Water quality data (River sediment, Nitrogen and Phosphorus loads) for Africa

Output data on African water quality and scripts for preprint - "One third of African rivers fail to meet the 'good ambient water quality' nutrient targets" at https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4829742 . Please check the readme file for data description. The data includes river flow, sediment load, nitrogen and Phosphorus loads for Africa at daily and yearly time scale. This work is currently under review in Ecological Indicators journal.

Spatiotemporal variation in internal phosphorus loading, sediment characteristics, water column chemistry, and thermal mixing in a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA (2019-2020)

The primary aim of the data product is to quantify seasonal and spatial variation in sediment phosphorus fluxes in a temperate reservoir and evaluate mechanisms responsible for instances of elevated sediment phosphorus release. We studied Green Valley Lake, a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA, from 2019 to 2020. We measured sediment phosphorus flux rates and potential explanatory variables at three sites along the longitudinal gradient of the reservoir over six sampling events during winter and summer stratification as well as mixing events in the spring, summer, and fall. Ex situ sediment core incubations were used to measure sediment P release rates under ambient temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions. Explanatory variables measured included sediment phosphorus chemistry, sediment physical characteristics, epilimnetic and hypolimnetic nutrient concentrations, and thermal stratification patterns. These data will be used to identify mechanisms driving hot spots and hot moments of sediment phosphorus release, which will contribute to our understanding of how areas of lakebed and times of the year can disproportionately influence whole-lake water chemistry.

Suspended sediment load and bedload flux from the Glacier d'Otemma proglacial forefield (summers 2020 and 2021)

The Glacier d’Otemma proglacial margin, located in the Swiss Alps at an altitude of about 2450 m a.s.l. (45.93423 N, 7.41160 E), is characterized by a ca. 1 km long by 200 m wide active braided forefield. In this setting we installed two gauging stations for the monitoring of both suspended sediment and bedload transport within the proglacial margin: GS1 at about 350 m from the glacier terminus and GS2 at the forefield outlet.

Monitoring stations were equipped with water pressure sensors (CS451 from Cambell Scientific), turbidity probes (OBS300+ from Cambell Scientific) and geophones (3-components PE-6/B from Sensor Nederland connected to a DiGOS DATA-CUBE type 2 logger). Water discharge were determined following modalities described in Müller and Miesen (2022). Suspended loads were quantified using a conventional turbidity-suspended sediment concentration relationship, while bedload transport was derived seismically using the geophysical Fluvial model inversion (FMI) algorithm developed in Dietze et al. (2018). The dataset covers summers 2020 and 2021.

Further details on data aquisition and post-processing techniques are available in Mancini et al. (2023).

Increased sediment load destabilize algal turf at two different fringing reefs; Evaluating responses across a stress gradient, Moorea, French Polynesia, 2016

Seven reefs in Moorea French Polynesia were examined for sediment and turf characteristics to establish a baseline for naturally occurring proportions of sediment within the turf matrix. At each of the seven sites turf filament heights and sediment depths within the turf matrix were measured using a galvanized mesh measuring device calibrated by 1mm increments. All surveys were conducted between 2-3m in depth between April-May of 2016. We then conducted a two-factor experiment where sediment depth was manipulated at two sites surveyed with strong differences in turf communities (Maharepa and Gump). Our experiment ran for 30 days, with sediment treatments maintained every four days.

Assessing the Risk of Internal Loading of Phosphorus from Drinking Reservoir Sediments

The natural process of lake and reservoir eutrophication through nutrient accumulation within sediments has been accelerated through anthropogenic sources of nitrogen and, especially, phosphorus (P). Stored nutrients can result in significant internal loading (during periods of low sediment redox potential or elevated pH) which may drive poor water quality despite best practice in catchment management. Internal P loading can promote proliferation of cyanobacterial and algal taxa responsible for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) as well as Taste and Odour (T&O) and cyanotoxin events. Here, we investigate the sediment and water column P content of eight reservoirs, by analysing iron-bound (Fe-P), calcium-bound (Ca-P) and labile P fractions.
