N and P fertilization experiment plant phenology data for South of saddle, 1993-1994
The effects of nitrogen, phosphorus, and nitrogen+phosphorus fertilization on phenology of alpine plants was examined. This was a preliminary study to determine if the phenologies of dry meadow plants were affected by nutrient amendments, and if they were, which species responded most to the treatments. Times of emergence, senescence, and other key vegetative and reproductive "events" were recorded.
Aboveground biomass N and P content data for South of saddle, 1991.
To determine whether there are differences in the relative capacity of communities to accumulate nutrients N and P standing crops were measured following fertilization in two alpine tundra communities. Dry meadow had greater increases in aboveground N standing crop and tissue N concentration in response to N fertilization than the wet meadow. The wet meadow had a greater P accumulation response to P fertilization than the dry meadow.
N and P fertilization experiment net primary productivity data for South of saddle, 1991 - 1997.
A nutrient amendment experiment was initiated in 1990 in 2 alpine plant communities, dry and wet meadow, to determine whether N and/or P limit primary production of these communities, the plants' functional response to increased nutrients, and the community structure and composition responses to changes in nutrient availability.
Plant biomass and N content data for South of saddle, 1990 - 1991.
The data set includes biomass and nitrogen concentration data for both roots and shoots of several alpine plant species, measured at intervals through the 1990 and 1991 growing seasons. In addition, plant N pools are calculated by multiplying N concentration times biomass for both roots and shoots. Total pool sizes can be calculated by pooling the root and shoot pools. The data provide a seasonal view of the N dynamics of the alpine species tested.
Soil and microbial N data for Saddle and South of saddle, 1992.
Net nitrogen mineralization, nitrification, and microbial nitrogen were measured in dry and moist meadow plots on Niwot Ridge from early June to mid-October 1992. Dry meadow plots in the City of Boulder Watershed had been fertilized with N during the two years prior to measurements, and both dry and moist meadow plots in the Saddle were being watered and fertilized concurrent to measurements.
Soil and microbial N data for Saddle, South of saddle, North of saddle, 1993.
Gross N mineralization, respiration, and microbial biomass N were measured using soil from dry, moist, and wet meadow sites on Niwot Ridge at 3 times during the year: immediately following snowmelt, at approximately peak plant biomass, and following aboveground senescence. Microbial biomass N was measured on replicate soil cores from plots of each community, using the chloroform fumigation-extraction technique. Those cores were subsequently composited and subsamples were incubated at 15 degrees Celsius in the laboratory for measurement of CO2 evolution and 15N pool dilution-based estimations of gross mineralization.
Fine root biomass and N content data for Saddle, South of saddle, North of saddle, 1994.
Root production was estimated in dry, moist, and wet meadow communities on Niwot Ridge using a root-ingrowth core method. Columns of root-free soil were established on 1 June 1994 and were re-cored on 10 August and 23 September 1994 for measurement of fine root mass and nitrogen content.
N and P fertilization experiment plant species composition and diversity data for South of saddle, 1990 - 2000.
The effects of nitrogen, phosphorus, and nitrogen+phosphorus fertilization on alpine plant species composition and diversity in a dry and a wet meadow community were examined. A point-quadrat system was used to estimate the cover frequencies for each species in plots in the 2 communities on the south slope of Niwot Ridge. Treatments were N, P, N+P, and control. Observations were made once per year per plot over a period of several years. Diversity (Shannon-Weaver) indices were also calculated.
Soil methane flux, temperature, moisture, C, and N data for South of saddle, 1991.
Methane emissions were measured from dry and wet meadow plots established by W. Bowman in the Boulder watershed south of the Saddle. The effects of N and P fertilization were evaluated.
Soil and microbial N data for Saddle, South of saddle, and North of saddle, 1991 - 1992.
Net nitrogen mineralization, nitrification, and microbial nitrogen were measured in dry, moist, and wet meadow plots in 3 different locations on Niwot Ridge: a south-facing slope in the Boulder watershed, across the Saddle, and a north-facing slope. Measurements were made on a monthly basis while soils were unfrozen and once over the period of frozen soil conditions. Associated soil measurements included moisture, temperature, organic N and C, total P, and texture.
Aboveground net primary productivity data for saddle, south of saddle, and east of Tvan, 1982 - ongoing.
Total aboveground biomass samples were collected as part of several studies conducted on Niwot Ridge between 1982 and 2011 and were combined into a single data set that contains the name of the original investigator who collected the data, the URL of the data offered on the Niwot Ridge website, the vegetation type, location, plot ID, subsample ID, plot type, size (if known), year sample was collected, and live vascular aboveground biomass. Contributing investigators were Marilyn Walker, Bill Bowman, Tim Seastedt, Katie Suding, and Hope Humphries. Plant biomass and N content data for Saddle, South of saddle, North of saddle, 1992.
Plant biomass and nitrogen content were measured in dry, moist, and wet meadow sites on Niwot Ridge at 3 times during the year: immediately following snowmelt, at approximately peak biomass, and following aboveground senescence. Live and dead materials of both above- and belowground plant fractions were collected.
