air temperature, relative humidity, and soil temperature at a depth of 3 cm were recorded. Within our study system, result suggest that copperheads' defensive response to human approach is best explained by individual capture history, as opposed to temperature or body size.

A Comparison of Recreational and Survey-Grade Side-Scan Sonar Systems in Mapping Reservoir Fish Habitat in 3 Southwest Ohio Reservoirs

Littoral zone aquatic habitat is thought to play an important driver of aquatic organism population dynamics, but historically has been difficult to obtain at the whole waterbody scale because it is costly and time-consuming to collect with traditional aquatic habitat sampling methods. Here we used side-scan sonar to quantification of habitat features over large areas using two levels of equipment: recreational (consumer-grade) and professional (survey-grade). Our goal was to compare performance of the different side-scan sonars by analyzing their ability to map shoreline habitat features (wood, vegetation, and substrate) in three southwest Ohio reservoirs that contain the range of habitat features of interest to fisheries biologists. We used a low-cost Lowrance Active Imaging 3-in-1 system (≈$2,000 USD) recreational sonar and an EdgeTech 6205 system (≈$150,000 USD) survey-grade sonar to collect imagery along the shoreline of three reservoirs in Ohio. Using imagery from each system, We manually delineated patches of submerged woody debris, standing timber, aquatic vegetation, and benthic substrate in GIS. We also compared the size of uniquely identifiable submerged wood from paired imagery to understand potential biases between the systems.

Data from: Insights from a 31-year study demonstrate an inverse correlation between recreational activities and red deer fecundity, with body weight as a mediator

<p>Human activity is omnipresent in our landscapes. Animals can perceive risk from humans similar to predation risk, which could affect their fitness. We assessed the influence of the relative intensity of recreational activities on body weight and pregnancy rates of red deer (<em>Cervus elaphus</em>) between 1985 and 2015. We hypothesized that stress, as a result of recreational activities, affects pregnancy rates of red deer directly and indirectly via a reduction in body weight. Furthermore, we expected non-motorized recreational activities to have a larger negative effect on both body weight and fecundity, compared to motorized recreational activities. The intensity of recreational activities was recorded through visual observations. We obtained pregnancy data from female red deer that were shot during the regular hunting season. Additionally, age and body weight were determined through post-mortem examination. We used two generalized linear mixed models (GLMM) to test the effect of different types of recreation on 1) pregnancy rates and 2) body weight of red deer. Recreation had a direct negative correlation with the fecundity of red deer, with body weight as a mediator as expected. Besides, we found a negative effect of non-motorized recreation on fecundity and body weight and no significant effect of motorized recreation. Our results support the concept of humans as an important stressor affecting wild animal populations at a population level and plead to regulate recreational activities in protected areas that are sensitive. The fear humans induce in large-bodied herbivores and its consequences for fitness may have strong implications for animal populations.</p>

Datasets for "Recreational hunting as an ecosystem service of restoration in the Bay-Delta watershed"

<p>These are the raw data from two surveys of recreational hunters in northern California conducted from 2019-2021 in association with the Delta Stewardship Council funded project&nbsp;&quot;Recreational hunting as an ecosystem service of restoration in the Bay-Delta watershed&quot; (Agreement #18211). Intercept data were collected in-person at hunt sites during deer, upland gamebird, and waterfowl hunt seasons in 2019-20. Data and code from: Recreational fisheries selectively capture and harvest large predators

<p>Size and species selective harvest, inevitably alters the composition of targeted populations and communities. This can potentially harm fish stocks, ecosystem functionality, and related services, as evidenced in numerous commercial fisheries. The high popularity of rod-and-reel recreational fishing, practiced by hundreds of millions globally, raises concerns about similar deteriorating effects. Despite its prevalence, the species and size selectivity of recreational fisheries remain largely unquantified due to a lack of combined catch data and fisheries-independent surveys. This study addresses this gap by using standardised monitoring data and over 60,000 digital angling catch reports from 62 distinct fisheries. The findings demonstrate a pronounced selectivity in recreational fisheries, targeting top-predators and large individuals. Catch-and-release practices reduced the overall harvest by 60 % but did not substantially alter this selectivity. The strong species- and size-specific selectivity mirror patterns observed in other fisheries, emphasising the importance of managing the potential adverse effects of recreational fisheries selective mortality and overfishing.</p>
