SCALIBUR video 3: From sewage sludge to biofertilisers, bioplastics and compounds

<p>This video is part of a 3 part series explaining the innovative technologies being developed in the SCALIBUR project.</p> <p>The script is as follows:</p> <p>Ever wondered what happens next? Normally wastewater is cleaned up, contaminants removed, and returned to the water cycle. The sweet brown residue is known as sewage sludge. Yum. The SCALIBUR project is developing innovative technologies to convert urban sewage sludge into valuable products. Where we see waste SCALIBUR partners see a resource. Two systems are under development. A new start-to-end valorisation process will turn sludge into bio-fertilisers for agriculture, and biogas, which is converted into high value compounds through bioelectrochemical systems. Additionally a novel demo plant is being built for the production of PHA bioplastics from sludge. These technologies will help cities manage waste in a more sustainable and cost efficient way. And contribute to the creation of a truly circular bioeconomy in Europe.</p>

Data_Torrefaction of pulp industry sludge to enhance its fuel characteristics

<p>Recently, under COP26, several countries agreed to phase-out coal from their energy systems. Torrefaction industry can take advantage of this, as the fuel characteristics of the torrefied biomass are comparable to those of coal. However, in terms of economic feasibility, torrefied biomass pellets are not yet competitive with coal without subsidies because of the high price of woody biomass. Thus, there is a need to produce torrefied pellets from low-cost feedstock, and pulp industry sludge is one such feedstock. In that context, this study was focused on torrefaction of pulp industry sludge. Torrefaction experiments were carried out using a continuous reactor, at temperatures 250, 275, and 300 ℃. The heating value of the sludge increased from 19 to 22 MJ/kg after torrefaction at 300 ℃. The fixed carbon content increased from 16 wt.% for dried pulp sludge to 30 wt.% for torrefied pulp sludge. The fuel ratio was in the range of 0.27 to 0.61. The ash content of the pulp sludge is comparable to the agricultural waste, which is around 12 wt.% (dry basis). The cellulose content in the sludge reduced from 35 to 12 wt.% at 300 ℃. The ash related issues such as slagging, fouling and bed agglomeration tendency of the sludge were in the medium range. This study shows that torrefaction treatment can improve the fuel properties of the pulp industry sludge to a level comparable to that of low-rank coal.</p>

Data Set for_Integrating torrefaction of pulp industry sludge with anaerobic digestion to produce biomethane and volatile fatty acids: An example of industrial symbiosis for circular bioeconomy

<p>Industrial symbiosis, which allows the sharing of resources between different industries, could help to improve the overall feasibility of bio-based chemicals production. In that regard, this study focused on integrating the torrefaction of pulp industry sludge with anaerobic digestion. More specifically, anaerobic digestion (AD) of pulp sludge-derived torrefaction condensate (TC) was studied to evaluate the biomethane and volatile fatty acid (VFA) potential. The torrefaction condensate produced at 275 and 300 &deg;C was used in AD. The volatile solid content (VS) was 6.69 and 9.01% for the condensate produced at 275 and 300 &deg;C, respectively. The organic fraction of TC mainly contained acetic acid, 2-furanmethanol, and syringol. The methane yield was in the range of 481&ndash;772 mL/g VS for the mesophilic and 401&ndash;746 mL/g VS for the thermophilic process, respectively. The VFA yield was in the range of 1.1 to 3.4 g/g VS for mesophilic and from 1.5 to 4.7 g/g VS in thermophilic conditions, when methanogenesis was inhibited. Finally, pulp sludge TC is a feasible feedstock to produce platform chemicals like VFA. However, at higher substrate loading, signs of process inhibition were observed because of the relatively increasing concentration of microbial inhibitors</p>

The samples were collected in January, May, August, December 2016, February, June, September, and December 2017 from four wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). At WWTP Ilha do Governador, samples were collected in all eight seasons. Due to various reasons, it was not always possible to collect samples from the other WWTPs. The WWTP Alegria had five collections, while Barra and Sarapu&iacute; had three.</p> <p>The chemical characterization of the sludges was conducted based on the parameters required by Resolution n&ordm; 498/2020 of the National Council for the Environment (BRASIL, 2020). The elements P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Al, Na, Co, Mn, As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Se, Pb, and Zn were determined using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The dry combustion method determined the C and N contents using a CHN-600 elemental autoanalyzer. The organic matter content was determined by multiplying the total carbon present in each sample by the &ldquo;van Bemmelen&rdquo; conversion factor of 1.724. The pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were determined by taking 5 g of each sample and diluting it in 50 mL of deionized water. The mixture was stirred for 30 minutes and then measured using a bench pH and conductivity meter.</p> <p>The valorization of the sludge batches was performed using the substitute goods method, which compares the prices of products well-established in the market with the good to be valued. The sludge was valued for its N, P, and K contents. The inputs quoted as sources of these nutrients were the mineral fertilizers urea (N), triple superphosphate (P), and potassium chloride (K). The fertilizers' megagram prices were divided by the percentage of nutrients they contain to calculate each nutrient's value.</p> <p>Fertilizer prices were consulted in: CONAB. Data_ Integrating torrefaction of pulp industry sludge with anaerobic digestion to produce bioenergy and biochemicals: Techno-economic and environmental feasibility analysis

<p>In order to improve the economic competitiveness of bioenergy carriers and biochemicals, they must be produced<br> from low-cost or no-cost feedstock and at a reduced operational expenses. In that regard, this study<br> focused on understanding the techno-economic feasibility of using pulp sludge as a low-cost alternative feedstock<br> to forestry biomass in torrefaction. Economic feasibility of further integrating pulp sludge torrefaction with<br> anaerobic digestion to produce energy, biomethane and volatile fatty acids (VFA) was also studied. The operational<br> expenses were around 8.2 and 2.04 M&euro; and the minimum selling price of torrefied pellets was 407 and<br> 189 &euro;/t for forestry biomass torrefaction and pulp sludge torrefaction respectively. In case of integrated approaches,<br> VFA production showed higher economic feasibility with a torrefied pellets selling price of 163 &euro;/t<br> compared with biomethane production (213 &euro;/t). The biomethane and VFA selling price can be reduced by 90<br> and 64% compared with current market price at torrefied pellets selling price of 260 &euro;/t. Sensitivity analysis<br> revealed that, moisture content of the sludge is the main influencing parameter on the overall economic feasibility<br> of the pulp sludge torrefaction. The environmental analysis showed that pulp sludge torrefaction has higher<br> emissions compared with forestry biomass torrefaction.</p>

A pilot-scale partial nitritation-anammox process for treatment of anaerobic sludge digester effluent

<p>In most of the wastewater treatment operational practices with anaerobic sludge digestion, the ammonia rich centrate (&gt;100mg/L) is recycled back to the main treatment line which increases the NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>-N loading to the treatment by as much as 10&ndash;30% (Fan 2020). The partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) process is a biological process that provides an environmentally, economically, and technically sound solution to treat anaerobic sludge digester effluent.</p> <p>The application of the anammox process in the wastewater system could result in higher nitrogen removal in the digester effluent as there have been related research conducted at lab-scale using synthetic wastewater (Awolusi et al., 2020). However, due to the process sensitivity to operating conditions, there is a need to optimize at pilot scale to emerge as an efficient process, especially in the South African environment as this technology has a possibility to be promoted as an alternative and/or additional bioprocess to be applied in full scale throughout the country.</p>

Non-redundant metagenome-assembled genomes of activated sludge reactors at different disturbances and scales

<p>Metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) are microbial genomes reconstructed from metagenomic data and can be assigned to known taxa or lead to uncovering novel ones. MAGs can provide insights into how microbes interact with the environment. Here, we performed genome-resolved metagenomics on sequencing data from four studies using sequencing batch reactors at microcosm (~25 mL) and mesocosm (~4 L) scales inoculated with sludge from full-scale wastewater treatment plants. These studies investigated how microbial communities in such plants respond to two environmental disturbances: the presence of toxic 3-chloroaniline and changes in organic loading rate. We report 839 non-redundant MAGs with at least 50% completeness and 10% contamination (MIMAG medium-quality criteria). From these, 399 are of putative high-quality, while sixty-seven meet the MIMAG high-quality criteria. MAGs in this catalogue represent the microbial communities in sixty-eight laboratory-scale reactors used for the disturbance experiments, and in the full-scale wastewater treatment plant which provided the source sludge. This dataset can aid meta-studies aimed at understanding the responses of microbial communities to disturbances, particularly as ecosystems confront rapid environmental changes.</p>

Long-term observation of the end-of- treatment sludge quality from a Parisian WWTP treating wastewater from 6.5 M inhabitants

<p>Wastewater contains a wide range of biological and chemical markers related to human activity. The collection and analysis of these markers in the effluents (wastewater and sludge) allow to qualify the public health of the population and to evaluate the impact of the chemicals used in daily life on the environment.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>In line with these studies, the Innovation Department of SIAAP and its scientific partners (ISA and LEESU) has created an Observatory of the city with the objectives of:</p> <p>&bull; Monitoring the long-term dynamics of known and/or potential pollutants according to French regulations.</p> <p>&bull; Contributing to studies aimed at a better understanding of anthropogenic activities.</p> <p>&bull; Structuring and centralizing data (wastewater and end-of-treatment sludge), ensuring their storage for 10 years.</p> <p>&bull; Providing technical and scientific knowledge by publishing every two years the data generated by the Observatory of the city via the open platform Zenodo.</p> <p>Regarding the end-of-treatment sludge, the Seine Aval (SAV) plant has been chosen as a strategic location, since the catchment area corresponds to the Parisian west catchment (6.5 million inhabitants). Data on the sludge micropollution (in metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons &ndash; PAHs and polychlorinated biphenyls &ndash; PCBs) are available since 1980 and are provided in the present datasets.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) growth response to nitrogen in a sandy soil amended with acidified manure and municipal sludge after "Quick Wash" treatment

<p>The Quick Wash (QW) treatment extracts phosphorus (P) from manure and municipal sludge (MS), producing an organic acidified by-product with adequate nitrogen (N):P ratio to meet crop N requirements. Yet, data on crop response to N using QW by-products are lacking. We evaluated the response of annual ryegrass (<span class="html-italic">Lolium multiflorum</span> Lam.) and potential N leaching in sandy soil to N applications using raw wastes, their corresponding QW by-products, and ammonium sulfate (AMS) fertilizer. Treatments included a control (no amendment added), raw and acid-washed chicken litter, dairy and swine manure, MS, and AMS at 100, 200, and 400 kg N ha<sup>−1</sup>.</p>
