Date set for the manuscript: The Role of Sediment Gas Storage in the Methane Dynamics of a Shallow Freshwater Reservoir

<p>The dataset supports the findings of the manuscript entitled: Linking Sediment Gas Storage to the Methane Dynamics in a Shallow Freshwater Reservoir. The manuscript presents results based on in-situ monitoring at the main pre-dam of the Wupper reservoir. The reservoir is located in Germany and the monitoring was conducted from March 2020 to November 2021. The main goal of the monitoring was to measure the spatial variability of methane fluxes and its dynamics in the reservoir. The methane budget of the reservoir was then analysed in combination with estimates of the amount of free gas stored in the sediment matrix, which were derived from acoustic observations. The findings are discussed in the manuscript.</p> <p>Therefore, the dataset provided as an xlsx file includes separate sheets for:</p> <ul> <li>Sediment measurements of potential methane production (PMP), loss on ignition (LOI), dissolved methane (CH<sub>4</sub>) in porewater, carbon and nitrogen content.</li> <li>Gas content in the sediment estimated from maximum acoustic backscatter for 2020 and 2021 for the reservoir spatial grid.</li> <li>Monthly time-series of methane fluxes (oxidation, diffusion, ebullition, and potential flux at the sediment water interface - PSWI) for each monitoring location and for the reservoir (average of all monitoring locations) with the inclusion of degassing at the dam overflow and advective methane transport (Net-export) by inflow and outflow.</li> <li>Time series of daily mean values of ebullition and environmental parameters monitored in the reservoir.</li> </ul> <p>Explanations and units are provided in column labels. NaN refers to missing data.</p> <p>In this version (Version 2), the calculation of the PSWI has been corrected. It is now calculated as the vertically integrated potential methane production over the top 30 cm layer of the sediment.</p>

Dataset on sub-daily vertical profiles of physicochemical parameters and chlorophyll concentration in El Val reservoir, together with its daily meteorological data, storage state and downstream flow (2018-2022).

This dataset contains the physicochemical parameters and chlorophyll concentration of El Val reservoir (province of Zaragoza, Spain), together with its meteorological conditions, the water level, the stored volume and the flow rate of the effluent, the Queiles River, a few meters downstream of the dam. These data are useful to feed deterministic, data driven or hybrid hydrological models with different purposes, like the identification of the impact of meteorological conditions on the physicochemical properties of the reservoir, like the thermal stratification, as well as the assessment of different management strategies in the reservoir. The original data were collected by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro (CHE) and were published in real time through the web page of the Ebro Automatic Water Quality Information System (SAICA Ebro by its initials in Spanish) and the Ebro Automatic Hydrographic Information System (SAIH Ebro by its initials in Spanish). Then, the CHE curated the data that are finally available to the citizens under request by variable and date. In order to facilitate their availability and reuse, these data have been gathered, pre-processed and packaged in the form of datasets. Specifically, they are structured in four data tables: vertical profiles of physicochemical data in the reservoir, meteorological data in the same basin, water level and stored water volume in the reservoir and water flow rate of the Queiles River downstream of the reservoir.

Data from: Seasonal and spatial dynamics of gas ebullition in a temperate water-storage reservoir

Gas ebullition of river impoundments plays an increasingly significant role, particularly in transporting methane CH4 from their sediments to the atmosphere, and contributing to the global carbon budget and global warming. Quantifying stochastic and episodic nature of gas ebullition is complicated especially when conventionally conducted by using coverage-limited gas traps. Current knowledge of seasonality in a reservoir's gas ebullition is lacking in the literature. For this reason, advanced acoustic surveying was intensively applied to determine spatiotemporal distributions of gas ebullition in a European water-storage reservoir for two years. Additionally, the sampling was accompanied with gas collecting for analyzing gas composition. The gas released from the reservoir was primarily composed of CH4 (on average 52%, up to 94%). The longitudinal distribution of gas ebullition was mainly determined by a proximity to the river inflow as a source of organic matter. A magnitude of ebullitive fluxes within the reservoir varied up to 1,300 mL m-2 d-1(30 mmol CH4 m-2 d-1). The most significant period of ebullition has turned out to be in fall, on average reaching a sevenfold ebullitive flux (70 mL m-2 d-1, 1.6 mmol CH4 m-2 d-1) higher than in the rest of the season. A substantial contribution to the fall peak was induced by an expansion of gas ebullition into greater depths, covering two thirds of the reservoir in late fall. The study demonstrates that the ebullitive fluxes of the temperate water storage reservoir were correlated to season, depth, and inflow proximity.

Pre SWOT Hydrology Global Lake/Reservoir Storage Time Series V2

The Global Lake/Reservoir Storage Time Series is derived from the Surface Water Height Time Series and Surface Water Extent Mask Time Series products. The purpose of this dataset is to provide surface water storage estimates for several hundred lakes and reservoirs across the globe. These time series potentially span a 25 year time period, from late 1992 to 2017, satisfying the project goal of ESDR creation with a suitable level of quality that supports long-term trend analysis and global water dynamics models. This product is readily accessible and is of direct use to both water managers and the scientific community worldwide, and allows for improved assessment and modeling of the human impact on the global water cycle. These pre SWOT data are derived from satellites to provide hydrological measurements. The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission will have hydrology as one of its objectives. This dataset does not have the same variables as SWOT, but does provide hydrological measurements with typical quality flagging typical of satellite data. Not only does it provide science information, it can also assist hydrological users new to satellite data with the satellite data formats and variables before SWOT launches.
