Data and R code for machine learning modelling of favourite places and routes of outdoor recreation
<p>This is a script showing the analysis used in a paper submitted for review in Landscape and Urban Planning, titled "Seeing through their eyes: Revealing recreationists’ landscape preferences through viewshed analysis and machine learning", by Carl Lehto, Marcus Hedblom, Anna Filyushkina and Thomas Ranius. </p> <p>The zip file contains an R script, data saved in .rds format and a R workspace. </p>
Innate heuristics and fast learning support escape route selection in mice
<p>### Dataset structure</p> <p>Each experimental session (from one mouse on one arena) was composed of one or more recording. Each recording<br> was saved as a separate video and as such the tracking data and stimuli metadata are saved separately for each<br> recording.</p> <p>The tracking data for each recording is saved in a file `DATE_SESSION_RECORDING_tracking.h5` with DLC pose position for<br> four body parts: nose, neck, body and base of the tail.<br> The video data was acquired at 30 or 40 FPS, 30FPS recordings were upsampled so that all tracking data<br> saved here is at 40 FPS.<br> If `_recording` is missing from the filename, the session had only one recording.</p> <p>The `DATE_SESSION_RECORDING_stimuli.csv` files store stimuli metadata for each recording.<br> The columns `overview_frame` and `overview_frame_end` denote stimulus onset and offset.</p> <p>The `session_metadata.csv` stores metadata about all sessions and recordings in the data set.<br> Metadata include mouse name, arena type (1-5) and if the mouse was naive or not (1/0).</p> <p><br> For the analyses in the manuscript, stimulus times were used to define trials and the tracking data in the few seconds<br> after the stimulus onbset was analzed (from stimulus onset to mouse entering the shelter). For convenience we provide<br> `trials.h5` which stores all tracking data and metadata for all trials and `trials_metadata.csv` that stores the metadata only.</p>

Data from: Not just passengers: Pigeons, Columba livia, can learn homing routes while flying with a more experienced conspecific
For animals that travel in groups, the directional choices of conspecifics are potentially a rich source of information for spatial learning. In this study, we investigate how the opportunity to follow a locally experienced demonstrator affects route learning by pigeons over repeated homing flights. This test of social influences on navigation takes advantage of the individually distinctive routes that pigeons establish when trained alone. We found that pigeons learn routes just as effectively while flying with a partner as control pigeons do while flying alone. However, rather than learning the exact route of the demonstrator, the paired routes shifted over repeated flights, which suggests that the birds with less local experience also took an active role in the navigational task. The efficiency of the original routes was a key factor in how far they shifted, with less efficient routes undergoing the greatest changes. In this context, inefficient routes are unlikely to be maintained through repeated rounds of social transmission, and instead more efficient routes are achieved because of the interaction between social learning and information pooling.
