Sap Flow in Red Maple and Red Oak in the Harvard Forest Snow Removal Study 2011

The climate is changing in mid and high latitude environments with the depth and duration of snowpack shrinking for many temperate forest ecosystems. A reduced snowpack and increased depth and duration of soil frost can injure fine roots, which are essential for plant water uptake. Water uptake is a crucial component of ecosystem functioning because this process strongly impacts other biological processes, such as primary productivity and nutrient uptake. We evaluated the effects of changing winter climate, including snow and soil frost dynamics, on rates of water uptake (i.e. sap flow) in a snow manipulation study at Harvard Forest. We had three reference and tree plots from which we removed snow and induced soil freezing.

Lake snow removal experiment zooplankton community data, under ice, 2019-2021

Although it is a historically understudied season, winter is now recognized as a time of biological activity and relevant to the annual cycle of north-temperate lakes. Emerging research points to a future of reduced ice cover duration and changing snow conditions that will impact aquatic ecosystems. The aim of the study was to explore how altered snow and ice conditions, and subsequent changes to under-ice light environment, might impact ecosystem dynamics in a north, temperate bog lake in northern Wisconsin, USA. This dataset resulted from a snow removal experiment that spanned the periods of ice cover on South Sparkling Bog during the winters of 2019, 2020, and 2021. During the winters 2020 and 2021, snow was removed from the surface of South Sparkling Bog using an ARGO ATV with a snow plow attached. The 2019 season served as a reference year, and snow was not removed from the lake. This dataset represents under ice zooplankton community samples (integrated tows at depths of 7 m) and some shoulder-season (open water) zooplankton community samples. Zooplankton samples were preserved in 90% ethanol and later processed to determine taxonomic classification at the species-level, density (individuals / L), and average length (mm).

This dataset represents phytoplankton community samples (pooled epilimnion and hypolimnion samples representative of 7 m water column) both under-ice and during some shoulder-season (open water) dates. Samples were collected into amber bottles and preserved with Lugol's solution before they were sent to Phycotech Inc. (St. Joseph MI, USA) for phytoplankton taxonomic identification and quantification.

Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) Extended sites: winter ecosystem respiration chamber measurements using snow removal method. Oct-Nov 2009, Oct-Dec 2011, Oct-Nov; March-April 2012, Feb-May 2013.

The Carbon in Permafrost Experimental Heating Research (CiPEHR) project addresses the following questions: 1) Does ecosystem warming cause a net release of C from the ecosystem to the atmosphere?, 2) Does the decomposition of old C, that comprises the bulk of the soil C pool, influence ecosystem C loss?, and 3) How do winter and summer warming alone, and in combination, affect ecosystem C exchange? We are answering these questions using a combination of field and laboratory experiments to measure ecosystem carbon balance and radiocarbon isotope ratios at a warming experiment located in an upland tundra field site near Healy, Alaska in the foothills of the Alaska Range. This dataset contains point measurements of winter ecosystem respiration fluxes using the snow removal method and the soil temperature, air temperature, and snow depth associated with each flux.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Soil-atmosphere fluxes of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane on snow removal plots

Soil atmosphere fluxes of the trace gases; carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) have been measured at several locations at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) including 1) the “freeze” study reference plots that provide contrast between stands dominated (80%) by sugar maple versus yellow birch and low and high elevation areas, 2) the Bear Brook Watershed where trace gas sampling is coordinated with long-term monitoring of microbial biomass and activity and 3) watershed 1 where trace gas sampling locations were co-located with long-term microbial biomass and activity monitoring sites that are located near a subset of the lysimeter sites established for the calcium addition study on this watershed. This dataset contains the Freeze study data. Watershed 1 and Bear Brook trace gas data can be found in: https://portal.edirepository.org/nis/mapbrowse?scope=knb-lter-hbr&identifier=116. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. These data have been published in: Groffman, P. M., Hardy, J. P., Driscoll, C. T., & Fahey, T. J. (2006). Snow depth, soil freezing, and fluxes of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane in a northern hardwood forest. Global Change Biology, 12, 1748–1760.

Moose activity and nitrogen cycling along an elevation gradient on the snow removal plots at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest.

The response of moose activity and three tree species to soil freezing were measured through experimental manipulation (shoveling) of snow to induce soil freezing. In addition, mechanical clipping of plants to simulate moose browsing and the addition of 15N labeled moose feces were included to determine the biogeochemical and plant response. N dynamics were evaluated using soil tension lysimeters, soil sampling, tracing movement of moose fecal N into soil, plant and microbial pools and leaching loss. Both total N and 15N were measured in all pools and fluxes. Fluxes include N mineralization and nitrification rates. Rate of decomposition and fate was also followed for moose feces. This data set includes measurents from 2003 to 2006. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
