PSC01 Exploring effects on stream ecosystem properties by two size classes of prairie stream cyprinids

Losses in freshwater fish diversity might produce a loss in important ecological services provided by fishes in particular habitats. An important gap in our understanding of ecosystem services by fishes is the influence of individuals from different size classes, which is predicted based on known ontogenetic shifts in habitat and diet. I used twenty experimental stream mesocosms located on Konza Prairie Biological Station (KPBS), KS, USA to assess the influence of fish size on ecosystem properties. Mesocosms included two macrohabitats: one riffle upstream from one pool filled with consistent pebble and gravel substrate. There were four experimental and one control treatment, each replicated four times (N = 20). I used two size classes of Central Stonerollers (Campostoma anomalum) and Southern Redbelly Dace (Chrosomus erythrogaster). Five ecosystem properties were assessed: algal filament length (cm), benthic chlorophyll a (µg/cm2), benthic organic matter (g/m2), macroinvertebrate biomass (g/m2), and stream metabolism (g O2/m2/day1). Size structure of fish populations affected some, but not all, ecosystem properties and these effects were dependent upon species identity. Size structure of both species had effects on algal filament lengths where stonerollers of both size classes reduced algal filaments, but only small redbelly dace kept filaments short. A better understanding of the relationship between these prairie stream minnows and their small stream habitats could be useful to both predict changes in stream properties if species are lost or size structure shifts, and to redbelly dace populations, a Species In Need of Conservation.

Datasets from the study Peer learning as a key component of an Integrated Teaching Method in large size classes

<p>The theory and research on learning in higher education are pointing out that active methods are able to improve learners&rsquo; performance more than passive ones and to trigger situated and deep learning. However, some factors prevent their spread and trust amongst university instructors, like their complex logistics in large size lectures. Indeed, in academic crowded classes these interactive-engagement methodologies are sporadically employed and seem to be rarely successful. In this context, in the academic years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 we carried out a quasi-experiment at Politecnico di Milano aimed at investigating the effectiveness of the integration of peer learning activities, strengthened by the use of technology, into traditional Physics lectures as a teaching method in large size classes. Data related to both an experimental and a control group were gathered and analysed through descriptive and inferential statistics; Shapiro-Wilk, Levene, Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed-rank and Kruskal-Wallis tests were employed. Our combined strategy appears to be effective with relation to learning Physics and more successful than traditional courses centred on academic lectures, regardless of the difficulty of the issues investigated. Time series of phytoplankton size classes at LTER-MC in the Gulf of Naples (1984-2015)

<p>This database contains the abundance data of four phytoplankton size classes from the Long Term Ecological Research Station MareChiara (st. LTER-MC, 40&deg;48.5&rsquo; N, 14&deg;15&rsquo; E) over the years 1984-2015. Samples were collected with a Niskin bottle in surface waters, fixed with neutralized formaldehyde (0.8-1.6% final concentration), and counted at the inverted microscope. Linear measurements were taken on a number of phytoplankton specimens for each species and biovolumes were calculated based on species-specific shapes. The species were grouped in size classes (&lt; 5 &micro;m, 5-15 &micro;m, 15-30 &micro;m, &gt; 30 &micro;m) based on their equivalent spherical diameter (ESD).</p>

Correlation between body size and longevity: new analysis and data covering six taxonomic classes of vertebrates

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Large bodied species are known to live longer than small bodied species. However, it is less clear whether the positive correlation varies across taxa. In this short communication, we combine data entries from literature and databases on body mass and maximum life span for 3722 species covering </span><span>taxonomic Classes <span><em><span>Chondrichthyes</span></em><span>, <em>Teleostei, Amphibia</em>, <em>Reptilia, Aves</em><span>, and</span><em> Mammalia</em>.</span> </span>We then analyze the log(maximum life span) – log(body mass) relationship using generalized linear model with nested random intercepts and slopes for Class/Order/Family. Our analyses generally demonstrate the positive longevity – body mass relationship but also reveal that slopes and intercepts differ slightly among all Classes except <em>Reptilia</em> and <em>Amphibia</em>. Highest slopes can be found in Classes <em>Aves</em> and <em>Chondrichthyes</em>. Differences between the smallest and largest Family-level slopes was more than threefold. While these preliminary analyses provide a brief overview of body size – longevity relationships across taxa, the dataset collated in the present study could serve as a start point for in-depth phylogenetic analyses to uncover complex pathways through which body size and its correlates might have evolved. </span></p>

Data for: Tree species size class patterns portend compositional shifts and low resilience in managed northern hardwood forests

<p><span>Declining biodiversity is a global challenge to sustainability and resilience of ecosystems facing multiple novel stressors, including climate change and invasive pests-pathogens. Northern hardwood forests (NHF) of the Great Lakes region have experienced declines in canopy tree diversity since European colonization, with current tree regeneration patterns in some areas suggesting perpetuation of this trend. However, regional (10<sup>6</sup> ha) patterns and possible causes are underexplored. To address this information gap, we used data from 141 managed NHF stands, Michigan, USA to examine diversity indices across tree size classes (seedling, sapling, and canopy); stand-level drivers of regeneration (seedling and sapling) diversity and individual species density; and patterns among species in relative abundances across size classes. Diversity was similar across size classes (mean asymptotic species richness of 6 – 7 species and &lt;3 effective common species); however, some species contributing to sapling diversity are unlikely to contribute to future canopy diversity (<em>Fraxinus americana </em>and<em> Fagus grandifolia</em>, insect/pathogen limited; <em>Ostrya virginiana, </em>small maximum size). For the 11 most common species, conspecific canopy density (+, significant for 11 seedlings, 11 species) and stand basal area (-, saplings, 3 species) were the most consistent drivers of density, with less consistent effects for deer use, site quality, and substrate. Patterns of relative density by size class among the 18 species present on &gt; 10 % of sites were consistent with theories of establishment or recruitment limitations due to deer browsing, deep shade, or limited suitable substrate. For seven species (including e.g., <em>Tsuga canadensis</em><span>, </span><em>Betula alleghaniensis, Populus grandidentata, Tilia americana</em><span>)</span>, relative abundance was lowest in the seedling layer and increased in larger size classes, <span>suggesting seedling establishment substrate and/or early shade mortality limitations. For two species (<em>Acer saccharum, Quercus rubra.</em>), patterns of reduced sapling relative abundance compared to seedling or canopy strata suggests a sapling recruitment bottleneck from deer browsing/shade, whereas six species (e.g., <em>F</em></span><em>agu<span>s grandifolia, Ostrya virginiana, Pinus strobus</span></em><span>) had highest relative density for saplings suggesting sapling to canopy recruitment limitations. Lastly, seedlings were relatively most abundant for </span><em>Acer rubrum </em><span>and </span><em>Prunus </em><span>spp., indicating disproportionally high seedling establishment, if not sapling or canopy recruitment, and for F. Americana, consistent with recent pest-related canopy mortality. Our results</span> suggest sustained low diversity and shifting composition are being driven by limited local seed availability, deep shading, limited seedling establishment substrate, and abundant deer. Management aimed at overcoming these specific limitations may be necessary to promote future NHF resilience.</span></p>

Song parameters, repertoire size and song sharing within and across age classes in the saffron finch

<p>Birds sing mostly to attract partners or to defend territories or resources. In relation to the first function, song can vary with age if older experienced males signal their quality through their vocal output. Regarding the second function, song can also vary with age if singing behavior helps mediate social interactions through repertoire sharing with neighbors. Here, we investigate whether song parameters change with age, and in which direction, in saffron finches Sicalis flaveola pelzelni, obligate secondary cavity nesters which produce elaborate melodious songs and show delayed plumage maturation. Cross-sectional comparisons revealed that second year (SY) males sing shorter syllables, and shorter and less versatile songs than older after second year males (ASY), as expected if the latter are more experienced singers. Longitudinal comparisons, which better depict age-related changes, showed that as birds age one year, song length and repertoire size do not change significantly, syllable duration shortens and, as expected for experienced singers, song versatility increases. Correlations between repertoire distance and nesting distance suggest that both SY and ASY males might be adjusting their repertoires to those of ASY neighbors; the former pattern conforms to the expectations if young birds try to emulate the songs of more experienced birds, while the latter is expected if song sharing helps de-escalating antagonistic social interactions amongst males. This research, which provides the first description of song parameters in young second year saffron finches, expands our knowledge of song variation across age classes in songbirds.</p>

Data from: Nonrandom, diversifying processes are disproportionately strong in the smallest size classes of a tropical forest

A variety of ecological processes influence diversity and species composition in natural communities. Most of these processes, whether abiotic or biotic, differentially filter individuals from birth to death, thereby altering species' relative abundances. Nonrandom outcomes could accrue throughout ontogeny, or the processes that generate them could be particularly influential at certain stages. One long-standing paradigm in tropical forest ecology holds that patterns of relative abundance among mature trees are largely set by processes operating at the earliest life cycle stages. Several studies confirm filtering processes at some stages, but the longevity of large trees makes a rigorous comparison across size classes impossible without long-term demographic data. Here, we use one of the world's longest-running, plot-based forest dynamics projects to compare nonrandom outcomes across stage classes. We considered a cohort of 7,977 individuals in 186 species that were alive in 1971 and monitored in 13 mortality censuses over 42 y to 2013. Nonrandom mortality with respect to species identity occurred more often in the smaller rather than the larger size classes. Furthermore, observed nonrandom mortality in the smaller size classes had a diversifying influence; species richness of the survivors was up to 30% greater than expected in the two smallest size classes, but not greater than expected in the larger size classes. These results highlight the importance of early life cycle stages in tropical forest community dynamics. More generally, they add to an accumulating body of evidence for the importance of early-stage nonrandom outcomes to community structure in marine and terrestrial environments.

Annual mortality and growth index for 17 tree species across entire size classes in the Ogawa Forest Reserve, an old-growth deciduous forest, central Japan

<p><span>We estimated demographic parameters across entire size classes for 17 tree species (<i>Betula</i>, <i>Carpinus</i>, <i>Fagus</i>, <i>Quercus</i>, <i>Castanea</i>, <i>Acer</i>, <i>Cerasus</i>, <i>Swida</i>, <i>Kalopanax</i>, and <i>Styrax</i>) using a dataset over 18 years obtained from the Ogawa Forest Reserve, an old-growth deciduous forest located in the southern part of the Abukuma Mountains, Ibaraki Prefecture, central Japan (36° 56', 140° 35', 610 m in elevation)<sup> 1)</sup>. Size classes were represented by 12 categories defined based on age, height, and diameter at breast height (DBH): new seedling (age &lt; 1), aged seedling (age ≥ 1 and height &lt; 30 cm), sapling (height 30 cm to 2 m), juvenile (height ≥ 2 m and DBH &lt; 5 cm), D10 (DBH 5–15 cm, D10 was denoted by the midpoint of this range; later classes were similarly defined), D20, D30, D40, D50, D60, D70, and D80 (including trees with DBH ≥ 85 cm). We derived the annual mortality and growth index (i.e., the probability of a living tree transitioning to the next size class) for each species and size class using estimates of transition probabilities between size classes (i.e., stasis, progression and retrogression)<sup>2)</sup>.
