Space resource utilization of dominant species integrates abundance- and functional-based processes for better predictions of plant diversity dynamics

Sustainable ecosystem management relies on our ability to predict changes in plant diversity and to understand the underlying mechanisms. Empirical evidence demonstrates that abundance- and functional-based processes simultaneously explain the loss of plant diversity in response to human activities. Recently, a novel indicator based on percent cover (CoverD) and maximum height (HeightD) of the dominant plant species – Space Resource Utilization (SRUD) – has proven to give robust and better predictions of plant diversity dynamics than community biomass. Whether the superior predictive ability of SRUD is due to its capacity to simultaneously capture abundance- and functional-based processes remains unknown. Here, we tested this hypothesis by quantifying mechanistic links between changes in SRUD and biodiversity in response to nutrients and herbivores. Furthermore, we assessed the relative contribution of dominant, intermediate, and rare species to reduced density of individuals by combining null model analysis with field experiments. We found that SRUD successfully captured changes in ground-level light availability and changes in the number of individuals to predict plant diversity dynamics, and each of CoverD and HeightD partly and independently contributed to both processes. Comparative results from null model analysis and field experiments confirmed that individual losses of dominant, intermediate, and rare species followed non-random processes. Specifically, compared with random loss process, rare species lost proportionally more individuals and thus disproportionately contributed to species loss, while dominant and intermediate species lost less. Our results demonstrate that SRUD captures both abundance- and functional-based processes thus explaining why SRUD provides more accurate predictions of changes in species diversity. Given that rare species can play an important role in shaping community structure, resisting against invasion, impacting higher trophic levels, and providing multiple ecosystem functions, reducing the SRU of dominant species could alleviate the risk of exclusion of rare species by mitigating abundance- and functional-based competition processes.

Dataset for: Online Virtual Machine Provisioning under Uncertainty: A Robust Approach to Ultimate Resource Utilization

In cloud resource scheduling and management, efficiency and quality are two vital yet conflicting objectives. Cloud providers, such as Huawei, prioritize quality by avoiding hotspots and aim to optimize and increase the utilization efficiency of PM resources without compromising quality. The typical online VM scheduling problem in cloud practice can be stated as follows: given a fixed number of PMs and a queue of arriving VMs, the goal is to place as many VMs as possible onto the PMs while ensuring that no hotspots occur.

The trace consists of a total of 297 instances, where each instance is represented by a JSON file named in the format X-1.json, X-2.json, and X-3.json. Here, X represents the number of PMs capable of hosting the arriving VMs, ranging from 2 to 100. For example, 50-1.json indicates that there are 50 available PMs to host the arriving VMs. For each value of X, there are three replicas denoted by the suffixes 1, 2, and 3.

There are multiple flavors of PM available in our cloud service provider. Readers can refer to our online paper, which we will provide the link for below, to learn about the specific flavor we used for academic and testing purposes. However, they are also free to use other typical flavors as per their requirements.

Each JSON file contains information about the VMs waiting to be assigned to PMs, and the fields for these VMs are as follows (each line represents a VM):

Created_at_point: the timestamp when the VM arrives. The list is already sorted in ascending order based on the arrival times.

memory: the memory capacity of the VM defined by its flavor, measured in gigabytes (GB).

duration_point: the timestamps indicating the duration of the VM's usage. Each timestamp represents a 5-minute interval in practice.

vm_util: the real utilized capacity of the VM at each timestamp, with a similar meaning as the Hotspot Resolution trace. The length of the list is equal to the value of "duration_point".

Survival under conditions of variable food availability: Resource utilization and storage in the cold‐water coral Lophelia pertusa

Abstract

Cold-water coral (CWC) reefs are hotspots of biodiversity and productivity in the deep sea, but their distribution is limited by the availability of food, which undergoes complex local and temporal variability. We studied the resource utilization, metabolism, and tissue storage of CWC Lophelia pertusa during an experimentally simulated 3-day food pulse, of 13C15N-enriched phytodetritus, followed by a 4-week food deprivation. Oxygen consumption (0.145 μmol O2 [mmol organic carbon {OC}]−1 h−1), release of particulate organic matter (0.029 μmol particulate organic carbon [POC] [mmol OC]−1 h−1 and 0.005 μmol particulate organic nitrogen [mmol OC]−1 h−1), ammonium excretion (0.004 μmol NH4 + [mmol OC]−1 h−1), tissue C and N content, and fatty acid (FA) and amino acid composition did not change significantly during the experiment. Metabolization of the labeled phytodetritus, however, underwent distinct temporal dynamics. Initially, L. pertusa preferentially used phytodetritus-derived C for respiration (2.2 0.36 nmol C [mmol OC]−1 h−1) and mucus production (0.94 0.52 nmol C [mmol OC]−1 h−1), but those tracer fluxes declined exponentially to <20% within 2 weeks after feeding and then remained stable, indicating that the remainder of the incorporated phytodetritus had entered a tissue pool with lower turnover. Analysis of 13C in individual FAs revealed a mismatch between the FAs incorporated from phytodetritus and the FA requirements of the coral. We suggest that feeding on other resources, such as lipid-rich zooplankton, could fill this deficiency. A release of 10% of their total OC as respired C and POC during the 4-week food deprivation underlines the importance of regular food pulses for CWC reefs.
