Dataset: Rainbow color map distorts and misleads research in hydrology – guidance for better visualizations and science communication
<p>The rainbow color map is scientifically incorrect and hinders people with color vision deficiency to view visualizations in a correct way. Due to perceptual non-uniform color gradients within the rainbow color map the data representation is distorted what can lead to misinterpretation of results and flaws in science communication. Here we present the data of a paper survey of 797 scientific publication in the journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences. With in the survey all papers were classified according to color issues. Reassessing science communication for effective farmland biodiversity conservation.
<p>Data set and code for analysing a communication case study about biodiversity conservation and farming in the European decision-making environment. It includes: (1) a literature corpus, consisting of 5988 digital press releases and news texts, covering the period of 2015-2020, from 40 different organizations involved in European farming and food decision-making processes; (2) R code scripts for analysis and graphic representation.</p>

Arctic PASSION is an EU Horizon 2020-funded project which aims to build a coherent Arctic Observing System that is adjusted to societal needs based on a co-design of knowledge.</p> <p>The Arctic PASSION Online Seminar and Dialogue Series is a tool to communicate project’s topics, share ideas, plans and results, and initiate an inclusive and proactive dialogue with people from different groups, backgrounds and career levels. It is targeted to Arctic and Indigenous Youth, Early Career Scientists and other interested audiences. The online seminar is led by Olivia Rempel, a documentary filmmaker and multimedia journalist working at GRID-Arendal, where she does everything from producing, shooting and editing documentaries, to guest teaching a mini science communication course at the Technical University of Denmark. She holds a master’s degree from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, with prior undergraduate work in both journalism and environmental studies. Olivia has had a variety of media jobs, from logistics and communication work at Students on Ice, an educational polar expedition organization, to leading open-source investigations that combat disinformation at the UC Berkeley Human Rights Center and working on documentaries that have been screened at film festivals from Svalbard to Addis Ababa. One Health EJP 4th Dissemination Workshop: Communication, education and training, and science to policy translation. Lessons learnt and legacy of the One Health EJP
<p>The Dissemination Workshops inform on One Health EJP solutions created in response to stakeholder needs, fostering the link between stakeholders and the consortium. Previous Dissemination Workshops targeted policy and decision makers at the national, European, and international level (reports available <a href="https://onehealthejp.eu/outcomes/science-to-policy-translation/reports">here</a>). This workshop instead is dedicated to all those who would like to set up One Health initiatives, encouraging them to learn from the experience of the One Health EJP.</p> <p>The 4th virtual One Health EJP Dissemination Workshop focuses on the interaction with stakeholders to translate science into policy, the impact of the education and training activities, and strategies used for effective dissemination of One Health solutions. Online presentations are given by the members of the One Health EJP <a href="https://onehealthejp.eu/outcomes/science-to-policy-translation/reports">Science to Policy Translation</a> (WP5), <a href="https://onehealthejp.eu/community/education-and-training">Education and Training</a> (WP6), and Communications Teams.</p> <p>Through this workshop, One Health EJP consortium members provide examples of successful strategies and lessons learnt, with the objective of inspiring all those working in this field or setting up new One Health initiatives and increasing the impact of One Health activities in Europe. Novel Science communication – how to build public health knowledge across the social gradient. The Healthy Choices Project (WP5).
<p>Everyday life consists of hundreds of choices of which many may have an impact on our health. The citizens of the modern Nordic welfare states are in general well-educated and thus can be assumed to know what is best for them. Despite this our health care systems face an increasing burden of lifestyle related diseases and there is a difference across the social gradient. Here building public health knowledge through communication is key. The reason for people making unhealthy choices are many and can be that; they do not know what is good for them (lack information) or do not understand (lack understanding) or do not care (carelessness). However it seems likely that it is more complex than that. Maybe they do not receive the information, because gets conveyed through channels that they do not consult or maybe the format of the message does not ‘click’? Could it be, that ‘one media message or channel does not fit all’? </p> <p>Over the last decades there has been an increased focus from both scientists themselves and politicians to scientific and practical field of ‘science communication’. Consequently, various advanced modes of communicating e.g. health issues to the general populations have been developed, and today scholars of Mass Media term this development the ‘scientification’ of media. Furthermore, media and information availability has exploded since the emergence of the Internet in the early 1990s. Research has indicated that social gradient also is a factor affecting a person’s media consumption and habit. </p> <p>In the healthy choices project we aim through novel methods to learn more about these challenges and at the develop new methods of conveying public health knowledge to enable people to make healthier choices across the social gradient. We have so far built a framework for this including a science group, consisting of public health experts, and a communication group consisting of experienced science communicators. The Science group is consulted about risk factors and health endpoints and what to prioritize. Two PhD students will be involved in; 1) assessing media consumption and usage related to health issues across social classes (Low social gradient versus high social gradient) and across the generational gap (young and elderly) and 2) develop and test various media message formats for target groups including considerations of the social gradient. This project will provide new understanding on how to communicate public health messages and reduce social inequalities in health.</p> <p> </p>

Also, all text is in German.</p> <p>Definition of variables for data collection can be found in my finished work "How is reserach performance of the German National Library of Science and Technology, German National Library of Medicine and German National Library of Economics made visible via different communication channels; analysis of information of publication on official social media channels and news on offical webside" (in question to be published on Zenodo).</p> <p>Collected data from following official communication channels: Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, Google +, Youtube, Flickr, LinkedIn, Research-Gate, Slideshare, repository and news on websites. For some channels not all data could be collected. Research period from 01.08.2016 to 01.02.2017 (half a year).</p>

Community survey among science communication practitioners in Germany (2023)
<p>This dataset contains fully anonymized responses to an online survey conducted among German science communication practitioners (N = 103) concerning general science communication (formats, goals, target groups) but also focusing on the specific issue of evaluation in science communication. The survey was in the field from November 13 to December 14, 2023. Sampling was purposive, science communication practitioners were contacted via newsletters, mailing lists, at conferences and with the help of specific social media channels and hashtags. The survey consists of 24 questions, including multiple choice, Likert type questions and open ended questions. The survey is based on a survey from 2019, with partial adjustments in the instruments, to which <a href="../records/4608091">the dataset is also available on Zenodo</a>. It is important to note that the participants of the survey are of the same target group, but it is not the same sample.</p> <p>Questions focused on the survey participants’ conduct of science communication, most frequent formats, goals and target groups but also on their experience with science communication evaluation and their perceptions of it. A detailed description of the variables and the coding can be found in the dataset. Data from: How science communications can help build societal perceptions of invasive alien species and their impacts on the environment
<p>In this study, we investigated the reported beneficial aspects of the invasive alien plant species (IAPS) and argued that, over time and space, the detrimental impacts of the IAS might endanger sustainable livelihoods. The data set contains the following files:</p> <p>Data_S1.xlsx: The file contains details of 154 literature reports. From each paper, we extracted IAPS names (both as reported and standardized), taxonomic information (family and taxon rank), year, country, the scale of observation, and reported beneficial impacts. The beneficial impacts were further categorized into 13 use categories at TDWG (Taxonomic Databases Working Group) Level-1 states (in binary format - 1 indicates the IAPS use and 0 indicates not in use for the individual category).</p> <p>The Metadata_S1.pdf file contains detailed information on preparing literature records for data extraction, the data extraction process, and data organization. </p>
