DATASET OF RESPONSIBLE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION IN CITIZEN SCIENCE

<p><span>The research aim was to explore what aspects of citizen science (CS) make the involvement of researchers (the ones who implement CS projects) meaningful in terms of responsible research and innovation (RRI) principles. The following research questions were formulated:</span></p> <p><span>1) How does RRI contribute to the meaningfulness of CS projects and in which CS aspects?</span></p> <p><span>2) What motivates researchers to accommodate RRI principles in CS projects? </span></p> <p><span>3) What impedes researchers in accommodating RRI principles in CS projects?</span></p> <p><span>To answer these research questions, a qualitative research approach was employed using individual semi-structured interviews for data collection. Using a purposive criterion-based sample, inclusion criteria were the following:</span></p> <p><span>(i) European researchers (principal investigators/project managers) that are running (at least) one CS project; </span></p> <p><span>(ii) researchers who may represent different organisational settings with scientific orientation (e.g. academia, museums, and others) within Europe; </span></p> <p><span>(iii) the CS project, started before 2013 (year of introducing the concept of RRI into European Union Research and Innovation (EU R&amp;I) policy) should be ongoing during the research conduct, or the CS project started in the period of 2014&ndash;2018 (the year 2014 was a starting point since it is the date of embedding RRI in the EU R&amp;I policy as a mandatory component of all research activities) should be still ongoing; and </span></p> <p><span>(iv) the CS project covers any academic discipline.</span></p> <p><span>To identify potential informants, we used the list of CS projects publicised in Wikipedia (</span><span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_citizen_science_projects"><span>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_citizen_science_projects</span></a></span><span>) and added CS projects from authors&rsquo; home countries. In addition, we posted the invitation to participate in the study in a newsletter within the citizen science community (e.g. ECSA) and in social media targeting specific groups and using hashtags, namely on Facebook and Twitter.</span><span> </span><span>At the end, we identified 117 CS projects relevant to our research aim.</span><span> </span><span>20 CS projects (five females and fifteen males)</span><span> </span><span>consented to take part in the study.</span><span> </span><span>CS projects covered different academic disciplines, such as psychology, zoology, biology, ecology, linguistics, palaeontology, history and others.</span></p> <p><span>We constructed a questionnaire consisting of four items: self-identity and ties with CS, enablers of RRI in CS, limitations of RRI in CS and impact of RRI on CS. Interviews were conducted remotely. The interview language was English, except for one interview that was held in the participant&rsquo;s first language and then translated into English. Though some interviews had minor language-specific flaws (for most informants English is not a native language), they did not interfere with understanding an informant.</span></p> <p><span>Each interview was audio-recorded, transcribed, and pseudonymized if such request was expressed in the informed consent. Average length of interview was 53 minutes. Non-pseudonymised full interviews contained an average of 6,409 words.</span></p> <p><span>Different strategies were used to validate all interview transcripts for purposes of data accuracy and clarifying inaudible responses (e.g. validation of half of transcripts involved two researchers, then validation of eleven transcripts involved interviewees). </span></p> <p><span>Nine informants allowed to publish pseudonymised transcripts while eight informants preferred to have non-pseudonymised transcripts published. <p>This is a short animation video about responsible research and innovation. Watch it here: https://youtu.be/fOG5U2QweBo</p> <p>In research guided by responsible research and innovation (RRI), members of society work with scientists to align both the entire research process and its results with societal needs. The researcher and the research institute or research funder turn openly to citizens and involve the relevant societal actors in formulating research questions and collecting and analysing data. In RRI-guided research, scientists never forget to ask themselves: will our research do good to society and the Earth? What will its long-term social, ethical, and ecological consequences be? If a researcher or research-performing organisation integrates responsibility into their work, they will feel more useful and impactful in their profession, all in order to improve the lives of their fellow human and non-human beings. For this reason, it is important for researchers to reflect on their own organisational operations and change their daily routines. This is exactly what the Co-Change Project started to experiment with. In order to raise awareness of RRI, the project initiated ongoing deliberation within and beyond its own organisations through discussing ethics, gender, and open-science-related topics that engage all units that deal with research and innovation, as well as involving external experts and stakeholders in co-creating change.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

ETHNA Validation Survey on Drivers and Barriers of Responsible Research & Innovation (RRI)

<p>This entry includes the ETHNA Validation Survey on Drivers and Barriers of Responsible Research &amp; Innovation (RRI) questions in PDF and the servey results in Excel. Ths survey was conducted by Centre for Social Innovation (ZSI) as part of the WP4 of the European ETHNA System project. The survey explores potential good RRI practices and possible measures to gauge the RRI institutionalisation progress at research-performing organisations.</p> <p>The online survey was sent in October 2021 to a broad group (10.000+) of potentially relevant expert stakeholders identified through a Web of Science database search with the aim of assessing the relevance of the identified drivers, barriers and good practices of RRI institutionalisation. Altogether 888 responses were received from 69 countries with a balanced gender representation, involving the opinion of mostly senior experts (55% having more than 15 years of experience).&nbsp;After filling out general demographic and organisational information, the respondents rated the perceived relevance of the RRI incentives, barriers and good practices that were the highest ranked at the end of the second consultation phase (using a Likert scale of 1-10).&nbsp;</p>

Global indicators framework for socially responsible research and innovation (RRI): How to monitor public and researcher perspectives (Supplemental material)

<p>This data upload provides a detailed account of indicators that can be used to measure RRI progress around the world&nbsp;against the UNESCO Recommendation for Science and Scientific Researchers at the level of individual researchers and public opinion. This data upload provides supplemental material for an article in Open Research Europe entitled, &#39;Global indicators framework for socially responsible research and innovation (RRI): How to monitor public and researcher perspectives&#39;.</p> <p>Abstract for main article:</p> <p>As calls for more socially responsible research and innovation (RRI) policies and practices grow more insistent, the need for high quality indicators that can be used to evaluate progress is becoming increasingly important. Given the global nature of science, such indicators need to be relevant to countries across all world regions. Moreover, the methodological quality of indicators is critical to provide a strong foundation for long-term comparative measurement of the impacts of different kinds of policy intervention. There is a practical challenge in this effort relating to the uneven mechanisms for data collection and analysis available in different countries. There is also a geopolitical challenge in gaining buy-in from countries with very different, and sometimes competing, agendas. Here, the 2017 UNESCO-led Recommendation on Science and Scientific Researchers is highlighted as an existing vehicle that can enable cooperation on globally comparative measurement of socially responsible research and innovation. In particular, the quadrennial monitoring of the implementation of this wide-ranging global policy instrument that has been ratified by 195 countries affords a unique opportunity to add value for these countries by linking RRI to the 2017 Recommendation while establishing benchmark indicators for RRI more generally. As a practical and methodological contribution to the global community of science and innovation policymakers, researchers and research and innovation stakeholders committed to socially responsible research, this report contains specific, detailed survey questions and response options focusing on the public opinion and individual researchers&rsquo; level of measurement. It provides details of sources of benchmark survey data that have readily available open data that can be used to benchmark the development of socially responsible research and innovation over time from the vantage points of the public and researchers around the world. The aim of this kind of indicators framework is to enable evidence-based practice in socially responsible research and innovation. Robust and practical RRI measurement on a global scale can reduce the risk that well-intentioned but ill-conceived RRI policy and practice interventions create undetected, unchecked, and unreformed negative impacts in practice.</p>

<p>In this ISP Insight Video, coordinator Marianne H&ouml;rlesberger tells you more about the EU Project DigiTeRRI which deals with a Responsible Research &amp; Innovation Approach for transitioning the traditional industry regions into digitalised industry territories. The EU project DigiTeRRI empowers 3 traditional industry regions to harness the opportunities presented by digitalisation. The project has co-created a framework and roadmaps for a responsible transition to self-sustaining, digitalised industrial innovation ecosystems. It has worked out the challenges in the interplay between business, academia, government and society to initiate openness, democratic accountability and responsiveness in a process that will in turn promote resilience within these new, digitalised innovation ecosystems. Important attributes for this transition are also gender equality, science education, open access, public engagement, and ethics, which support both organisations and citizens in adapting the transformation that is revolutionising research, industry, economy, &amp; society. Finally, 12 actions, based on the roadmap goals and objectives in each territory have been developed and implemented. This project has received funding from the European Union&rsquo;s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement n&ordm; 873010.</p>
