Tree seedling abundance mediated by local neighborhood effects and microsite conditions

Tree recruitment across elevational gradients is shaped by myriad factors, including abundance of nearby conspecific adults and abiotic establishment conditions. We measured seedling abundance and overstory basal area for six tree species that dominate northern temperate and montane boreal forests on mountains in the northeastern United States. Data were collected on elevational transects spaced at 100m-intervals of elevation on ten mountains. Associated environmental variables, including vegetation cover, substrate, microclimate, and light environment, were also collected.

Cooperative Alaska Forest Inventory (CAFI): II - Seedling Inventory Data 1994-2024

The CAFI is a repeated forest measurement project established in forest stands throughout interior and southcentral Alaska. The CAFI was launched in 1994 and measurements were done at a 5-year interval until 2015. The project was on hiatus between 2016 and 2019 but picked back up again in 2020 and will continue at a 10-year interval. Total of 205 permanent plots have been established and each plot has been measured up to 6 times. The CAFI is the most extensive forest monitoring program, both in spatial and temporal scale, in interior and southcentral Alaska today. This is the seedling data of the CAFI. Tree Seedlings in CRUI Land Use Project at Harvard Forest 1996

Forests recovering from agricultural legacies differ in many ways that influence tree seed dispersal and seedling establishment patterns. We recorded the number of seedlings (less than 0.5 m tall) of all tree species on a 1 x 1 m resolution across six land use legacy sites (2 plowed, 2 pastured, 2 permanent woodlot) in summer 1996 to test several predictions about seedling abundance, diversity, and dispersion patterns, and their relationships to forest structure, microclimates, and soil resources.

Red Maple Seedling Soil Warming Experiment in Harvard Forest Lath House 2015

Microhabitat environmental conditions are an important filter for seedling establishment, controlling the availability of optimal recruitment sites. Understanding how tree seedlings respond to warming soil temperature is critical for predicting population recruitment in the future hardwood forests of northeastern North America, particularly as environmental conditions and thus optimal microhabitat availabilities change. We examined the effect of 5˚C soil warming during the first growing season on germination, survival, phenology, growth, and stem and root biomass allocation in Acer rubrum (red maple) seedlings. While there was no effect of soil warming on germination or survival, seedlings growing in warmer soils demonstrated significantly accelerated leaf expansion, delayed autumn leaf senescence, and an extended leaf production period. Further, seedlings growing in warmer soils showed larger leaf area, stem and root structures at the end of the first growing season, with no evidence of biomass allocation tradeoffs. Results suggest A. rubrum seedlings can capitalize on soil warming by adjusting leaf phenology and leaf production, resulting in a longer period of carbon uptake and leading to higher overall biomass. The absence of growth allocation tradeoffs suggests A. rubrum will respond positively to increasing soil temperatures in northeastern forests, at least in the early life stages.

Seed Dispersal and Seedling Establishment of Sarracenia Purpurea at Hawley Bog, MA 1998-1999

Plant ecologists continue to grapple with Reid’s paradox, the observation that dispersal distances of most herbs and trees are too limited to account for their recolonization of northern latitudes following glacial recession. As global climate changes and natural habitats become increasingly fragmented, understanding patterns of seed dispersal and the potential for long-distance colonization takes on new importance. We studied the dispersal and establishment of the northern pitcher plant Sarracenia purpurea, which grows commonly in isolated bogs throughout Canada and eastern North America. Median dispersal distance of S. purpurea is only 5 cm, which is insufficient to explain its occurrence throughout formerly glaciated regions of North America. Establishment probability of seeds in the field is approximately 5%, and juveniles are normally found clustered around adult plants. The large-scale population genetic structure of this species can be accounted for by rare long-distance dispersal events, but its predictable occurrence in isolated habitats requires additional explanation. Reid’s paradox remains an open question, and predicting long-range colonization into fragmented habitats by species with limited dispersal ability is a novel challenge.

Soil Microbial Community Effects on Quercus Rubra Seedling Survival at Harvard Forest 2016-2017

Feedbacks between plants and their soil microbial communities often drive negative density dependence in tropical forests, but their importance for tree demographics in temperate forests remains unclear. Additionally, the relative contribution of intraspecific seedling competition and soil pathogens to density-dependent patterns has rarely been assessed. We assessed how the soil microbial community influenced Quercus rubra seedling survival by growing seedlings in a greenhouse inoculated with soil collected from beneath conspecific and heterospecific mature trees. We found that seedlings grown with soil from beneath conspecific adults had a higher mortality rate than seedlings grown with soil from beneath heterospecific adults; therefore adult plant-soil feedbacks decrease seedling survival in Q. rubra.

Seedling Survey of the CTFS-ForestGEO Plot at Harvard Forest since 2017

Within a species, trees can vary in size by many orders of magnitude, from tiny seedlings to multi-ton adults. This intraspecific variation in tree size has important consequences for forest structure and function, as it governs patterns of tree abundance, growth rate and energy flux. Recent theoretical models make predictions about size-energy patterns of forests but available evidence indicates deviation from predictions for the smallest and largest trees. The goal of this project is to examine seedling and canopy tree demography at Harvard Forest and explore their theoretical implications. We will link early remote sensing data from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) with boots-on-the-ground measurements at Harvard Forest plots. We will also fit demographic models of the trees of this forest in transition.

Seedling composition, growth, and dynamics in tropical rain forest, La Selva, Costa Rica (1983-1996)

Recruitment, growth, and survivorship of the regeneration stages of trees and lianas were studied in old-growth tropical rain forest at La Selva Biological Station of the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS), near Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, Heredia Province, in the Caribbean lowlands of Costa Rica. A total of 48 permanent seedling transects each measuring 10 m x 0.5 m were established at random locations within three La Selva permanent forest inventory plots. The forest plots occupy contrasting landforms: Plot 1 (4.4 ha), old alluvial terrace; Plot 2 (4.0 ha), swamp forest and low hills; and Plot 3 (4.0 ha), steeply dissected terrain with residual volcanic soils. Seedling locations are georeferenced within the grid system of the permanent forest inventory plots, facilitating spatial analysis of seedling populations with respect to adult cohorts. Beginning in June 1983, all seedlings ≤ 0.5 m in height belonging to tree and liana species capable of reaching 10 cm diameter at breast height (dbh) at maturity were tagged, identified to species or morphospecies, mapped to the nearest cm, and measured in height to the nearest cm. Over a period of 18 months, a total of 6403 seedlings belonging to 167 species were tagged. Monitoring and re-measurement of all tagged individuals continued through November 1996. Data include 17 census dates over a period of 13.5 years. At the time of the final census, only 97 individuals (1.52% of the tagged seedlings) were still alive, representing 43 species (25.7% of the initial number). The largest surviving seedling had grown in height from 4 cm to 13 meters during the study period. This dataset on the regeneration stages in old-growth tropical rain forest in the La Selva permanent inventory plots forms a complement to the studies of long-term growth and demography of these species and assemblages at adult stages within the plots. Bonanza Creek LTER: Shrub, Seedling and Sapling Density from 1975 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest near Fairbanks, Alaska

This study is a survey of the density of tall shrubs, saplings, and seedlings at Bonanza Creek LTER Control Plots. Densities have been measured at some sites since 1975 while others began in the mid 1980's. In 2006 methodology was changed in attempt to better capture the spatial variability of shrub and tree species within the research sites. The current method, presented here, uses a 2 meter wide transect along two site boundaries covering 220m2. All seedlings, saplings, and tall shrubs >1m (regardless of species) are counted by species and size class along the transect. The previous method used 4m2 circular plots at 20 points on a 10mx10m grid within the control plot for an area of 80m2. The circular method measured all seedlings, saplings, and a certain set of "tall shrubs", regardless of height. The height requirement creates an issue when comparing the old and new methods for early successional stands. For Alnus and Salix this is likely only a problem in the FP0 sites as they are the only sites with a high density of shrubs shorter than 1m. Shrub community changes at these early successional sites should be analyzed using percent cover data. At the later successional sites most Alnus and Salix shrubs are greater than 1m so the transect method likely does not underrepresent density. Mycorrhizal fungal communities identified from seedlings planted in the Taylor, Dalton, and Boundary fire complexes which burned in 2004

This dataset contains the operational taxonomic unit table and taxonomic assignments for fungi that were associated with the roots of seedlings planted into the 2004 burn sites. There were 458 seedlings from 22 of the 32 established intensive sites (Johnstone and Hollingsworth 2019) consistenting of black spruce, white spruce, aspen, and lodgepole pine.

Grass seedling survival and microhabitat vegetation cover among herbivore exclusion treatments across grassland-shrubland ecotones at 3 sites, 2022 and 2023

The aim of this study is to reveal how mammalian herbivores differentially affect the survival of grass seedlings depending on herbivore taxa (cattle, oryx, lagomorphs, rodents) and microhabitat vegetation structure surrounding grass seedlings. This dataset includes data tracking the survival of grass seedlings among herbivore exclusion treatments across grassland, ecotone, and shrubland habitats. Seedling survival trials were established at 3 spatial blocks associated with the Ecotone Study: JER Pastures 9 and 12, and CDRRC Pasture 3. Survival trials were conducted on Pasture 12 in 2022, and on Pastures 3, 9, and 12 in 2023. Each spatial block contained 3 sites (grassland, ecotone, shrubland) that were further subdivided into 5 replicate plots (n = 45 plots). Two trays (1 control open to all herbivores, 1 caged allowing only rodent access) of 25 seedlings each were buried at ground level at each plot and their condition (i.e., alive & undamaged, alive & herbivore damaged, senesced or absent via herbivory, senesced due to environmental stress, resprouted following herbivory, unknown fate, or herbivory following senescence) recorded every 3 days for a total of 15 days. Microhabitat vegetation cover surrounding the seedling trays was collected using ocular estimates of cover across plant functional types (e.g., perennial grasses, forbs, sub-shrubs, shrubs, etc.) within 1 square-meter PVC quadrats placed on both the east and west face of seedling trays established in the field. Maximum height of vegetative (non-reproductive) plant tissue of each functional type was additionally recorded to gauge the level of grass seedling concealment.

Light-regulated gene expression and alternative splicing data from rice seedlings.

<p>This data contains analyzed data from the experiment conducted on rice seedlings under dark and light conditions. Seeds of rice (Oryza sativa spp. japonica cv. Nipponbare) were sown in the dark and germinated on day 2 and continued to grow in the dark for another 6 days. 3 biological replicates of the dark-grown etiolated shoots were harvested on day 8 after sowing. The remaining dark-grown seedlings were exposed to continuous white light at 120 mol/m2/sec for 48 hours or another 2 days (Days 9 and 10 after sowing). Three replicates of the light-treated green-colored seedling samples were harvested at the end of day 10. Harvested samples were frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at -80C until further processing.</p>

Percent cover of under- and mid-story vegetation and seedling counts in the Future of Oak Forests project at Black Rock Forest, Cornwall, NY.

Black Rock Forest established a series of 12, 0.56 ha plots in 2005 to assess impacts of the loss of tree in the genus Quercus on the forest ecosystem (entitled the Future of Oak Forests experiment). Three trunk girdling treatments, with control plots were instituted in 2008. Each plot also contained an ~10m by ~15m deer exclosure to assess the impact of herbivory post-disturbance. In 2006 and 2008, before exclosures were erected, pre-treatment surveys were conducted in all unexclosed (n=120) quadrats. Surveys of all 240 understory quadrats were conducted annually in late summer (August to September) from 2009 to 2018 and then again in 2021. At each quadrat, trained observers identified all vascular plants to species and assigned each species a percent cover value. The percent cover of moss was also recorded but moss species were not identified. Counts of tree seedlings and some woody shrubs were also recorded in addition to percent cover values. Seedlings were considered saplings, and therefore not counted, once they reached 1.3 m tall (breast height).

Survey of Alarka Laurel and Rich Mountain Red Spruce (Picea rubens) Overstory, Saplings, and Seedlings in western North Carolina in 2007, 2022, and 2023

In the southern Appalachians, disjunct red spruce (Picea rubens) populations persist at low latitudes at elevations above 1,370 m. However, research on the condition of these disjunct red spruce populations is limited. This study compared baseline health, recruitment, and stand dynamics of two of the southern-most red spruce populations in eastern North America, the Rich Mountain and Alarka Laurel spruce bog basins in Nantahala National Forest, North Carolina. We collected data on overstory (DBH>10 cm), saplings (DBH< 10 cm, and height >2 m), and seedlings (height<10 cm) from Alarka Laurel in 2007 and 2022. Data from Rich Mountain were collected in 2023. We used 10-m wide belt transects noted the species and diameter at breast height (DBH) of overstory species, counted and noted the DBH of red spruce saplings, and counted and noted the height of red spruce seedlings. In 2022 and 2023, we gave a health score from 0-3 for all three categories of trees (overstory, saplings, and seedlings), with 0 being dead and 3 being healthy with little to no signs of disease or stress. Overall, both stands did not yet appear affected by climatic warming, despite the southern latitude and relatively low elevation. Our findings reveal that red spruce is the dominant overstory species, comprising an average of 25.6% of all measured overstory trees, with seedlings and saplings making up 72.8% of the red spruce population, indicating sustainable recruitment. Red spruce basal area declined by 13.9% from 2007 to 2022 in Alarka Laurel, with a concomitant increase in some hardwood species. However, both Alarka Laurel and Rich Mountain showed high levels of sapling and seedling recruitment. Overall, red spruce trees are healthy, particularly seedlings, representing the healthiest age category. Our results suggest the stands are relatively stable and provide essential baseline data for monitoring of forest conditions in the context of intensifying climate change. Alaska 2004 Burns: Growth and survival of tree seedlings in post-fire experimental transplant study across 39 sites

This dataset contains measurements of tree seedlings growth for an experimental transplant study started in 2005 at sites that burned in 2004 in interior Alaska. Records are from a set of 39 intensive study sites that were formerly dominated by black spruce along the Steese, Taylor, and Dalton highways. Seedlings were monitored for 10 years, with detailed measurements in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013, and 2015. Aboveground biomass was harvested in 2011.

Overwintering Fires from 2009-2010 Burns near Fairbanks, Alaska: Post-fire Seedling Recruitment Collected 2023

This dataset contains data from adjacent overwintering and single-season burn sites. For the overwintering fires, we targeted locations that had burned in the summers of 2009, smouldered through the winter months, and reignited in 2010. Adjacent to these overwintering sites, we identified single-season burn sites from within portions of the 2009 fires that were unaffected by overwintering. A total of seven overwintering fire sites and four single-season fire sites were sampled. Within each site, three plots were established. Data inlcudes within plot measurments of post-fire seedling composition and density, residual SOL, burn depth estimated by black spruce adventitious roots, thaw depth, and pre-fire tree species composition and estimates of combustion. This is one of three packages from this project; this one contains the seedling recruitment data.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Oak seedling demography, 2011 - ongoing

This data set was built from a larger data set of marked northern red oak seedlings surveyed from 2011-2023. In this data set, only seedlings marked in their year of germination with full environmental and seedlings measures were kept (N = 937). The data set was built for an accelerated failure time model of seedling survival that found year of germination, seedling density, shrub cover and elevation to have the largest effect on survival time. The status of the seedling acorn (attached or missing) was also important. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
