Data from: The Drosophila Genetic Reference Panel (DGRP) on locomotor activity across different environmental conditions

<p>In nature, organisms are exposed to variable and occasionally stressful environmental conditions. Responses to diurnal and seasonal fluctuations, such as temperature and food accessibility, involve adaptive behavioral and physiological changes. While much work has been done on understanding the genetic architecture and evolutionary potential of stress tolerance traits under constant thermal conditions, there has been less focus on the quantitative genetic background in variable environments. In this study, we use the <em>Drosophila</em> Genetic Reference Panel (DGRP) to investigate locomotor activity, a key behavioral trait, under variable natural thermal conditions during the summer in a temperate environment. Male flies from 100 DGRP lines were exposed to natural thermal and light conditions in <em>Drosophila</em> activity monitors across three experimental days. We found that activity was highly temperature- and time-dependent and varied between lines both within and between days. Further, we observed variation in genetic and environmental variance components, with low to moderate estimates of the heritability for locomotor activity, consistently peaking in the afternoons. Moreover, we showed that the estimated genetic correlations of locomotor activity between two time points decreased as the absolute differences in ambient temperature was increased. In conclusion, we find that the genetic background for locomotor activity is environment specific and we conclude that more variable and unpredictable future temperatures will likely have a strong impact on the evolutionary trajectories of behavioral traits in ectotherms.</p>

Genomic reference data for calculating conditional & conjuncational false discovery rates with cfdr.pleio

<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>This data set provides genomic reference information extracted from the 1000 Genomes Project for calculating conditional and conjunctional false discovery rates for genetic variants that are pleiotropic for pairs of phenotypes.</p> <ol> <li>genref.zip is preprocessed information that can be directly used with the R package cfdr.pleio, available from github<br> &nbsp;</li> <li>genref_rawdata.zip contains raw data downloaded from the 1000 Genome projects. You only need to download this if you want to re-create or modify the preprocessed reference data from above. Bertalanffy's growth curves of A. anatina duck mussels in 18 Polish lakes with reference to living conditions

<p>1. Post-maturation growth leading to indeterminate growth patterns is widespread in nature. However, its adaptive value is unclear. Life history theory suggests this allocation strategy may be favoured by temporal pulses in the intensity of mortality and/or the capacity to produce new tissues.</p> <p>2. Addressing the origin of indeterminate growth and the variability of growth patterns, we studied the growth of duck mussels, <i>Anodonta anatina</i>, a pan-European unionid, in 18 Polish lakes. For each population the sex, size and age of collected mussels were measured to estimate Bertalanffy's growth curve parameters. We integrated information on <i>A. anatina</i> mortality rates, lake trophy, biofouling by zebra mussels, <i>Dreissena polymorpha</i>, and the prevalence of parasitic trematode larvae to identify selective conditions in lakes.</p> <p>3. We found two sources of mortality in <i>A. anatina</i> populations, pertaining to adverse effects of zebra mussel biofouling and trophy state on mussel survival. Additionally, populations with heavier biofouling presented a smaller abundance of parasites, indicative of a relationship between filtering intensity and contraction of water-borne trematode larvae by filtering <i>A. anatina</i>.</p> <p>4. Consistently for each sex, populations with a greater trophy-related mortality were characterized in <i>A. anatina</i> by a smaller asymptotic size <i>L<sub>max</sub></i>, indicative of a life history response to mortality risk involving early maturation at a smaller body size. In all populations, females featured higher mortality and larger asymptotic size <i>vs.</i> males.</p> <p>5. Our findings support a theoretical view that adaptive responses to selection involve adjustments in the lifetime resource allocation patterns. These adjustments should be considered drivers of the origin of indeterminate growth strategy in species taking parental care by offspring brooding in body cavities.</p>

Dissecting transcriptional responses of nucleolin mutants to red light stimulation and darkness in ground reference conditions

Understanding plant adaptive responses to the space environment is a requisite for enabling space farming. Spaceflight produce deleterious effects on plant cells particularly affecting ribosome biogenesis a complex stress-sensitive process coordinated with cell division and differentiation known to be activated by red light. Here we have used mutants from the two nucleolin genes in Arabidopsis (NUC1 and NUC2) encoding the main regulator of the ribosome biogenesis in the nucleolus in order to better understand their role in adaptive response mechanisms to stress. Thus we show that nucleolin stress-related gene NUC2 can compensate the environmental stress provided by darkness in nuc1 plants while nuc2 plants are not able to provide a complete response to red light. These ground control findings as part of the ESA/NASA Seedling Growth spaceflight experiments will determine the basis for the identification of a genetic background enabling an adaptive advantage for plants in future space experiments.
