Organized actors at the biodiversity science-policy-society interface
<p>This database was developed in the context of the Deliverable 2.1 of the BioAgora project 'Developing the Science Service for European Research and Biodiversity Policymaking' (<a href="https://bioagora.eu/)">https://bioagora.eu/)</a>. BioAgora is a collaborative European project funded by the Horizon Europe programme (Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, grant agreement No. 101059438). The project's main outcome is intended to be the development of a Science Service for Biodiversity, the principal EU mechanism to connect research and knowledge on biodiversity to the needs of policy making through a continuous dialogue. The ultimate goal of BioAgora and of the Science Service is to support the implementation of the Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, and more broadly the sustainability transition required by the EU Green Deal. The BioAgora project was launched in July 2022 for a duration of 5 years. It gathers a Consortium of 22 partners, from 13 European countries, led the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). Partners represent a diversity of actors coming from academia, public authorities, SMEs, and associations. Views and opinions expressed are those of the authors only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them. </p> <p>In order to develop the database, a thorough desk search was conducted to compile an extensive, albeit not exhaustive, list of organizations operating at the science-policy-society interface in the context of biodiversity and sustainability. In collecting the list, we focused on actors operating at EU level, although we also included particularly relevant international, regional or national organized actors. The desk search built upon the work already developed in the context of two pan-European projects, funded by the Seventh framework programme of the European Community: ‘Developing a Knowledge Network for European Expertise on biodiversity and ecosystem services to inform policy making and economic sectors (KNEU, 2010-2014, grant 265299) and ‘Establishing a European Knowledge and Learning Mechanism to Improve the Policy-Science-Society Interface on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services’ (Eklipse, 2016-2020, grant 690474). The two above-mentioned projects preceded the BioAgora project in that they aimed at understanding and improving the effectiveness of the biodiversity science-policy(-society) interface in Europe. Such projects had thus already compiled extensive databases of relevant organizations in Europe (including national and international actors, in addition to EU level actors), and quantified the relevance of such organizations based on votes cast by project members and based on interviews with key organizations. The database developed through the desk search conducted was further refined with suggestions for relevant organizations provided by BioAgora’s participants and by the representatives of the organizations interviewed during the other steps of the data collection. The data collection processes started in September 2022 and was updated until June 2024. Note that the categories for network types (Columns E-F) are not mutually exclusive. For further details about the development of the database please see Deliverable 2.1 (<a href="https://bioagora.eu/deliverables/">https://bioagora.eu/deliverables/</a>). </p>

Smarter open government data for Society 5.0: analysis of 51 OGD portals
<p>This dataset contains data collected during a study <a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/s21155204">"Smarter open government data for Society 5.0: are your open data smart enough"</a> (<em>Sensors</em>. 2021; 21(15):5204) conducted by Anastasija Nikiforova (University of Latvia).<br> It being made public both to act as supplementary data for "Smarter open government data for Society 5.0: are your open data smart enough" paper and in order for other researchers to use these data in their own work.</p> <p>The data in this dataset were collected in the result of the inspection of 60 countries and their OGD portals (total of 51 OGD portal in May 2021) to find out whether they meet the trends of Society 5.0 and Industry 4.0 obtained by conducting an analysis of relevant OGD portals.</p> <p>Each portal has been studied starting with a search for a data set of interest, i.e. “real-time”, “sensor” and “covid-19”, follwing by asking a list of additional questions.<br> These questions were formulated on the basis of combination of (1) crucial open (government) data-related aspects, including open data principles, success factors, recent studies on the topic, PSI Directive etc., (2) trends and features of Society 5.0 and Industry 4.0, (3) elements of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use Model (UTAUT).</p> <p>The method used belongs to typical / daily tasks of open data portals sometimes called “usability test” – keywords related to a research question are used to filter data sets, i.e. “real-time”, “real time” and “real time”, “sensor”, covid”, “covid-19”, “corona”, “coronavirus”, “virus”. In most cases, “real-time”, “sensor” and “covid” keywords were sufficient.<br> The examination of the respective aspects for less user-friendly portals was adapted to particular case based on the portal or data set specifics, by checking:<br> 1. are the open data related to the topic under question ({sensor; real-time; Covid-19}) published, i.e. available?<br> 2. are these data available in a machine-readable format?<br> 3. are these data current, i.e. regularly updated? Where the criteria on the currency depends on the nature of data, i.e. Covid-19 data on the number of cases per day is expected to be updated daily, which won’t be sufficient for real-time data as the title supposes etc.<br> 4. is API ensured for these data? having most importance for real-time and sensor data;<br> 5. have they been published in a timely manner? which was verified mainly for Covid-19 related data. The timeliness is assessed by comparing the dates of the first case identified in a given country and the first release of open data on this topic.<br> 6. what is the total number of available data sets?<br> 7. does the open government data portal provides use-cases / showcases? <br> 8. does the open government portal provide an opportunity to gain insight into the popularity of the data, i.e. does the portal provide statistics of this nature, such as the number of views, downloads, reuses, rating etc.?<br> 9. is there an opportunity to provide a feedback, comment, suggestion or complaint?<br> 10. Physical Hydrologic Data for the National Audubon Society's 16 Research Sites in coastal mangrove transition zone of southern Florida, March 1986 - ongoing
Temperature, salinity and depth were continuously collected using Hydrolab/Hach sensors within the coastal mangrove transition zone at 16 sites from southern Biscayne Bay to Cape Sable. Data were collected at 12 sites within the coastal mangrove zone of Everglades National Park, incorporating the Cape Sable, Taylor River and Panhandle region. Data were collected at 4 sites within the coastal mangrove zone of southern Biscayne Bay, incorporating the Manatee Bay, Barnes Sound, and Card Sound regions. Rainfall, pH, and dissolved oxygen were collected at a number of these sites with varying periods of record.
Collection of global datasets for the study of floods, droughts and their interactions with human societies
<p>This is a collection of 134 global and free datasets allowing for spatial (and temporal) analyses of floods, droughts and their interactions with human societies. We have structured the datasets into seven categories: hydrographic baseline, hydrological dynamics, hydrological extremes, land cover & agriculture, human presence, water management, and vulnerability. <p>Data protocol and datasets used for the study entitled 'A value creation model from science-society interconnections: Components and archetypes'. </p> <p><strong>Abstract of the paper:</strong></p> <p>The interplay between science and society takes place through a wide range of intertwined relationships and mutual influences that shape each other and facilitate continuous knowledge flows. Stylised consequentialist perspectives on valuable knowledge moving from public science to society in linear and recursive pathways, whilst informative, cannot fully capture the broad spectrum of value creation possibilities. As an alternative we experiment with an approach that gathers together diverse science-society interconnections and reciprocal research-related knowledge processes that can generate valorisation. Our approach to value creation attempts to incorporate multiple facets, directions and dynamics in which constellations of scientific and societal actors generate value from research. The paper develops a conceptual model based on a set of nine value components derived from four key research-related knowledge processes: production, translation, communication, and utilization. The paper conducts an exploratory empirical study to investigate whether a set of archetypes can be discerned among these components that structure science-society interconnections. We explore how such archetypes vary between major scientific fields. Each archetype is overlaid on a research topic map, with our results showing that different archetypes correspond to distinctive topic areas. The paper finishes by discussing the significance and limitations of our results and the potential of both our model and our empirical approach for further research.</p>

Dataset on the dental morphology and occlusal dental wear of pre-colonial societies of the South and Southeast Coast of Brazil
<p>This dataset compiles information on dental morphology and occlusal dental wear of 431 individuals exhumed from coastal and riverine sites of the South and Southeast Coast of Brazil, dated between approximately 10,000 to 1,000 years before present. Dental traits were scored according to the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System (ASUDAS) (Scott and Irish, 2017; Turner II et al., 1991). Few additional mandibular traits were added following Hauser and Stefano (1989). Occlusal dental wear was scored according to the method described in Smith (1984).</p> <p>Sex and age at death estimations derive from previous studies (Estevam, 2020; Fischer, 2012; Neves et al., 2005; Silva, 2005; Tognoli, 2016; Wesolowski, 2007). When this information was not available from previous studies, it was assessed by the first author (Fidalgo, 2021) using standard protocol methods (Buikstra and Ubelaker, 1994). Further detailed information and description of each variable can be consulted within the “description” and “dental grades” sheets in the excel file.</p> <p>The dataset is part of a PhD project developed at the Museu de Arqueologia e Etnologia da Universidade de São Paulo, carried by Daniel Fidalgo and advised by Veronica Wesolowski and Mark Hubbe (Fidalgo, 2021). Manuscripts have already been published using this data (Fidalgo et al., 2021a, 2021b). All research was funded by Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP), grants 17/20637-4 and 19/18289-3. It was also supported by Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) grant 001.</p>
Science, Technology & Society Eurobarometers 1993 - 2021: Trend Data Collection
<p>These files contain structured collections of Eurobarometer (EB) survey data from 1993 to 2021, focusing on European citizen’s views on science and technology (S&T). The primary aim of these data collections is to facilitate research on trends over time regarding people’s knowledge, perception and attitudes towards S&T. The European Union has collected extensive survey data from the general public over the past 50 years through its official polling instrument, the Eurobarometer. Its general goal is monitoring the state of public opinion on diverse subjects and issues throughout Europe, one of which is S&T. The data collection files, provided in the folder ‘EB_data_csv’, include data from seven different Eurobarometer surveys. These surveys were selected because their raw datasets were openly accessible through Open EU Datasets. To ensure sufficient data points for plotting specific trends over time, we included only survey questions that appeared in at least three different EB surveys. </p>

Pesticides play a critical role in maximizing yields of economically important crops and minimizing the human health threats of disease-carrying pests, but they often have collateral effects on nontarget species. We used a mesocosm study to address how the most commonly used insecticide in the USA, malathion, applied at low, ecologically relevant concentrations (20 and 110 mg/L) affects species interactions in aquatic communities. Unlike many community ecotoxicology studies, our study assessed how malathion affects both consumptive and nonconsumptive effects of predators. We also considered how the vertical distribution of predator cues and malathion (caused by potential stratification) affects species interactions. We found no evidence for vertical stratification of malathion, a result suggesting that exposure to the pesticide was uniform throughout the water column. Malathion was lethal to some primary consumers (cladocerans) at both concentrations and to top predators (dragonflies) at the highest concentration (110 mg/L). These lethal effects initiated density-mediated indirect effects in both cases. Malathion also may have decreased dragonfly foraging efficiency, resulting in increased tadpole survival (trait-mediated indirect effect), which decreased the resources used by tadpoles (periphyton). Collectively, our results show that malathion alters species interactions. However, we suggest that the degree to which pesticides affect aquatic communities will depend strongly on the species composition of communities. Therefore, the community-level consequences of pesticide exposure are likely to vary across the ecological landscape.
