Alaska 2020 update for USGS G19AP00019: Initial Development of Alaska Community Seismic Velocity Models

Seismic velocity model AKEP2020 uses earthquake travel-time and ambient noise group velocity data to update Eberhart-Phillips et al. (2006: AKEP2006)

The model is provided in a table: vlAKEP2020xyzltlnSFDRE.tbl.txt

and in the simul output from velocity inversion: vlAKEP2020.out.txt

Map plots of Vp and Vp/Vs are also provided, with lines denoting limits of adequate data.

Velocity Inversion Procedure Notes for AKEP2020 model

The 2006 AK model and the 2020 updated model both use Transverse Mercator coordinate transformation with central meridian= -150 and counterclockwise rotation of 162.1. Earth-flattening transformation is used for velocity during ray-tracing. The depths are relative to sea-level and station elevations are used. For the group-velocity data, the surface is taken as the 30-km median filtered topography.

Velocity with the 3D gridded model is defined by linearly interpolating between nodes.

A gradational inversion approach was used with earthquake and shot travel-time data, and group velocity observations for periods 6-15 s. The table provides, from the computed resolution matrix, the diagonal resolution element (DRE), and the spread function (SF), for each Vp and Vp/Vs node.

This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. Geological Survey under Grant No. G19AP00019. Note that an earlier model, AKEP2018, from the first year of this funded project was reported in Eberhart-Phillips et al. (2019).

The views and conclusions contained in this document are those of the authors and should not be interpreted as representing the opinions or policies of the U.S. Geological Survey. New Zealand Wide model 2.3 seismic velocity model for New Zealand

19-Sept-2024 Full uncompressed versions of the New Zealand Wide 2.3 velocity, Qs and Qp model Tables can be obtained from zenodo.org/records/13799996

New Zealand Wide velocity model 2.3 has seismic velocity for New Zealand developed from local-earthquake tomography studies. It incorporates results from the southern South Island, published in Tectonics, using joint inversion of travel times and ambient noise derived group velocities (Eberhart-Phillips, et al., 2021, 2022). The results from that study have been interpolated and merged into the previous New Zealand Wide model 2.2 (zenodo.org/record/3779523)

The model is provided in tables, where the Spread Function (SF) shows the resolution, such that where SF<4, there is little information.

vlnzw2p3dnxyzltln.tbl.txt

There is also a simul format velocity file.

vlnzw2p3.mod.txt

And map plots with white lines denoting limits of adequate data, from the 2022 Southern South Island paper, and also for all New Zealand.

Figs_SouthernSI_Tect.pdf

mapvpvpvsnzw2p3.pdf

Velocities any point within the 3D gridded models are defined by linearly interpolating between nodes.

The models use Transverse Mercator coordinate transformation with a central meridian= 173, and counterclockwise rotation of 140. Earth-flattening transformation is used for velocity during ray-tracing. The depths are relative to sea-level. Density has been included in the velocity table, by using an empirical relationship (Gardner et al., 1974; Hill, 1978).

Alaska 2018 update for USGSG18AP00017: Initial Development of Alaska Community Seismic Velocity Models

Seismic velocity model AKEP2018 uses earthquake travel-time and ambient noise group velocity data to update the Alaska 3-D model of Eberhart-Phillips et al. (2006: AK2006), for the USGS project on developing Alaska Community Seismic Velocity Models . This 2018 model will be expanded with additional data in 2019 in the second year of the funded project.

Velocity within the 3D gridded model is defined by linearly interpolating between nodes. The inversion solved for Vp and Vp/Vs. The model is provided in a table: vlAKEP2018xyzltlnSFDRE.tbl.txt, with velocity at inversion nodes in cartesian and latitude-longitude coordinates. The table provides, from the computed resolution matrix, the diagonal resolution element (DRE), and the spread function (SF), for each Vp and Vp/Vs node.

This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. Geological Survey under Grant No. G18AP00017.

The views and conclusions contained in this document are those of the authors and should not be interpreted as representing the opinions or policies of the U.S. Geological Survey. Southern South Island, New Zealand, seismic observations and velocity model for Tectonics 2021TC007006

This archive has data and results from the Tectonics paper, “The influence of basement terranes on tectonic deformation: joint earthquake travel-time and ambient noise tomography of the southern South Island, New Zealand” (Eberhart-Phillips et al., 2022; doi:10.1029/2021TC007006). That work incorporated earthquake observations from the 2014-2015 Otago temporary broadband network. Group velocity observations are in ‘groupvel_obs_otaf_T5_T9.vgsw’. We used earthquakes observed on the COSA temporary network. The Otago-COSA travel-times and hypocenters are in ‘tt_archive.tar’. The Otago earthquakes were evaluated within Seiscomp. Those observation files, which include polarity, are in ‘polarity_bulletin.tar’. We did not use the polarities in the Tectonics paper, but we archive them here for completeness. The waveform data will be available from IRIS.

The southern South Island 3-D velocity model is provided in the table ‘vlotf30xyzltlnDWSSF.mod’, with DWS (derivative weight sum) describing the distribution of data, and SF (spread function) describing the resolution averaging. Later on, this will be merged into the New Zealand wide velocity model version 2.3, which will be placed on Zenodo.

The Repository for the Manuscript "Temperature and Precipitation Dominate Seasonal Variations in Seismic Velocity and Attenuation in Deserts"

Overview

This dataset contains the essential code and data for calculating the Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR), analyzing vehicle-generated seismic events, retrieving Q-values, and comparing them with meteorological data. It also includes waveform data from 20 seismic events.

The seismic data originate from a temporary broadband seismic array deployed in the Tarim Basin, from July 2017 to October 2019 (Zuo et al., 2022). This dataset focuses on three seismic stations: T12, T52, and T23. Stations T12 and T23 recorded data from July 2017 to October 2019, while station T52 recorded from November 2018 to October 2019.

Code

The dataset includes Python scripts for calculating HVSR and retrieving Q-values. The HVSR calculation follows Li et al., (2023), while forward modeling is based on Antonio García-Jerez et al., (2016).

The codes for Q-value estimation are stored in ‘Retrieving Q-value’ folder. The Q-value estimation process, demonstrated for station T12 in Jupyter Notebook, involves extracting single vehicle signals from continuous data, time-frequency spectrogram calculations, two-dimensional correlation coefficient of their time-frequency amplitude calculations, using hierarchical clustering algorithm to classify vehicle signals, vehicle speed estimation, and performing Q-value inversion.

Dataset

HVSR variations over time for three stations are calculated from continuous seismic recordings and are stored in the ‘HVSR’ folder under each station directory.

Time-frequency spectrograms for Q-value estimation are stored in the ‘Spectrogram’ folder, with filenames indicating the record time of each vehicle signal. The Q-value is inverted using these signals, and for stability, we stacked every 100 individual results, which are stored in the 'Q-values' folder under the corresponding station name folder. Due to interference from wind and other sources, Q-value inversion using vehicle signals was unreliable for T23, so Q-values are only provided for T12 and T52.

Meteorological data (temperature and soil water content) are stored in the ‘temperature’ and ‘soil water content’ folders under each station directory.

Seismic event waveforms for 20 selected strong earthquakes are stored in the ‘events’ folder, with filenames indicating the start and end times of the events.
