A Scientific Journal List at Japanese News Articles
<p><strong>Abstract</strong> (our paper)</p> <p>In Japanese scientific news articles, although the research results are described clearly, the article's sources tend to be uncited. This makes it difficult for readers to know the details of the research. In this paper, we address the task of extracting journal names from Japanese scientific news articles. We hypothesize that a journal name is likely to occur in a specific context. To support the hypothesis, we construct a character-based method and extract journal names using this method. This method only uses the left and right context features of journal names. The results of the journal name extractions suggest that the distribution hypothesis plays an important role in identifying the journal names.</p> <p><strong>Data</strong></p> <p>list.txt.gz:<br> The first column is the extraction text by our method (journal name), the second column is the cleaned text, the third column is the news date, and the fourth column is the news URL.</p> <p><strong>Publication</strong></p> <p>This data set is part of our experimental results. Academic publishers purport to be arbiters of knowledge, aiming to publish studied that advance the frontiers of their research domain. Yet the effectiveness of journal editors at identifying novel and important research is generally unknown, in part because of the confidential nature of the editorial and peer-review process. Using questionnaires, we evaluated the degree to which journals are effective arbiters of scientific impact in the domain of Ecology, quantified by three key criteria. First, journals discriminated against low-impact manuscripts: the probability of rejection increased as the number of citations gained by the published paper decreased. Second, journals were more likely to publish high-impact manuscripts (those that obtained citations in 90th percentile for their journal) than run-of-the-mill manuscripts; editors were only 23 and 41% as likely to reject an eventual high-impact paper (pre- versus post-review rejection) compared to a run-of-the-mill paper. Third, editors did occasionally reject papers that went on to be highly cited. Error rates were low, however: only 3.8% of rejected papers gained more citations than the median article in the journal that rejected them, and only 9.2% of rejected manuscripts went on to be high-impact papers in the (generally lower impact factor) publishing journal. The effectiveness of scientific arbitration increased with journal prominence, although some highly prominent journals were no more effective than much less prominent ones. We conclude that the academic publishing system, founded on peer review, appropriately recognises the significance of research contained in manuscripts, as measured by the number of citations that manuscripts obtain after publication, even though some errors are made. We therefore recommend that authors reduce publication delays by choosing journals appropriate to the significance of their research.

Scientific journals with discontinued indexing: the SciELO Brazil Collection = Periódicos científicos com indexação descontinuada: a Coleção SciELO Brasil
<p>Analisa os periódicos científicos com indexação descontinuada da Coleção SciELO Brasil. O <em>corpus</em> constituiu-se de 75 periódicos com indexação descontinuada (coleção não-corrente) desta base. Foram analisados dados dos periódicos e seus editoriais, utilizando-se a técnica de análise de conteúdo. A base registra duas categorias de motivos genéricas: Terminado (40 títulos): tiveram seus títulos alterados, mas permaneceram na base, em sua maioria; e Indexação interrompida (35 títulos): saíram da base, porém os volumes já indexados foram mantidos. Dentre os títulos da categoria Terminado, identificaram-se cinco motivações principais: internacionalização e visibilidade internacional (25 títulos), modernização (2), mudança de entidade editora (2), mudança de entidade editora e internacionalização (1), absorvido por outro periódico (1), motivações não identificadas (9). Dentre os títulos da categoria Indexação interrompida, identificaram-se três principais motivações: internacionalização e visibilidade internacional, parceria com editora comercial internacional (12 títulos), atraso no lançamento de novos fascículos (5), contra a política da SciELO de internacionalização (1), motivações não identificadas (17). Constatou-se que a saída da SciELO coincide com mudanças importantes nas trajetórias da maioria dos periódicos. As mudanças evidenciam capacidade de acompanhar o aumento de exigências tecnológicas e editoriais propostas pela base para manter os padrões de qualidade internacionais da publicação científica. A SciELO é uma importante catalisadora desse processo, e as instituições editoras têm papel fundamental na sustentabilidade. No total, 12 títulos tiveram a indexação descontinuada porque estabeleceram parcerias com editoras comerciais internacionais, abandonando o acesso aberto, fenômeno que merece atenção.</p>

It highlights the significant contributions of priests, pastors, and ministers to the development of folkloristics and ethnography in Europe. The research aims to understand the changing attitudes of the clergy towards local culture and investigate the transition from superstition eradication to the emergence of ethnography and folklore studies.
