Recruitment data from 1997 to 2021 for mussels, barnacles and rockweeds from an LTREB project in the Gulf of Maine, USA
Experimental clearings in macroalgal (Ascophyllum nodosum) stands were made in 1996 to determine if mussel beds and macroalgal stands on protected intertidal shores in New England represent alternative community states. Uncleared control plots and four sizes of circular clearings (1m, 2m, 4m and 8m in diameter), which mimicked ice scour events, were established in A. nodosum stands at 12 sites on Swan’s Island, Maine, USA. The purpose of these datasets is to provide access to data on recruitment of mussels, barnacles and fucoid seaweeds in the 60 experimental plots from 1997 to 2021. Earlier versions of the data prior to 2013 can be found in Ecological Archives (E090-039 and E096-274). This EDI version includes corrections of errors in the versions in Ecological Archives. Research was funded by NSF's LTREB program.
Effects of Warming on Tree Species Recruitment at Harvard Forest and Duke Forest since 2009
Climate change is restructuring forests of the United States, although the details of this restructuring are currently uncertain. Rising temperatures of 2 to 8 deg C and associated changes in soil moisture will shift the competitive balance between species that compete for light and water, changing their abilities to produce seed, germinate, grow, and survive. We are using large scale experiments to determine the effects of warming on the most sensitive stage of species distributions, i.e., recruitment, in mixed deciduous forests in southern New England and in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Two questions organize our proposed research: (1) Might temperate tree species near the "warm" end of their range in the eastern United States decline in abundance during the coming century due to projected warming? and (2) Might trees near the "cool" end of their range in the eastern United States increase in abundance, or extend their range, during the coming 100 years because of projected warming? To explore these questions, we are exposing seedlings to air and soil warming experiments in two eastern deciduous forest sites; one at the Harvard Forest (HF) in central Massachusetts, and the other at the Duke Forest (DF) in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. We focus on tree species common to both Harvard and Duke Forests (such as red, black, and white oaks), those near northern range limits (black oak, tulip poplar), and those near southern range limits (yellow birch, sugar maple). At each site, we plant seeds in common gardens established in temperature-controlled, open-top chambers. The experimental design is replicated and fully factorial and involves three temperature regimes (ambient, +3 deg C and +5 deg C) and two light regimes (closed forest canopy (low light) and gap conditions (high light)). Overwintering Fires from 2009-2010 Burns near Fairbanks, Alaska: Post-fire Seedling Recruitment Collected 2023
This dataset contains data from adjacent overwintering and single-season burn sites. For the overwintering fires, we targeted locations that had burned in the summers of 2009, smouldered through the winter months, and reignited in 2010. Adjacent to these overwintering sites, we identified single-season burn sites from within portions of the 2009 fires that were unaffected by overwintering. A total of seven overwintering fire sites and four single-season fire sites were sampled. Within each site, three plots were established. Data inlcudes within plot measurments of post-fire seedling composition and density, residual SOL, burn depth estimated by black spruce adventitious roots, thaw depth, and pre-fire tree species composition and estimates of combustion. This is one of three packages from this project; this one contains the seedling recruitment data.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Coral Community Dynamics: Coral Recruitment
These data describe the recruitment of scleractinian corals to unglazed terracotta tiles secured independently to horizontal reef surfaces. The tiles are positioned horizontally to create a cryptic habitat beneath (approximately 1 cm high) and are in place approximately 6 months at a time; they are replaced ca. January and September. The tiles are bleached and inspected for coral skeletons using a dissecting microscope. Coral recruits are resolved to three families (Poritidae, Acroporidae, Pocilloporidae, and "others") and are scored on upper, lower and side surfaces. Data are available for the back reef (2006-present) and outer reef (2007-present).
Plant recruitment and seed quality in the Black Sand extended growing season experiment for East Knoll, Audubon, Lefty, and Trough sites, 2018 - 2020.
As a result of climate change, the Rocky Mountain Front Range is experiencing warmer summers and earlier snowmelt. Due to the importance of snow for regulating soil temperature, growing season length, and available moisture in alpine ecosystems, even small shifts in the snow-free period could have large impacts. The focus of the Black Sand Extended Growing Season Length Experiment is to examine how terrain-related differences in climate exposure influence the way alpine habitats respond to climate change via earlier snowmelt. To simulate how climate exposure may affect plant communities, NWT LTER researchers established 5 experimental sites, each containing a pair 10 x 40m rectangular plots. These sites include north and south facing aspects, subalpine and alpine tundra meadows and a range of hydrological conditions (e.g. dry meadows, moist meadows, wet meadows). We accelerated snowmelt in one plot at each site by adding chemically inert black sand, while keeping the second plot as an unmanipulated control; black sand was added to control plots after snow had naturally melted. We used open top warming chambers (OTCs) to increase summer temperature in three subplots within each of the 10 x 40 m plots. This dataset includes measurements of plant recruitment and seed quality.
SBC LTER: Reef: Benthic Composition Experiment: recruitment sampling
These data quantify the richness and abundance of mobile invertebrates settling and recruiting on brushes across 5 sampling sites (Arroyo Quemado, Naples, Isla Vista, Mohawk, Carpentaria) along the Santa Barbara Coast and 2 sites at Santa Cruz Island (San Pedro Point, and Cavern Point). Sampling began December 2021 and is conducted seasonally every 3 months. Data are collected from brushes that are attached to randomly chosen rock plates within two circular plots at each sampling site. Plot 1 represents the control plot with no giant kelp removal and plot 2 represents the kelp clearing plot where all giant kelp are removed. Additionally, understory algae are removed seasonally from half of the rock slates for both plots (Plot 1 rock plates #1-6 and Plot 2 rock plates #13-18). Recruitment is measured as a proportion of the number of individuals found on the recruitment brushes.
Oyster recruitment to standardized ceramic tiles on the Virginia Coast in 2018, 2019, and 2021
This dataset contains measurements of Eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) recruitment to standardized ceramic tiles deployed across intertidal oyster reef sites in the Virginia Coast Reserve. Recruitment is defined as the number of macroscopic oyster recruits (less than or equal to 25 mm shell height) per square centimeter of tile surface, capturing settlement and early post-settlement survival. Data were collected in 2018, 2019, and 2021 across 9-16 reef sites per year, including both natural and restored reefs. The dataset supports research on spatial and environmental drivers of oyster recruitment and has been validated against natural reef substrate data for comparability.

<p>Dataset of <span>Hegoburu et al., Social buffering switches fear to safety encoding by oxytocin recruitment of central amygdala buffer neurons, Nature Communications.</span></p> <p><span>ABSTRACT</span></p> <p><span>The presence of a companion can reduce fear, but the precise neural mechanisms underlying this social buffering of fear (SBF) are incompletely known. We studied SBF in male and female rats, and its encoding in the amygdala of males, that were fear-conditioned (FC) to auditory conditioned stimuli (CS). Pharmacological, opto,- and/or chemogenetic interventions showed that oxytocin (OT) signaling from hypothalamus-to-central amygdala (CeA) projections was required for acute fear reduction in the presence, and SBF retention 24h later without the companion. Single-unit recordings with optetrodes revealed fear-encoding CeA neurons (characterized by increased CS-responses after FC) were inhibited by SBF and blue light (BL) stimulation of OTergic projections. Other CeA neurons increased CS responses only after SBF exposure. Their baseline activity was enhanced by BL and exposure to the companion. SBF thus switches the CS from encoding "fear" to "safety" by OT-mediated recruitment of a distinct group of CeA "buffer neurons".</span></p> <p> </p>
Statistical analysis and dataset for: Invasive ants fed spinosad collectively recruit to known food faster yet individually abandon food earlier
<p>Linked to the journal article published in bioRxiv (https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.06.20.599949).</p> <p><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p> <p>Current management strategies applied to invasive ants rely on slow-acting insecticides which aim to delay the ant’s ability to detect the poison until its effects are noticeable. Despite this, most control efforts are unsuccessful, likely due to bait abandonment and insufficient sustained consumption. Conditioned taste aversion, a learned avoidance of a particular taste, is a crucial survival mechanism which prevents animals from repeatedly ingesting toxic substances. However, whether ants are capable of this delayed association between food taste and subsequent illness remains largely unexplored. Here, we exposed colonies of the highly invasive Argentine ant, <em>Linepithema humile</em>, to a sublethal dose of the slow-acting insecticide spinosad. We combined measurements of individual-level feeding patterns with quantification of collective preferences and foraging dynamics to investigate the potential effects of the toxicant on behaviour. Collectively, ants preferred an odour associated with a previously experienced food, even if this contained spinosad, over a novel one. However, at the individual-level, previous exposure to spinosad resulted in reduced food consumption, as a consequence of earlier food abandonment. Moreover, while control-treated colonies recruited slower to a food source which tasted like a previously experienced one, spinosad-exposed colonies recruited equally fast to both novel and familiar foods. Although it appears that ants are unable to develop a conditioned taste aversion to sublethal doses of spinosad, ingestion of even small amounts of the toxicant strongly influences foraging behaviour. Understanding the subtle effects of slow-acting pesticides on ant cognition and behaviour can ultimately inspire the development of more efficient control methodologies.</p>
Tree recruitment from sites across Southern Michigan including the University of Michigan Biological Station, Pellston, MI (2022)
As a result of current climate change, flooding events are becoming more frequent and lasting longer, resulting in temporal floods in areas that have not historically experienced this disturbance. One critical aspect of forest dynamics that could be significantly impacted by increasing flooding is tree species recruitment. While adult trees may be able to survive temporary flooding, establishing seedlings with shallow root systems may not. A single flooding event could jeopardize decades of recruitment if seedlings are unable to survive the anaerobic conditions imposed by higher water levels. Despite the potential impact of flooding on forest dynamics, there is little information on seedling recruitment patterns after exposure to flooding. To understand how flooding conditions could possibly be impacting forest recruitment, we conducted a field observational study across seven temperate forests. We gathered data on seedling abundance and diversity in areas with signs of recent flooding, as well as in nearby control (dry) areas. Our results document the adverse effects flooding conditions have on temperate forest recruitment dynamics, providing insights into how tree recruitment might be impacted by shifts in flooding patterns.
Virgin Islands National Park: Coral Reef: Recruitment Tiles
In this study, coral recruitment was measured on a kilometer-wide scale on shallow (5–6 m depth) fringing reefs in St. John, US Virgin Islands, with the objective of determining the extent to which variation in recruitment was affected by biophysical coupling involving temperature and flow. Coral recruitment was measured using settlement tiles deployed at 10 sites along 10 km of shore. The tiles were first deployed in August 2006, and thereafter replaced every ≈6 months to sample from either August to January, or January to August over 2 years. Seawater temperature was recorded at the 10 sites using logging thermistors, and flow was quantified using drogues. Overall, corals recruited at a rate equivalent to 76 corals m− 2 6 months− 1, and were represented mostly by poritids (43% of recruits), agaricids (29%), faviids (17%) and siderastreids (7%). Although the density of recruits differed among sites in a pattern that varied among periods and years, there was a consistent trend for mean density to decline from ≈ 4 corals tile− 1 at eastern sites, to ≤ 1 coral tile− 1 at western sites. One aspect of seawater temperature – the daily range – differed among sites and was greater at western compared to eastern sites, and while it was related inversely to recruitment over one of the sampling periods, it was equivocal as a physical process affecting recruitment. Instead, our results are consistent with biophysical coupling involving patch depletion and downstream filtering, whereby patches of coral larvae are delivered to the south shore of St. John and depleted of larvae through settlement as the water progresses westward.
Fall 2012 mid-marsh and creekbank survey of adult and recruit Littoraria irrorata abundance at GCE LTER sampling sites 1-10
The abundance of Littoraria irrorata was investigated at ten sampling sites within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystem (GCE) LTER study area in October 2012. Visual counts of adult Littoraria were conducted within 0.5m x 0.5m creekbank and mid-marsh quadrats in line with permanent GCE vegetation plots. "Recruit" Littoraria (1-4 mm shell length) were found and counted by looking inside all leaf furls within a nested quadrat (0.25m x 0.25m). This method is a new part of the annual GCE monitoring starting in 2012, and supplements the invertebrate data that has been collected since October 2000.
MCR LTER: Coral Reefs: Coral recruitment to 25 m2 plots on the forereef surrounding Moorea, French Polynesia, 2011-2015
These data report the number of Pocilloporid, Acroporid and Poritiid corals recruiting annually to permanent 5 m X 5 m plots established at a depth of approximately 10 m on the forereef of Moorea, French Polynesia. Plots were established following an outbreak (2007-2010) of the corallivorous crown-of-thorns seastars (Acanthaster planci) and the close passage of Cyclone Oli to Moorea in February, 2010. These two perturbations resulted in a significant loss of live coral coral from the forereef on an island-wide scale (crown-of-thorns) and the loss of habitat structural complexity from forereef habitats on Moorea's north shore (Cyclone Oli). Data were obtained by counting all Pocilloporid, Acroporid and Poritiid coral recruits < 3 cm in colony diameter observed within 25 5 m x 5 m plots established at four sites in a depth of approximately 10 m on the forereef of Moorea, French Polynesia. Two sites, Resilience 1 (R1) containing five 5 m x 5 m plots and Resilience 2 (R2) containing ten 5 m x 5 m plots were established along the north shore of the island. Two additional sites, Resilience 4 (R4) and Resilience 5 (R5), each containing five 5 m x 5 m plots were established on the southeast and southwest shores of the island, respectively. The locations of the plots are permanently marked using stainless steel eye-bolts cemented into the reef matrix so that counts of coral recruits can be made repeatedly within the same plots on an annual basis. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Finding Signals in the Noise of Coral Recruitment, data for Edmunds 2021 Coral Reefs
These data, looking at coral recruitment were collected in Moorea, French Polynesia, measured over 13 years, and tested for associations with environmental conditions. Recruitment of spawning pocilloporid corals was recorded using settlement tiles immersed for ~ 6 months at 10 m and 17 m depth, biannually, and the environment was quantified through seawater clarity (Kd490), surface and bottom flow speeds, coral cover, and temperature. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. <p>Single-cell RNA-seq dataset from sorted CD11bInt, F4/80Hi, CD64+ mouse liver cells in naive or Leishmania infantum-infected animals at 42 d.p.i.. Data analyses and results are described in manuscript: "Kupffer cell and recruited macrophage heterogeneity orchestrate granuloma maturation and hepatic immunity in visceral leishmaniasis". Data files are Seurat objects in RDS format. Filtered-out potential doublets, low quality cells and dying cells (excluded cells with <1000 genes detected, cells with >6000 genes detected, cells with mitochondrial gene expression > 10% and cells with <5000 transcript molecules). Data normalization, scaling and integration performed using Seurat.</p> <p>Filtered dataset containing all KCs and macrophages is in the "pessenda_KC_Macro_seurat" file.</p> <p>Our data were then mapped onto a reference dataset published by Remmerie et al. Coral recruitment and calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) accretion are fundamental processes that help maintain coral reefs. Many reefs worldwide have experienced degradation, including a decrease in coral cover and biodiversity. Successful coral recruitment helps degraded reefs to recover, while CaCO₃ accretion by early successional benthic organisms maintains the topographic complexity of a coral reef system. It is therefore important to understand the processes that affect coral recruitment and CaCO₃ accretion rates in order to understand how coral reefs recover from disturbances. The aim of this thesis was to determine how biophysical forcing factors affect coral recruitment, calcification and bioerosion on a pristine coral reef.
California Blue Oak reproduction and recruitment, Sierra Foothills, 2005-2010
This data archive contributes to the study of blue oak conservation by quantifying reproductive success (numbers of new seedlings and their sizes) and survival and growth of the younger life stages (seedlings and saplings), and by exploring how the timing of grazing, topographical variables, and rainfall limit reproduction, growth, and survival for these life stages, helping to identify potential management and restoration strategies to enhance the population viability of blue oak. We followed a population of blue oak (Quercus douglasii) seedlings and saplings in the Sierra Nevada foothills, measuring adult seed production and initial seedling recruitment (number and size of new seedlings), seedling growth and survival, seedling recruitment to saplings (growing greater than 10 cm in height), and sapling growth and survival. We tested the impacts on these demographic processes of timing and intensity of grazing, light availability, water availability, and individual size. We published our analysis of these data as part of the 8th Oak Woodland Symposium. This data archive contains the underlying data for our analysis plus some data we did not include in our analysis (residual dry matter, photosynthetically active radiation, percent exotic/native cover), including raw data and R and Perl scripts used to format them for analysis, and additional information not included in the conference proceedings.
