Little Tennessee River Riparian Buffer change GIS data: 1998 - 2015
Using high resolution orthoimagery, riparian conditions between 1998 and 2015 were mapped and quantified in the rural upper Little Tennessee River basin in Macon County, North Carolina. Low elevation valley streams in residential areas were targeted, excluding stream segments on U.S. Forest Service (USFS) lands. Impoundments and streams within existing urban centers were also excluded from GIS analysis. Tributary streams were included if they were National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) mapped streams and if they met the study criteria, i.e. low-elevation residential valley streams outside existing urban areas and USFS lands. Due to the size of the watershed and time constraints, only the mainstem Little Tennessee and a portion of its tributary streams could be mapped. A total of 658 km (including both banks) of streams in the study area were mapped and classified. All classifications were made by one interpreter between June 2018 and August 2018. The GIS files are are in .zip archives labeled by imagery year (1998 and 2015). The 1998 GIS files are mislabeled '1999' which was corrected during analysis using R. The code used for analysis is provided in R markdown files.
Effects of drying temperature on potential carbon mineralization and water-extractable organic carbon in Iowa cropland and riparian buffer soils
Measuring carbon dioxide (CO2) produced after re-wetting a previously dried soil is an increasingly popular soil health assay, but there is disagreement on the optimal soil drying temperature. We tested whether soil drying temperature impacts water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) and soil CO2 emissions (potential carbon mineralization) following rewetting of dried soil. Samples were collected at four sites in north-central Iowa, US, and each site had soils planted to corn/soybean or perennial vegetation. The dataset includes measurements of WEOC prior to the incubation experiment, and measurements of CO2 flux and its stable carbon isotope ratio over the course of a 28-day incubation. The manuscript describing these data is under review in Geoderma.

Riparian buffers provide refugia during secondary forest succession
<p>Aim Secondary forests regenerating from human disturbance are increasingly becoming a predominant forest type in many regions, and they play a significant role in forest community dynamics. Understanding the factors that underlie the variation in species responses during secondary succession is important for understanding community assembly and biodiversity monitoring and management. Because species vary in ecology and behavior, responses to ecosystem change should vary among species. Here, we show that habitat type (riparian, upland), phylogeny, and species traits mediate anuran and lizard probability of occurrence and species richness in pasture and secondary forest. Location Sarapiquí and Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. Methods We used phylogenetic occupancy models to estimate assemblage-level and species-specific responses to forest succession in 30 chronosequence sites that include pasture, secondary forest regenerating from pasture, and mature forest sites. Results For the majority of species, we found increasing probability of occurrence in upland habitats as forest regenerated from pasture to secondary forest and similar probability of occurrence in riparian habitats across pasture, secondary forest, and mature forest sites. Species' responses to forest stage were phylogenetically correlated, and the trend was especially strong for anuran response to pasture sites. Anurans with lotic larval habitat had a positive occupancy response to pasture upland habitat and anurans with lentic larval habitat had a variable response to different forest stages compared to mature forest.</p>

Riparian Buffer Classifications for the Upper Little Tennessee River watershed
This data set includes riparian buffer classifications for streams in the Upper Little Tennessee River Watershed that were developed from the corrected streams data set. Riparian buffer classifications were not developed for streams occurring in Nantahala National Forest. The corrected streams data set includes streams mapped by the NC Stream Mapping Program (NCSMP) that have been corrected based on their presence or absence as observed in 2006 aerial imagery. Streams mapped by the NCSMP were downloaded from http://www.ncstreams.org/DataAccess/tabid/257/Default.aspx and corrected using aerial photography for Swain and Macon Counties dated 2006 that were obtained by EEP. Four classes of riparian buffer widths were created based on the presence or absence of woody vegetation in the riparian area as viewed in the 2006 aerial photos. Right and left banks were analyzed separately and include the following classes: 1 = < 30 feet 2 = 30-100 feet 3= > 100 feet, and 4 = underground This data set is intended to characterize riparian buffer conditions for streams in the Upper Little Tennessee River Watershed. The riparian buffer classification data set is believed to provide a reasonable basis for generalizing about sub-watershed and watershed conditions. Riparian buffer classification is also one of the key data sets used to determine aquatic function and stream rehabilitation project potential. This data set provides an initial estimate of likely riparian buffer conditions, but a field examination of the area in question is recommended if accurate information on the current buffer status of specific reaches or properties is desired.

Supporting data for "Riparian buffers can help mitigate biodiversity declines in oil palm agriculture"; doi.org/10.1002/fee.2473
<b>Description: </b><p>Ecological data underpinning the Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment publication "Riparian buffers can help mitigate biodiversity declines in oil palm agriculture" (doi.org/10.1002/fee.2473). <br><br>Data describe species abundance and community composition for 377 species and eight taxonomic groups (insect larvae, dragonflies, dung beetles, fish, frogs, birds, small mammals, large mammals) across 345 riparian sampling locations at the Stability of Altered Forest Ecosystems (SAFE) project study site and surrounding oil palm plantations. Sampling locations captured four distinct riparian habitat treatments across the study site: recovering logged forest (LF), heavily disturbed forest (HDF), riparian buffers (RB) and oil palm rivers (ROP). Compositional metrics are provided for all species within a taxonomic group and forest dependent species only. Forest-dependence was defined based on the sensitivity of a species to habitat conversion according expert opinion. Riparian characteristics used as covariates in hierarchical models, defining the extent and quality of available forest habitat in the immediate vicinity of each sampling locations, are also provided. <br><br>Please note that the raw data underpinning the biodiversity summaries provided are also available for a select number of the taxonomic groups studied:<br>- Dung beetles: https://zenodo.org/record/3906118#.YTY_To5KiUk; https://zenodo.org/record/3906441#.YTY_a45KiUk<br>- Fish: https://zenodo.org/record/4072959#.YTY_pY5KiUk<br>- Frogs: https://zenodo.org/record/1995439#.YTY_z45KiUk<br><br>For specific taxonomic queries, including potential collaborations, please direct enquiries to the lead researcher of that group:<br>- Insect larave/dragonflies: Dr Sarah H. Investigating the effects of retaining riparian forest buffer zones of differing width on stream channel geomorphology
<b>Description: </b><p>To monitor temporal stream shape change over a gradient of RBZ widths, channel cross section measurements were continued at preestablished points that have been present since 2011. The points are marked with 0.4-metre-long PVC pipes that are spray painted yellow for easier identification and surrounding bedrock or roots are also marked at the exact location of the pipes in case a pipe should be eroded away in future. Channel cross sections were calculated using a standardised method. Cross- sectional area (CSA) measurement was repeated for every pre-established cross section point along the stream. These were located 250 m apart and numbered 4- 10, depending on the accessibility of the trails upstream. The stream with a '0 metre' buffer, for instance, had only four measurement points due to a steep waterfall which could not be passed. The CSA of these stream points were re-measured on a yearly basis in 2011 - 2014, 2018 and 2019.</p><p><b>Project: </b>This dataset was collected as part of the following SAFE research project: <a href="https://www.safeproject.net/projects/project_view/210"><b>Investigating the effects of retaining riparian forest buffer zones of differing width on stream channel geomorphology. </b></a></p><p><b>XML metadata: </b>GEMINI compliant metadata for this dataset is available <a href="https://www.safeproject.net/datasets/xml_metadata?id=3476390">here</a></p><p><b>Files: </b>This consists of 1 file: Template_cross_sections.xlsx</p><p><b>Template_cross_sections.xlsx</b></p><p>This file contains dataset metadata and 1 data tables:</p><ol><li><p><b>Stream cross section measurements</b> (described in worksheet CrossSections)</p><p>Description: Cross section measurements</p><p>Number of fields: 7</p><p>Number of data rows: 8377</p><p>Fields: </p><ul><li><b>Identity</b>: Original site label in field data (Field type: id)</li><li><b>Stream</b>: Stream transect (Field type: location)</li><li><b>Site</b>: Location of stream cross section (Field type: location)</li><li><b>DistanceAcross</b>: Distance across the stream at which the measurement was taken (Field type: numeric)</li><li><b>Height</b>: Stream depth (Field type: numeric)</li><li><b>BaseMaterial</b>: Ground cover at the measurement point (Field type: categorical)</li><li><b>Date</b>: Date cross section was measured (Field type: date)</li></ul></li></ol><p><b>Date range: </b>2011-01-12 to 2019-03-30</p><p><b>Latitudinal extent: </b>4.6314 to 4.7345</p><p><b>Longitudinal extent: </b>117.4554 to 117.6414</p>
Data set and analytic codes supporting "The impacts of within-stream physical structure and riparian buffer strips on semi-aquatic bugs in Southeast Asian oil palm"
<p>This deposit contains data set and analytic codes (accompanied with a meta data) supporting "The impacts of within-stream physical structure and riparian buffer strips on semi-aquatic bugs in Southeast Asian oil palm". We assessed the impacts of within-stream physical structure and riparian buffer strips on semi-aquatic bug (Gerromorpha, Hemiptera) communities in oil palm streams in Sabah, Malaysia. Collections of semi-aquatic bugs were conducted from oil palm with and without riparian buffer strips.</p> <p>Several environmental parameters were collected to represent within-stream physical structure. We investigated the impacts on the abundance, biomass, species richness, and community composition of semi-aquatic bugs. Additionally, we studied the effects on the proportion of juveniles as well as female <em>Ptilomera</em> sp. (a morphospecies with clear sexual dimorphism in this study).</p> <p>This research was funded by the Jardine Foundation, the Cambridge Trust, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) (studentship 1122589), Proforest, the Varley Gradwell Travelling Fellowship, the Tim Whitmore Fund, the Panton Trust, the Cambridge University Commonwealth Fund, the Hanne and Torkel Weis-Fogh Fund, and the S.T.
