Dataset of "Selective Precipitation of REE-Rich Aluminum Phosphate with Low Lithium Losses from Lithium Enriched Slag Leachate"

Currently, recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries is carried out using mechanical, pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods and their combination. The aim of this article is to study a part of pyro-hydrometallurgical processing of spent lithium-ion batteries which includes lithium slag hydrometallurgical treatment and refining obtained leachate. Lithium slag intended for leaching experiments contains 3,68 % of Li; 11,02 % of Al; 1,17 % of Co; 1,71 % of Cu and other metals in minority content. Leaching step was realized via dry digestion that is an effective method capable of transferring over 99% of the present metals such as Li, Al, Co, Cu and others to the leachate. The highest content in leachate reached Al (2666 µg/mL) and Li (2239 µg/mL). Extraction of metals from leachate can be conducted using various methods, with precipitation being the most used. In this work, the influence of two types of precipitation agent (NaOH, Na3PO4) on precipitation efficiency of Al and Li losses was investigated. It was found that the precipitation of aluminium with NaOH can result in the co-precipitation of lithium, causing total lithium losses up to 40 %. As suitable precipitating agent for complete Al removal from Li leachate with a minimal loss of lithium (less than 2 %), crystalline Na3PO4 was determined under following condition: pH = 3, 400 rpm, 10 minutes, room temperature. Analysis confirmed that, in addition to aluminium, the precipitate also contains REE La (3.4%), Ce (2.5%), Y (1.3%), Nd (1%) and Pr (0.3%), which selective recovery will be the subject of further study.

Carbonate chemistry changes following iron and steel slags dissolution in seawater for Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, and measured dissolution of potentially toxic elements.

Ocean alkalinity enhancement is a carbon capture strategy that has gained interest over the past years. This strategy relies on the dissolution of alkaline minerals to increase the alkalinity of the ocean, among which iron and steel slags are potential candidates. However, their dissolution in seawater as well as the leaching of potentially toxic elements is unknown. These data were collected as part of a research article that assess the alkalinity generation potential of iron and steel slags in MilliQ and seawater, as well as the dissolution of potentially toxic elements. The dataset is composed of various sheets, each of them reporting data from a specific experiment. For each experiment, the analysis details (instrument used, parameters analysed etc) are provided on each individual sheet, and an overview one regroups the main aims of this research as well as the technical terms used throughout.

Dataset on Metallurgical Practices at Dhaskalio, Keros: SEM-EDS Analysis of Slag and Prills

The dataset includes the chemical composition of slag phases, as well as copper and sulphide prills observed in the microstructures of slag samples from the Early Cycladic complex of Dhaskalio, Keros, obtained through SEM-EDS analysis. This data offers new insights into the range of metallurgical activities conducted at the site.

Evidence of smelting has been documented within the settlement itself, indicating the production of unalloyed copper and arsenical copper enriched with nickel and lead. These activities were closely connected to pyrotechnological operations at the nearby smelting site on the Kavos Promontory. Together, Dhaskalio and Kavos represent the only known primary metal production site of the Early Cycladic period outside the metalliferous western Cyclades, which hosted large-scale smelting activities. Secondary metalworking, such as refining and melting arsenical copper, is well-represented in Dhaskalio's material record. Limited evidence of tin-working suggests a focus on recycling practices, likely of tin-bronze scrap metal.

Files used to develop and test SLAG, Seeded Local Assembly of Genes

This dataset consists of configuration files and results files involved in developing and testing SLAG, an iterative Perl pipeline to construct local assemblies seeded on query sequences. SLAG is intended for situations where a full genome assembly is economically or technically infeasible, and thus it emphasizes methods that can deal with shallow read depth. SLAG and its user-runnable test suite have been deposited at https://github.com/cfcrane/SLAG. This Dryad repository contains files that were used in preparing a manuscript, "SLAG: A Program for Seeded Local Assembly of Genes in Complex Genomes", which has been submitted to Molecular Ecology Resources. The repository is divided into sections for scripts, simulated reads, real reads, and benchmarking against two functionally similar programs, aTRAM2 and SRAssembler.

Roman Iron Slag
Correctly known as a smithing hearth cake, quite literally a load of old rubbish. These form at the bottom of a blacksmith's hearth from residual slag in the worked iron and ash from the fire. This example is 9x7cm and has a mass of 207g, making it a relatively small hearth compared to other examples. It has a concave base in which we can see iron staining and a highly irregular top which shows some incorporation of charcoal. Ours was found in modern Staines, Roman Ad Pontes at the County Sports site. Significant amount of slag were found here, suggesting a collection of smithies. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
