Data set and scripts - Influence of Festive Periods on Road Safety: Multidimensional Analysis (Road Accidents in Colombia 2017-2021)

<p>This dataset comprises historical information about road accidents in Colombia from 2017 to 2021, titled 'Road Accidents 2017-2021', containing 18,600 records of accident events on roads managed by the National Roads Institute (INV&Iacute;AS, 2021). The dataset includes 41 descriptors and was last updated on July 15, 2022. It has been published under the Open Data initiative (Law 1712 of 2014 on Transparency and Access to National Public Information).</p> <p>In addition to accident information, the dataset integrates a database with holiday dates and road identifiers, ensuring data coherence and quality for data analysis purposes. Statistical analysis is conducted through exploratory data analysis focusing on the years 2017 to 2021, utilizing Python (version 3.10) within the Jupyter Notebooks execution environment and specialized libraries (Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, and Seaborn), due to their ease of application for this dataset. After data normalization, the dataset comprises 18,554 records, with 46 excluded due to inconsistent data formats.</p>

Exploring traffic safety problems and challenges of older roads' users in Louisiana: Causes and countermeasures

<p>It is well established that older pedestrians and drivers with 65 years and above are among the most vulnerable road users. As the number and proportion of older road users (as drivers and pedestrians) grows in many countries, as well as their share in pedestrians&rsquo; and drivers&rsquo; crashes and injuries, it behooves transportation researchers to further investigate the safety and mobility challenges of older road users. This study aims mainly to provide a comprehensive investigation of older pedestrians&rsquo; and drivers&rsquo; safety challenges. To this end, a three-fold research approach is designed to thoroughly examine older road users&rsquo; safety challenges as pedestrians and drivers. First, crash data analysis identified significant risk factors causing/leading older drivers&rsquo; to be involved in vehicle crashes. Second, a driving simulator experiment was performed to further investigate the identified risky conditions from the crash data analysis and literature review. Third, a self-reported survey was conducted across the country to address pedestrians&rsquo; safety challenges, needs, and attitudes toward different pedestrian crossing facilities (i.e., signalized intersections, unsignalized intersections, midblock cross walks with and without flashing lights, and roundabouts). The results of this study provide a better understanding regarding older drivers&rsquo; and pedestrian&rsquo; needs and challenges that should be accommodated to improve their safety and mobility.</p>

Safety of Vulnerable Road Users (VRU's) in Light-Rail Transit (LRT) Environment

<p>Light-rail transit (LRT), which includes modern streetcars, trolleys, and heritage trolleys, is one of the fastest growing modes of public transportation in the United States. To reduce the cost and complexity of construction, most LRT systems have their tracks placed on city streets, in medians, or in separate at-grade rights-of-way with at-grade crossings. Operating light-rail vehicles (LRVs) along these alignments introduces new conflicts and increases the risk of collisions with vulnerable road users (VRUs) including pedestrians, bicyclists, and electric scooter riders.<br> This study has two main objectives: (1) to review and evaluate the existing body of knowledge and the state of practice regarding safety of VRUs in LRT environments; and (2) to synthesize this information and package the results in a &ldquo;Best Practices Resource Guide&rdquo; and a companion &ldquo;PowerPoint Presentation&rdquo; for use in improving the safety of VRUs in existing LRT systems and advancing the professional capacity of transit workforce. Metropolitan Planning Organizations and State DOTs should also benefit from this resource information in the planning and design of new LRT systems.<br> This report presents a wide range of physical, educational, and enforcement treatments for improving the safety of VRUs in LRT environments. The selection of a particular treatment for use at an LRT grade crossing or station should be based on an engineering study whose scope and complexity depend on local conditions. Factors that should be considered during device selection include 1) pedestrian‐LRV collision experience, 2) pedestrian volumes and peak flow rates, 3) train speeds, frequency of trains, number of tracks, and railroad traffic patterns, 4) sight distances available to pedestrians and LRV operators approaching the crossing, and 5) skew angle, if any, of the crossing relative to the LRT tracks.</p>

Relationship between Road Network Characteristics and Traffic Safety

Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;The Transportation and Capital Improvement of the City of San Antonio, Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and other related agencies often make several efforts based on traffic data to improve safety at intersections, but the number of intersection crashes is still on the high side. There is no one size fits all solution for intersections and the City is often usually confronted with doing best value option analysis on different solutions to choose the least expensive yet more advancements. The goal of this project was to obtain the relationship between road network characteristics and public safety with a focus on intersections; perform a thorough analysis of critical intersections with high crash incidents and crash rates within the city of San Antonio, Texas, and analyze key factors that lead to crashes and recommend effective safety countermeasures. Researchers conducted the following tasks: literature review, crash data analysis, factors affecting crashes at intersections, and the development of possible solutions to some of the identified challenges. Several variables and factors were analyzed, including driver characteristics, like age and gender, road-related factors and environmental factors such as weather conditions and time of day ArcGIS was used to analyze crash frequency at different intersections, and hotspot analysis was carried out to identify high-risk intersections. The crash rates were also calculated for some intersections. The research outcome shows that there are more male drivers than female drivers involved in crashes, even though we have more licensed female drivers than male drivers. The highest number of crashes involved drivers within the age range of 15 &ndash; 34 years; this is an indication that intersection crash is one of the top threats to the young generation. The study also shows that the most common crash type is the angle crash which represents over 23% of the intersection crashes. Driver&rsquo;s inattention ranked first among all the contributing factors recorded. The highrisk intersections based on crash frequency and crash rate show that the intersection along the Bandera Road and Loop 1604 is the worst in the city, with 399 crashes and 8.5 crashes per million entering vehicles. The research concluded with some suggested countermeasures, which include public enlightenment and road safety audit as a proactive means of identifying high-risk intersections.&quot;</p>

<p>In the face of the massiveness of content, social advertisements must explore the potential of other dimensions to improve their designs. This paper examines the effect of different levels of graphic explicitness on the attention and perception of road safety ads. An eye-tracking experiment was conducted to assess the visual attention of 60 young millennials and centennials on three ads with images of different levels of explicitness. Participants were agrouped into two groups where they watched two road safety ads with negative valence, but with different levels of explicitness in the second ad seen. For the image and text of each ad, metrics of number of fixations, time to first fixation and total fixation time spent were compared. A survey provided qualitative information about the perception and effectiveness of the ads. Significant effects were found when using negative emotional appeals through explicitness to enhance visual attention and audience perception. But, although the image has prominence, textual design should not be neglected to focus the emotional appeal of the ad.</p>
