A ferrofluid-based sensor to measure bottom shear stresses under currents and waves. Data set: Ferrofluids_Opt_2018_DiDonFranceesco
<p>The experimental calibration of the system for measuring bed shear stresses under currents was carried out at the Hydraulic Laboratory of the University of Catania.</p> <p>In this experimental campaign the magnet S0805 and S0808 were used. The tests were conducted for several bottom configurations (smooth bottom; thin sand d50=0.24 mm; coarse sand d50=0.56 mm; and mixed sand 70% thin sand and 30% coarse sand). The goals of such tests were: to study the effects of the type of magnets and to carry out a preliminary analysis the ferrofluid behavior over sandy bottom.</p>

<p>The experimental calibration of the system for measuring bed shear stresses under currents was carried out at the Hydraulic Laboratory of the University of Catania.</p> <p>In this experimental campaign magnet type S0805 and a number of magnets equal to 2,3 and 4 were used. The tests were conducted both over a fixed bed (Perspex©) and in the presence of mobile beds. The goals of such tests were: to study of the velocity profiles for some fixed and mobile bottoms; to study the effects of the number of magnets on the ferrofluid behavior; preliminary analysis of the bed shear stress over sandy bottom.</p>
Shear Stress, Biomass, Bulk Density, Organic Matter on the Bank of the York River, VA 2018
This dataset includes data used to assess marsh vulnerability to sea-level rise by quantifying marsh erodibility along a salinity gradient in the York River in southeastern Virginia. We measured the erodibility of marshes along a salinity gradient in the York River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay (Virginia, USA). We chose five marshes along the York River salinity gradient for this study. Salinity decreases upriver from 18 ppt at the Goodwin Islands to 0 ppt at the Pamunkey Indian Reservation. Within these overall sites, we chose sampling locations along tidal creeks 5-10 m wide, with marsh widths beyond 20 meters and consistent elevations across all study sites. We collected samples from both the tidal channel marsh edge and from the marsh interior. Edge sites were located between the tidal channel and any levee (1 m from edge), while interior sites were located at a measured distance of 10-12 m away from the edge site. All field work was done in July-August 2018, except for the collection of cores for belowground biomass at the Sweet Hall Marsh and Pamunkey Indian Reservation marsh edge sites (September 2018) and elevation profiles of the Pamunkey Indian Reservation (March 2020). Data tables are: 1) shear strength, 2) aboveground biomass, 3) belowground biomass, 4) LOI (loss on ignition), 5) kinematic GPS data along the transects and 6) averages for each station of variables in tables 1, 3 and 4.

Imaging elastodynamic and hydraulic properties of in-situ fractured rock: An experimental investigation exploring effects of dynamic stressing and shearing
<p>We describe laboratory experiments to elucidate the relationship between nonlinear elasticity and permeability evolution in fractured media subjected to local stress perturbations. This study is part of an effort to image fluid pathways and fracture properties using active-source acoustic monitoring during fluid injection and shear of rough fractures. Experiments were conducted with L-shaped samples of Westerly granite fractured in-situ under tri-axial conditions with deionized water subsequently circulated through the resulting fractures. After in-situ fracturing, we separately imposed oscillations of the applied normal stress and pore pressure with amplitudes ranging from 0.2 to 1 MPa and frequencies from 0.1 to 40 Hz. During these dynamic perturbations an array of piezoelectric transducers continuously transmitted ultrasonic pulses across the fracture to monitor the evolving elastic response. We interpret the resulting evolution of elastic wave properties in the context of elastic nonlinearity and relate the estimated nonlinearity parameters to the relative change in permeability of the fractured media. Fracture roughness is then altered in-situ by shearing, with the generation of breccia and wear products. We document the evolution of permeability and fracture contact stiffness as a function of dynamic stressing and shear offset and discuss our findings in relation to fractures in Earth's crust.</p>

Seasonal particle responses to near-bed shear stress in a shallow, wave- and current-driven environment
<p>Novel analysis of in-situ acoustic and optical data collected in a shallow, wave- and current-driven environment enabled determination of: (1) particle characteristics that were most affected by near-bed physical forcing over seasonal scales, and (2) characteristic shear stress, tchar, at which the rate of change to particle characteristics was most pronounced. Near-bed forcing and particle responses varied by season. Results indicated that moderate tchar values of 0.125 Pa drove changes in particle composition during summer. In winter, particle concentration effects were most affected at tchar of 0.05 Pa, suggesting dominance of fluff layer resuspension. Changes to particle size were most relevant during a biologically productive springtime period, with initiation of particle disaggregation occurring most commonly at tchar of 0.25 Pa. These results suggest that it may be more important to parameterize tchar, as opposed to critical shear stress for erosion, for sediment transport models.</p>
