Organized actors at the biodiversity science-policy-society interface
<p>This database was developed in the context of the Deliverable 2.1 of the BioAgora project 'Developing the Science Service for European Research and Biodiversity Policymaking' (<a href="https://bioagora.eu/)">https://bioagora.eu/)</a>. BioAgora is a collaborative European project funded by the Horizon Europe programme (Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, grant agreement No. 101059438). The project's main outcome is intended to be the development of a Science Service for Biodiversity, the principal EU mechanism to connect research and knowledge on biodiversity to the needs of policy making through a continuous dialogue. The ultimate goal of BioAgora and of the Science Service is to support the implementation of the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, and more broadly the sustainability transition required by the EU Green Deal. The BioAgora project was launched in July 2022 for a duration of 5 years. It gathers a Consortium of 22 partners, from 13 European countries, led the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). Partners represent a diversity of actors coming from academia, public authorities, SMEs, and associations. Views and opinions expressed are those of the authors only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them. </p> <p>In order to develop the database, a thorough desk search was conducted to compile an extensive, albeit not exhaustive, list of organizations operating at the science-policy-society interface in the context of biodiversity and sustainability. In collecting the list, we focused on actors operating at EU level, although we also included particularly relevant international, regional or national organized actors. The desk search built upon the work already developed in the context of two pan-European projects, funded by the Seventh framework programme of the European Community: ‘Developing a Knowledge Network for European Expertise on biodiversity and ecosystem services to inform policy making and economic sectors (KNEU, 2010-2014, grant 265299) and ‘Establishing a European Knowledge and Learning Mechanism to Improve the Policy-Science-Society Interface on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services’ (Eklipse, 2016-2020, grant 690474). The two above-mentioned projects preceded the BioAgora project in that they aimed at understanding and improving the effectiveness of the biodiversity science-policy(-society) interface in Europe. Such projects had thus already compiled extensive databases of relevant organizations in Europe (including national and international actors, in addition to EU level actors), and quantified the relevance of such organizations based on votes cast by project members and based on interviews with key organizations. The database developed through the desk search conducted was further refined with suggestions for relevant organizations provided by BioAgora’s participants and by the representatives of the organizations interviewed during the other steps of the data collection. The data collection processes started in September 2022 and was updated until June 2024. Note that the categories for network types (Columns E-F) are not mutually exclusive. Data of the article Analysis of the self-archiving policies of journals in the highest rank category of the Finnish journal classification system within computer science, physics and electronic engineering
<p>The publication forum level three journals representing the three fields of science of computer science, computer science and electrical engineering were identified by utilizing the MinEdu field search filter while searching for the top-ranked journals from the publication channel search (https://www.tsv.fi/julkaisufoorumi/haku.php?lang=en), which is based on Field of Science, Statistics Finland classification (https://www.stat.fi/meta/luokitukset/tieteenala/001-2010/index_en.html). The data were extracted during august 2017 consists of total of 127 individual journals. It is worth noting that circa 30 journals were classified into more than one fields of sciences under scrutiny. First, the journals were divided into representing gold and hybrid model journals. Second, green open access policies of the identified hybrid journals were analyzed using Laakso’s (2014) publisher policy coding framework. Also publishers of the individual journals were identified and subsequently added to the data.</p> <p>NOTE! The data includes the shortest embargo to either institutional or subject repositories. A Dataset of Science-Policy Collaborations from the International Geneva Ecosystem
<p><strong>This dataset contains data on the characteristics of science-policy collaborations (SPCs) as well as on the perceived value of the Geneva Science-Policy Interface as an intermediary actor facilitating collaborative processes. </strong></p> <p>----</p> <p>In 2020, the Geneva Science-Policy Interface deployed a call for projects explicitly targeting SPCs. The purpose of the call for projects is to motivate policy actors and scientists to join their efforts and propose collaboration projects, select the most promising projects, and provide them with financial and strategic support. Projects are eligible only if both academia and policy actors are represented, and if policy actors are part of the International Geneva ecosystem.</p> <p>The call for projects is a structured and standardised process that allows for the collection of identical data across a sample of SPCs, thus enabling comparative analyses. Data is collected through crowdsourcing, coupling challenge-based data collection and survey data. The Geneva Science-Policy Interface uses the call for projects to collect data on characteristics of SPCs as well as on the perceived value of the GSPI as an intermediary actor facilitating collaborative processes. </p>
Practices and policies of preprint platforms for life and biomedical sciences
<p>Given the increase in the use and profile of preprint servers – and alternative publishing hybrid platforms such as F1000 Research – in the life sciences, it is increasingly important to identify how many such servers and hybrids exist, to describe their scope in terms of the scientific disciplines they cover, and to compare and contrast their characteristics and policies.</p> <p>We surveyed forty-four (44) platforms that host preprints relevant to life and biomedical sciences and that were active online and accepting submissions on 25 June 2019. Information on preprint platform policies, features and practices was collected through online research by the authors and by surveying preprint platform representatives directly. </p> <p>Full data sheets include an additional 5 platforms hosted on OSF Preprints (rows 49-53) to fulfil the wider scope for the ASAPbio project, not in disciplinary scope (biology and medical sciences) for the manuscript with Jamie Kirkham.</p> <p><strong>Tables 1-5: </strong>Data (44 platforms, manuscript) are separated into five main tables of information and a list of preprint platform websites for reference.</p> <p>Table 1: Scope and ownership of each server<br> Table 2: Content-specific characteristics and information relating to submission, journal transfer options, and external discoverability<br> Table 3: Screening, moderation, and permanence of content<br> Table 4: Usage metrics and other features<br> Table 5: Metadata<br> Preprint platform websites</p> <p>Data for each platform are listed as ‘Verified’ in the tables if these tables (V1.0 or V2.0) were seen and approved by a platform representative between January 13 and January 27, 2020.</p> <p><strong>Original online survey:</strong> a blank copy of the original survey form used by online researchers (the authors) and supplied pre-filled (or empty, in some cases) to preprint platform representatives for verification (or completion, in some cases). </p> <p><strong>Final data:</strong> survey data is presented in .txt and .xlsx, as follows:</p> <ul> <li>Row 1: Heading (where field is included in manuscript tables, the heading presented here replaces any heading used in original survey. Open Science: Epistemologies, science policy implementation and digitalisation
<p>This workshop explores Open Science and the promises and challenges for science and society. After briefly covering the definition, history and application of Open Science policies, we discuss why they are relevant and what barriers and concerns there are for implementation. The workshop engages with the challenges of universalising access to knowledge in a world with a plurality of epistemic communities and developmental agendas. Lastly, we discuss the role that digitalisation plays in implementing Open Science policies and what this means for sustainable development.</p>

One Health EJP 4th Dissemination Workshop: Communication, education and training, and science to policy translation. Lessons learnt and legacy of the One Health EJP
<p>The Dissemination Workshops inform on One Health EJP solutions created in response to stakeholder needs, fostering the link between stakeholders and the consortium. Previous Dissemination Workshops targeted policy and decision makers at the national, European, and international level (reports available <a href="https://onehealthejp.eu/outcomes/science-to-policy-translation/reports">here</a>). This workshop instead is dedicated to all those who would like to set up One Health initiatives, encouraging them to learn from the experience of the One Health EJP.</p> <p>The 4th virtual One Health EJP Dissemination Workshop focuses on the interaction with stakeholders to translate science into policy, the impact of the education and training activities, and strategies used for effective dissemination of One Health solutions. Online presentations are given by the members of the One Health EJP <a href="https://onehealthejp.eu/outcomes/science-to-policy-translation/reports">Science to Policy Translation</a> (WP5), <a href="https://onehealthejp.eu/community/education-and-training">Education and Training</a> (WP6), and Communications Teams.</p> <p>Through this workshop, One Health EJP consortium members provide examples of successful strategies and lessons learnt, with the objective of inspiring all those working in this field or setting up new One Health initiatives and increasing the impact of One Health activities in Europe. Open Science Policies in Europe v5, 2020 Dataset (v1.0)
<p>This dataset is a characterisation of European national Open Science policies as of January 2020. The data was analysed for An Analysis of Open Science Policies in Europe v5, 2020 available at http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3689450. </p> <p>The policy used the FAIRsFAIR policy characterisation elements to analyse the policies. The set of characterisation elements were developed in 2019 and used to characterise a selection of data policies from publishers, funding bodies and higher education institutions (HEIs). Both the elements and the resulting dataset are available at http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3550544.</p>
Science to inform policy: linking population dynamics to habitat for a threatened species in Canada
<p>Abstract</p> <p>1. Boreal forests provide numerous ecological services, including the ability to store large amounts of carbon, and are of significance to global biodiversity. Increases in industrial activities in boreal landscapes since the mid-20th century have added to concerns over biodiversity loss and climate change. Boreal forests are home to dwindling populations of boreal caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) in Canada, a species at risk that requires large, undisturbed landscapes for persistence. In 2012, the Canadian government defined critical habitat for boreal caribou by relating calf recruitment to disturbances. Some have questioned whether the recruitment-relationship can be extrapolated beyond the environmental conditions represented in the analysis.</p> <p>2. We examined the effects of human disturbances and fire (alone and in combination) on variation in recruitment and adult female survival using data from 58 study areas in Canada. Top models were used in aspatial scenarios of landscape change to evaluate the efficacy of the critical habitat definition in achieving the recovery objectives for boreal caribou in two contrasting landscapes: Little Smoky, dominated by high levels of human disturbances, and SK1, dominated by fire.</p> <p>3. The top recruitment model suggested the negative effect of fire was 3-4 times smaller than human disturbances. The top adult female survival model included human disturbances only. These results re-affirm that human disturbances are the primary factor contributing to boreal caribou declines.</p> <p>4. Our aspatial scenarios suggested that undisturbed habitat would have to increase to ≥68% for Little Smoky to maintain a self-sustaining population of boreal caribou with some degree of certainty. In contrast, the SK1 population was self-sustaining with 40% undisturbed habitat when fire disturbance predominates, but could become vulnerable with increases in human disturbances (8–9%). 5. Policy implications: Our results suggest that the 65% undisturbed critical habitat designation may serve as a reasonable proxy for achieving boreal caribou recovery in landscapes dominated by human disturbances. However, some populations may be less or more vulnerable, as illustrated by the SK1 scenarios. Continued population monitoring will be essential to assessing the effectiveness of land management strategies developed for boreal caribou recovery, especially with climate change.</p>

Effectiveness of Open Science Policies at ESEC/FSE 2019
<p>This report summarizes how the ESEC/FSE 2019 open science policies came to life and how they resulted in openness for the conference. In particular, I provide how authors of 277 papers provided data at peer review time, and how authors of 74 published papers provided their papers and data openly.
