HOSENG trial – HOme-based oral SElf-testiNG for absent and refusing individuals during a door-to-door HIV testing campaign: a cluster randomised clinical trial in rural Lesotho

These are pseudo-anonymised data from the HOSENG randomized trial: " HOSENG trial – HOme-based oral SElf-testiNG for absent and refusing individuals during a door-to-door HIV testing campaign: a cluster randomised clinical trial in rural Lesotho". The data dictionary explains the data available in the dataset. Between July 2018 and December 2018, 10516 eligible individuals from 106 consenting villages were enrolled from two districts of Lesotho, and followed up for a maximum of 120 days. Occupancy model for Rattus spp. in high and low human human refuse supplementation conditions

Globally, the genus Rattus is one of the most influential exotic species due to its high rates of competitive exclusion and large dietary breadth. However, the specific foraging strategies of urban and urban-adjacent populations remain largely unknown. We examined Rattus spp. dependency on human food supplementation in a peri-urban population. Through a natural experiment made possible by the COVID-19 shelter in place order in Santa Cruz California, USA, we measured changes in activity between invasive rats and native rodents with and without human supplementation. We measured invasive rat presence in normal (pre-COVID) conditions near dining halls and similar waste sources, and again under COVID lockdown conditions where all sources of human supplementation were removed. We found a decrease in Rattus presence after the removal of human refuse (p < 0.001), while native small mammal presence remained unchanged. These results have strong conservation implications, as they suggest that proper waste management is an effective, targeted, and less-invasive form of population control over conventional forms of poison.

Data and code for: Local infectious disease experience influences vaccine refusal rates: a natural experiment

Vaccination has been critical to the decline in infectious disease prevalence in recent centuries. Nonetheless, vaccine refusal has increased in recent years, with complacency associated with reductions in disease prevalence highlighted as an important contributor. We exploit a natural experiment in Glasgow at the beginning of the 20th century to investigate whether prior local experience of an infectious disease matters for vaccination decisions. Our study is based on smallpox surveillance data and administrative records of parental refusal to vaccinate their infants. We analyse variation between administrative units of Glasgow in cases and deaths from smallpox during two epidemics over the period 1900–1904, and vaccine refusal following its legalisation in Scotland in 1907 after a long period of compulsory vaccination. We find that lower local disease incidence and mortality during the epidemics were associated with higher rates of subsequent vaccine refusal. This finding indicates that complacency influenced vaccination decisions in periods of higher infectious disease risk, responding to local prior experience of the relevant disease, and has not emerged solely in the context of the generally low levels of infectious disease risk of recent decades. These results suggest that vaccine delivery strategies may benefit from information on local variation in incidence.

Data from: Social disappointment and partner presence affect long-tailed macaque refusal behaviour in an "inequity aversion" experiment

Protest in response to unequal reward distribution is thought to have played a central role in the evolution of human cooperation. Some animals refuse food and become demotivated when rewarded more poorly than a conspecific, and this has been taken as evidence that non-human animals, like humans, protest in the face of inequity. An alternative explanation - social disappointment – shifts the cause of this discontent away from the unequal reward, to the human experimenter who could – but elects not to – treat the subject well. This study investigates whether social disappointment could explain frustration behaviour in long-tailed macaques, Macaca fascicularis. We tested 12 monkeys in a novel `inequity aversion' paradigm. Subjects had to pull a lever and were rewarded with low-value food; in half of the trials, a partner worked alongside the subjects receiving high-value food. Rewards were distributed either by a human or a machine. In line with the social disappointment hypothesis, monkeys rewarded by the human refused food more often than monkeys rewarded by the machine. Our study extends previous findings in chimpanzees and suggests that social disappointment plus social facilitation or food competition effects drive food refusal patterns.
