SALTEx soil oxidation-reduction (redox) potential measurements from the GCE LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) between July 2016 and March 2017
SALTEx (Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment) is a field experiment designed to simulate saltwater intrusion in a tidal freshwater wetland to predict how chronic (Press) and acute (Pulse) salinization will affect this and other tidal freshwater ecosystems. The SALTEx experiment was initiated in 2012 and consists of 31 field plots , each 2.5 m on a side. There are three treatments (Press, Pulse, and Fresh) and two types of controls (with and without sides), each consisting of six replicates. The Press treatment plots receive regular (4 times each week) additions of a mixture of seawater and fresh river water. Pulse plots receive the same mixture of seawater and river water during September and October, which is historically a time of low flow in the river when natural saltwater intrusion occurs. The Fresh treatment plots receive regular additions of fresh river water. Treatment water is added during low tide to facilitate its infiltration into the soil, and all plots are inundated by astronomical tides at high tide. Response measurements include porewater chemistry, specifically concentrations of chloride, sulfate, sulfide, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ammonium-N, nitrate/nitrite-N, dissolved reactive phosphorus, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, organic nitrogen, carbon:nitrogen ratio, organic-carbon:organic-nitrogen ratio, and pH.
Soil redox potential vs. soil microbial activity and structure
<p>The dataset was collected as a part of the Carbon Action field experiment in 2021. The experiment had 100 farms testing carbon farming practices 2019-2023. These samples were from a subset of 20 farms, which were routinely sampled every year.</p> <p>I measured the following parameters</p> <ul> <li>redox potential Eh, with an ORP meter + electrode reference voltage at 50% pore filled moisture</li> <li> pH in distilled water 10:1 water:soil mixture</li> <li>VESS soil structure on the field</li> <li>CO2burst by rewetting dried soil and measuring how much CO2 was respired in 24 hours</li> </ul> <p>pH and Eh were used to calculate a rH2 hydrogen potential, which combines Eh and pH</p> <p>Background information for clay and organic matter content was determined separately</p> <p>the clay content was defined by sieving and the organic matter content by loss of ignition.</p> <p>The analysis of the results is published in Plant and Soil journal in 2023. </p> <p>Mattila, T.J., 2023. Dataset - Spatially explicit linkages between redox potential cycles and soil moisture fluctuations
<p>This repository holds data collected during three lysimeter experiments where laboratory column scale lysimeters have been subjected to different wetting/drainage cycles. The lysimeters have been filled with forest soil in the Lausanne forest characterised by the SwissMEX project </p> <p>The following dataset contains soil redox potential and soil moisture measurements that have been continuously monitored in time for different depths. Pore water samples of specific dissolved chemicals have been collected at the end of each cycle. </p> <p> </p> <p>Specifically, this dataset is composed by the following files:</p> <ul> <li> "Lysimeter_configuration.png" illustrates the lysimeter used and the sensors scheme adopted.</li> <li>"METADATA.txt" contains specific information about each recorded variable and data point collected throughout the three experiments SM-B, SM-I1 and 2.</li> <li>Pore water analysis data</li> <li>Soil moisture and tension data</li> <li>Soil redox potential data</li> </ul> <p>We thank Pascal Froidevaux for providing the lysimeter used for SM-B experiment. The authors acknowledge key funding provided by the Swiss National Science Foundation through its grant number CRSII5 186422.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p>
