Social-Ecological Dynamics of Recreational Fishery Landscapes: Recreational angler catch and satisfaction in the Midwest, 2018 to 2024

The goal of this dataset is to understand angler information gathering and sharing, technology use, expectation-setting, site choice, and the factors influencing angler satisfaction in rural and urban environments. These data were collected through on-site creel surveys and instantaneous counts of fishing effort and associated angler vehicles. Traditional creel surveys are completed only at the end of an angler's fishing trip. These dual-intercept creel survey data are novel because anglers were intercepted both before and after their fishing trip. This survey design allowed us to collect unbiased estimates of anglers' expected catch. These data can be used to understand the role of angler expectations in angler satisfaction and behavior. Data collection were conducted in two counties in Wisconsin, USA. Vilas County is a primarily rural, forested, and glaciated region with many relatively small lakes. Dane County has a larger urban center (Madison, WI) that is surrounded by agricultural areas. Most of the Dane County lakes surveyed were part of the Yahara chain of lakes: Lakes Mendota, Monona, Wingra, Waubesa, and Kegonsa. Dane county has fewer, larger lakes with greater connectivity to each other. Vilas County was sampled in the summer of 2018, the summer of 2019, and the summer and winter of 2022. Dane County was sampled in the winter and summer of 2022.

Wildlife in urban neighborhoods of the greater Phoenix, Arizona metropolitan area: patterns that span a social-ecological gradient in 2021

Wildlife communities are structured by numerous ecological filters in cities that influence their populations, and some species even manage to thrive in urban landscapes. CAP researchers were the first to observe “the luxury effect”, the hypothesis that biodiversity is positively related to income of residents. The luxury effect is still being tested worldwide twenty years later and has led to important new research on other socio-demographic factors that shape biodiversity but are vastly understudied, such as race and ethnicity, as well as the interaction of these factors with urban structural inequalities that may be hidden by income. This research aims to unpack the luxury effect by considering other landscape and socio-demographic factors that may influence wildlife communities across neighborhoods of metro Phoenix. Specifically, we are investigating if neighborhood income and ethnicity independently influence mammal occupancy in neighborhoods across the CAP ecosystem. To answer this question, we leveraged a wildlife camera array across CAP within community parks, in which cameras are placed across a gradient of average median household income and percent Latinx of residents. Incorporating socioeconomic data into urban mammal research will allow for the advancement in the understanding of socio-ecological patterns.

Dataset: Multi-level network dataset of social-ecological interdependencies in ten Swiss wetlands based on qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys

<p>The dataset originated from quantitative online surveys and qualitative expert interviews with organizational actors relevant to the governance of ten Swiss wetlands from 2019 till 2021. Multi-level networks represent the wetlands governance for each of the ten cases. The collaboration networks of actors form the first level of the multi-level networks and are connected to multiple other network levels that account for the social and ecological systems those actors are active in. 521 actors relevant to the management of the ten wetlands are included in the collaboration networks; quantitative survey data exists for 71% of them. A unique feature of the collaboration networks is that it differentiates between positive and negative forms of collaboration specified based on actors&#39; activity areas. Therefore, the data describes not only if actors collaborate but also how and where actors collaborate. Further additional two-mode networks (actor participation in forums and involvement in other regions outside the case area) are elicited in the survey and connected to the collaboration network. Finally, the dataset also contains data on ecological system interdependencies in the form of conceptual maps derived from 34 expert interviews (3-4 experts per case).</p>

People &amp; Nature.</span>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><span>Abstract</span></p> <p>1. &nbsp;In contrast to many contemporary negative human-nature relationships, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities have stewarded nature through cultural practices that include reciprocal contributions for both humans and nature. A rare example is the century-old artisanal fishery in which net-casting fishers and wild dolphins benefit by working together, but little is known about the persistence of the social-ecological system formed around this cultural practice.</p> <p>2. Here, we frame the human-dolphin cooperative fishery in southern Brazil as a social-ecological system based on secondary data from the scientific and grey literature. To investigate the dynamics of this system, we survey the local and traditional ecological knowledge and examine potential changes in its main component&mdash;the artisanal fishers&mdash;over time and space.</p> <p>3. Over 16 years, we conducted four interview campaigns with 188 fishers in fishing sites that are more open (accessible) or closed (restricted) to external influence. We investigated their experience, engagement, and economic dependence on dolphin-assisted fishing, as well as the learning processes and transmission of the traditional knowledge required to cooperate with dolphins.</p> <p>4. Our qualitative data suggest that fishers using accessible and restricted fishing sites have equivalent fishing experience, but those in more restrictive sites tend to be more economically dependent on dolphins, relying on them for fishing year-round. The traditional knowledge on how to cooperate with dolphins is mostly acquired via social learning, with a tendency for vertical learning to be frequent among fishers using sites more restrictive for outsiders. Experience, economic dependence, and reliance on vertical learning seem to decrease recently, especially in the accessible site. Our quantitative analyses, however, suggest that some of these fluctuations were not significant.</p> <p>5. Our study outlines the key components of this social-ecological system and identifies changes in the attributes of a main component, the users. These changes, when coupled with changes on other components such as governance and resource units (fish and dolphins), can have implications for the persistence of this cultural practice and the livelihoods of Local Communities. We suggest that continuous monitoring of this system can help to safeguard the reciprocal contributions of this human-nature relationship in years to come.</p>

Adirondack Public Good Events Database: Natural Resource, Environmental, Economic and Recreation Policy and Common Pool Resources for a Social-Ecological System in Adirondack Park, New York, USA, 1760-2020.

I assembled this dataset from various published sources to evaluate how the social-ecological system (SES) in Adirondack Park, New York changed through time and the interplay of public goods (Common Pool Resources, CPRs), public land rules and private land rights, and related concepts over 260 years (1760-2020). The database was the basis for a doctoral dissertation titled "Blue Lining: Assessing the Resilience of Adirondack Park, New York Using Polycentricity and Panarchy Frameworks." The goal of the dissertation was to assess patterns and changes in institutional rules, actors and arrangements before and after establishment of the public Adirondack Forest Preserve in 1885 and Adirondack Park in 1892 as those actors and rules were modified and as both internal and external events influenced the SES as it moved through different phases of the adaptive cycle through space and time (see panarchy). Using the database, I identified which organizations and events contributed to natural resource and CPR policy. Social-ecological dynamics of quarry restoration: a Flickr data analysis

<div> <div> <div> <p><span>With increasing urbanization and demand for construction materials, quarries have become central to the recovery of degraded landscapes into spaces that offer ecological, but also social benefits. While ecological restoration has long been investigated, integrated social-ecological restoration of post-mining landscapes remains underexplored. The overall aim of this study is to assess the perceptions of cultural ecosystem services and landscape features expressed in social media posts about quarries in Germany, Denmark, and the Czech Republic. We focus on concepts of cultural ecosystem services and landscape features to investigate the interactions between humans and restored ecosystems. Using a mixed-methods approach, we analyzed 1,660 geotagged photographs from 50 quarries across three regions: Berlin, Roskilde, and the Czech Karst. Flickr social media images were analyzed to elicit the richness of cultural ecosystem services (CES) and landscape features (LF), highlighting popular quarries and their social-ecological significance. Our results indicate that rehabilitated quarries exhibit higher CES richness than abandoned or operational ones, and that accessibility significantly influences public engagement. Our study demonstrates that once primarily industrial sites, quarries can evolve into vibrant social-ecological systems that provide diverse landscape features and cultural ecosystem services. It also points to the potential of social media data for designing restoration efforts from a social-ecological perspective. Such an approach provides insights into public perceptions of restored landscapes and may inform future restoration strategies.&nbsp;</span></p> <p>&nbsp;This dataset includes: (1) the review protocol, (2) a list of place names used for data collection on Flickr when posts were not geolocated, (3) data on landscape features and cultural ecosystem services identified in Flickr posts from 50 study quarries, (4) characteristics of the quarries, and (5) a shapefile of the quarry polygons.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> </div> </div>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Higuera, P.E., M.C. Cook, J.K. Balch, E.N. Stavros, A.L. Mahood, and L.A. St. Denis. 2023. PNAS Nexus 2: In Press.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>Structure loss is an acute, costly impact of the wildfire crisis in the western United States ("West"), motivating the need to understand recent trends and causes. We document a 246% rise in West-wide structure loss from wildfires between 1999–2009 and 2010–2020, driven strongly by events in 2017, 2018, and 2020. Increased structure loss was not due to increased area burned alone. Wildfires became significantly more destructive, with a 160% higher structure loss rate (loss/kha burned) over the past decade. Structure loss was driven primarily by wildfires from unplanned human-related ignitions (e.g. backyard burning, power lines, etc.), which accounted for 76% of all structure loss and resulted in 10 times more structures destroyed per unit area burned compared to lightning-ignited fires. Annual structure loss was well explained by area burned from human-related ignitions, while decadal structure loss was explained by state-level structure abundance in flammable vegetation. Both predictors increased over recent decades and likely interacted with increased fuel aridity to drive structure-loss trends. While states are diverse in patterns and trends, nearly all experienced more burning from human-related ignitions and/or higher structure loss rates, particularly California, Washington, and Oregon. Our findings highlight how fire regimes – characteristics of fire over space and time – are fundamentally social-ecological phenomena. By resolving the diversity of Western fire regimes, our work informs regionally appropriate mitigation and adaptation strategies. With millions of structures with high fire risk, reducing human-related ignitions and rethinking how we build are critical for preventing future wildfire disasters.</span></p>

Dataset: 'Protected Designations of Origin' (PDO) per NUTS-3 regions plus PDO-scores and social-ecological indicators (v2)

<p>The dataset contains the original research data belonging to the research article "EU-wide mapping of &lsquo;Protected Designations of Origin&rsquo; food products (PDOs) reveals correlations with social-ecological landscape values" (Flinzberger et al. 2022: <a href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s13593-022-00778-4">https://doi.org/10.1007/s13593-022-00778-4</a>).</p> <p>Based on the mapping of 638 food products registered within the EU as 'Protected Designation of Origin' (PDO), the first excel file <em>"EU28_all_PDO_products_per_NUTS3.xlsx"</em> shows the distribution of PDO-labeled products across the EU28 NUTS-3 regions. All NUTS-3 regions are listed once for each PDO product they contain (as by 30 June 2020).</p> <p>The second excel file <em>"PDO_scores_and_social_ecological_indicator_data.xlsx"</em> includes the accumulated numbers of PDOs per NUTS-3 region (called PDO score) as registered by 30 June 2020. The PDO score is presented for all food products combined, and for four major food categories separately. The dataset contains the result of our survey of 400 participants - visitors to the PLA Czech Karst who visited one of the eight study quarries and were questioned in the quarry. When selecting participants for our study, purposive sampling was applied to receive a gender-balanced sample of participants of various ages. We used a paper questionnaire suitable for the data collection directly in the field. The questionnaire was anonymous.&nbsp;</p>

Data for: Social-ecological vulnerability of fishing communities to climate change: a U.S. West Coast case study

<p><span>Climate change is already impacting coastal communities, and ongoing and future </span><span>shifts in fisheries species productivity from climate change have implications for the </span><span>livelihoods and cultures of coastal communities. Harvested marine species in the </span><span>California Current Large Marine Ecosystem support U.S. West Coast communities </span><span>economically, socially, and culturally. Ecological vulnerability assessments exist for </span><span>individual species in the California Current but ecological and human vulnerability are </span><span>linked and vulnerability is expected to vary by community. Here, we present </span><span>automatable, reproducible methods for assessing the vulnerability of U.S. West Coast </span><span>fishing-dependent communities to climate change within a social-ecological </span><span>vulnerability framework. We first assessed the ecological risk of marine resources, on </span><span>which fishing communities rely, to 50 years of climate change projections. We then </span><span>combined this with the adaptive capacity of fishing communities, based on social </span><span>indicators, to assess the potential ability of communities to cope with future changes. </span><span>Specific communities (particularly in Washington state) were determined to be at risk to </span><span>climate change mainly due to economic reliance on at risk marine fisheries species, </span><span>like salmon, hake, or sea urchins. But, due to higher social adaptive capacity, these </span><span>communities were often not found to be the most vulnerable overall. Conversely, </span><span>certain communities that were not the most at risk, ecologically and economically, </span><span>ranked in the category of highly vulnerable communities due to low adaptive capacity </span><span>based on social indicators (particularly in Southern California). Certain communities </span><span>were both ecologically at risk due to catch composition and socially vulnerable (low </span><span>adaptive capacity) leading to the highest tier of vulnerability. The integration of climatic, </span><span>ecological, economic, and societal data reveals that factors underlying vulnerability are </span><span>variable across fishing communities on the U.S West Coast, and suggests the need to </span><span>develop a variety of well-aligned strategies to adapt to the ecological impacts of climate </span><span>change.</span></p>

Data for: Social-ecological predictors of spotted hyena navigation through a shared landscape

<p>Human-wildlife interactions are increasing in severity due to climate change and proliferating urbanization. Regions where human infrastructure and activity are rapidly densifying or newly appearing constitute novel environments in which wildlife must learn to coexist with people, thereby serving as ideal case studies with which to infer future human-wildlife interactions in shared landscapes.<em> </em>As a widely reviled and behaviorally plastic apex predator, the spotted hyena (<em>Crocuta crocuta</em>) is a model species for understanding how large carnivores navigate these human-caused 'landscapes of fear' in a changing world. Using high-resolution GPS collar data, we applied resource selection functions and step selection functions to assess spotted hyena landscape navigation and fine-scale movement decisions in relation to social-ecological features in a rapidly developing region comprising two protected areas: Lake Nakuru National Park and Soysambu Conservancy, Kenya. We then used camera trap imagery and Barrier Behavior Analysis (BaBA) to further examine hyena interactions with barriers. Our results show that environmental factors, linear infrastructure, human-carnivore conflict hotspots, and human tolerance were all important predictors for landscape-scale resource selection by hyenas, while human experience elements were less important for fine-scale hyena movement decisions. Hyena selection for these characteristics also changed seasonally and across land management types. Camera traps documented an exceptionally high number of individual spotted hyenas (234) approaching the national park fence at 16 sites during the study period, and BaBA results suggested that hyenas perceive protected area boundaries' semi-permeable electric fences as risky but may cross them out of necessity. Our findings highlight that the ability of carnivores to flexibly respond within human-caused landscapes of fear may be expressed differently depending on context, scale, and climatic factors. These results also point to the need to incorporate societal factors into multiscale analyses of wildlife movement to effectively plan for human-wildlife coexistence.</p>

Data from: The roles of non-production vegetation in agroecosystems: a research framework for filling process knowledge gaps in a social-ecological context

<p>1. An ever-expanding human population, climatic changes, and the spread of intensive farming practices is putting increasing pressure on agroecosystems and their inherent biodiversity. Non-production vegetation elements, such as woody patches, riparian margins, and restoration plantings, are vital for conserving agroecosystem biodiversity. Further, such elements are key building blocks that are manipulated via land management, thereby influencing the biotic and abiotic processes that underpin functioning agroecosystems.</p> <p>2. Despite this critical role, there has been a lack of synthesis on which types of vegetation elements drive and/or support ecological processes, and the mechanisms by which this occurs. Using a systematic, quantitative literature review of 342 articles, we asked: what are the effects of non-production vegetation on agroecosystem processes and how are these processes measured within global agroecosystems?</p> <p>3. Woody patches, hedgerows and borders, riparian margins, and shelterbelts were the most studied types of non-production vegetation. The majority (61%) of studies showed positive effects of non-production vegetation on ecological processes, where the presence, level or rate of the studied process was increased or enhanced.</p> <p>4. However, four key research gaps were revealed: (1) most studies (83%) used proxies for, instead of direct measurements of, ecosystem processes related to non-production vegetation; (2) study designs used to investigate non-production vegetation effects on ecosystem processes directly were largely limited to observational comparisons of non-production vegetation types, farm-scale vegetation configurations, and different proximities to vegetation in terms of the effect on ecological processes; relatively few studies used manipulative experiments (3) the relatively few studies directly measuring ecosystem processes were dominated by four process categories: invertebrate biocontrol, predator and natural enemy spillover, animal movement, and ecosystem cycling, and (4) the methods used to directly measure non-production vegetation effects comprised a surprisingly limited set of approaches.</p> <p>5. To fill key research gaps that will inform the use of non-production vegetation to enhance agroecosystem processes, we present a framework for future research that emphasises the need to combine an understanding of human decision making with carefully-designed and targeted investigations into the roles of taxa, ecosystem processes, and landscape heterogeneity related to non-production vegetation, at multiple spatial scales within agroecosystems.</p>
