A Triadic Model of Semiotic Media Practices

(EN)

The triadic model of semiotic media practices (zeichenhafte Medienpraktiken) illustrates the interplay of media, signs, and practices as well as the relation between mediatised signs and practices established in semioses. Semiotic media practices are fundamentally indexical and reflexive, as they always depend on the situations from which they emerge and the contexts to which they refer. At the centre are processes of sign usage, i. e., semioses, which are practically accomplished through mediatised signs in which medium and sign merge. A mediatised sign is semanticised substance. Practices and mediatised signs are in a constitutive interrelation. Mediatised signs index practices: they display the practices within which they are processed. Practices induce mediatised signs: they make practice-specific sign processes expectable and necessary and are bound to them. Via mediatised signs, practices become medial and meaningful. Semiotic media practices bring forth social praxis. In their interplay, practices, media, and signs constitute the connections of sociality, mediality, and semioticity. Non-semiotic media practices are only relevant for social reality in conjunction with semiotic media practices.

(DE)
