Community and Conservation Survey in Urban, Suburban and Rural Massachusetts 2013-2018
The dynamics of forest cover and the ecosystem services they provide are shaped by the land use and management decisions of thousands of individual landowners and the land use planning and conservation actions of towns and environmental organizations. Through an interdisciplinary investigation of the land use and forest conservation practices across two urban-to-rural transects between Boston and Central Massachusetts, we investigated the complex and coupled socio-ecological processes that shape the structure, function, and transformation of forested landscapes and how examine these processes may vary along urban-to-rural gradients. The survey data archived here is one element of this larger coupled natural-human systems project. The Community and Conservation Survey collected data regarding landowners’ attitudes and management practices on a variety of issues linked to conservation and the use of their own land. The objectives were to collect data that (a) increase our understanding of how landowners’ attitudes and behaviors vary across urban-to-rural gradients and (b) can be coupled with biogeochemical measurements across the study region to model variation in management behaviors.
Offering ART refill through community health workers versus clinic-based follow-up after home-based same-day ART initiation in rural Lesotho: The VIBRA cluster-randomised clinical trial
<p>These are pseudo-anonymised data from the VIBRA randomized trial: "Offering ART refill through community health workers versus clinic-based follow-up after home-based same-day ART initiation in rural Lesotho: The VIBRA cluster-randomised clinical trial". The data dictionary explains the data available in the dataset. Between August 2018 and May 2019, 257 eligible individuals from 117 consenting villages were enrolled from two districts of Lesotho, and followed up for a maximum of 15 months. Community assets and relative rurality index
<p>The CARR (Community assets and relative rurality index) index is a continuous, multidimensional measure of rurality based on the concept of sustainable development that integrates measures of environmental, social, and economic resources. The index incorporates traditional rurality measures such as population density, distance from metropolitan areas, and developed area with measures of availability and accessibility of 70 different infrastructure types that support essential community services and community amenities. The index uses data last updated in 2019 and is available for census block-groups in the coterminous United States.</p> <p>This repository includes versions of CARR calculated for block groups (original) and versions of CARR aggregated to other conventional spatial units using and area-weighted averaging approach on the original block group data. Each zip folder includes the raw data, a metadata file, and a basic exploratory data analysis document in html format.</p> <p>The information for Version 2 of this repository, and additional information on CARR, can also be found at <a href="ruralityindex.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruralityindex.com</a>.</p>
When female leaders believe that men make better leaders: Empowerment in community-based water management in rural Namibia

Analysing socio-economic and environmental circumstances of rural communities

Biomass and dummy traits matrices were combined to produce functional diversity (FD) indices (FRic = functional richness, FEve = functional evenness, FDiv = functional divergence and FDis = functional dispersion) and community weight mean traits (CWM) matrices. The influences of land use/occupation (Soil matrix) over FD indices were evaluated through Pearson's correlations and over CWM through redundance analysis (RDA) and Pearson's correlations.

Comparing travel behavior and opportunities to increase transportation sustainability in small cities, towns, and rural communities
<p>The vast majority of travel behavior and sustainable transportation research has focused on urban areas. A rural perspective is lacking. In this study, we aim to dive deeper into understanding how people travel and their perceptions and opinions about various components of travel in a majority rural state. By speaking directly with Vermonters through in-person interviews, we obtain uniquely personal points of view and analyze them for commonalities and differences between urban, suburban, and rural Vermonters. We ask questions on day-to-day challenges of traveling, suggestions for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, responses to fuel prices, and opinions on electric vehicles. Some of our key findings include that rural areas struggle most with traveling long distances to reach services, urban areas are more concerned with traffic, and opinions on electric vehicle (EV) ownership are consistent across the state, with people being likely to consider owning an EV if costs were to decrease. Our interviews identify additional questions that should be evaluated further to help states develop practical and effective policies aimed at reducing GHG emissions in rural areas. We also recommend further in-depth survey research to provide a more complete picture of the potential to shift travel behavior, particularly in rural areas. This research adds to the body of knowledge in a historically understudied population, enabling the research community to better understand and work more closely with small and rural communities to address climate change and achieve deeper GHG emission reductions.</p>
