Biomarker assessment of spatial and temporal changes in the composition of flocculent material (floc) in the subtropical wetland of the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) from May 2007 to December 2009

Flocculent material (floc) is an important energy source in wetlands. In the Florida Everglades, floc is present in both freshwater marshes and coastal environments and plays a key role in food webs and nutrient cycling. However, not much is known about its environmental dynamics, in particular its biological sources and bio-reactivity. We analysed floc samples collected from different environments in the Florida Everglades and applied biomarkers and pigment chemotaxonomy to identify spatial and seasonal differences in organic matter sources. An attempt was made to link floc composition with algal and plant productivity. Spatial differences were observed between freshwater marsh and estuarine floc. Freshwater floc receives organic matter inputs from local periphyton mats, as indicated by microbial biomarkers and chlorophyll-a estimates. At the estuarine sites, the floc is dominated by mangrove as well as diatom inputs from the marine end-member. The hydroperiod (duration and depth of inundation) at the freshwater sites influences floc organic matter preservation, where the floc at the short-hydroperiod site is more oxidised likely due to periodic dry-down conditions. Seasonal differences in floc composition were not consistent and the few that were observed are likely linked to the primary productivity of the dominant biomass (periphyton in the freshwater marshes and mangroves in the estuarine zone). Molecular evidence for hydrological transport of floc material from the freshwater marshes to the coastal fringe was also observed. With the on-going restoration of the Florida Everglades, it is important to gain a better understanding of the biogeochemical dynamics of floc, including its sources, transformations and reactivity.

2007 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Lakes Assessment dataset plus derived data and additional spatially explicit ancillary environmental data.

Lake water quality is known to be affected by local and regional drivers, including lake physical characteristics, hydrology, landscape position, land cover, land use, geology, and climate. Here, we demonstrate the utility of hypothesis testing within the landscape limnology conceptual framework using a random forest algorithm on large, national-scale, spatially explicit dataset, the United States Environmental Protection Agency 2007 National Lakes Assessment. For 1026 lakes, we tested the relative importance of water quality drivers across spatial scales, the importance of hydrologic connectivity in mediating water quality drivers, and how the importance of both spatial scale and connectivity differ across response variables for five important in-lake water quality metrics (total phosphorus, total nitrogen, dissolved organic carbon, turbidity, and conductivity).

This raises the question how biodiversity can be put on a path to recovery, the core challenge for the implementation of the CBD Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. We designed two ambitious global conservation strategies, 'Half Earth' (HE) and 'Sharing the Planet' (SP), and evaluated their ability to restore terrestrial and freshwater biodiversity and to provide nature's contributions to people (NCP), while also limiting global warming below 2 degrees and ensuring food security. We applied the integrated assessment framework IMAGE with the GLOBIO biodiversity model, using the 'Middle of the Road' Shared Socio-economic Pathway (SSP2) with its projected human population growth as baseline. We found that the HE strategy performs generally better for terrestrial biodiversity (biodiversity intactness (MSA), Area of Habitat, Living Planet Index, Red List Index) in currently still natural regions. The SP strategy yields more improvements for biodiversity in human-used areas, for freshwater biodiversity and for regulating NCP (pest control, pollination, erosion control, water quality). However, both strategies were insufficient to restore biodiversity and corresponded with considerable increases in food security risks and global temperature. Only when we combined the conservation strategies with a portfolio of 'integrated sustainability measures', including climate change mitigation and reductions of food waste and animal product consumption, our scenarios resulted in a restoration of biodiversity and NCP while keeping global warming below two degrees and food security risks below the baseline projection.</p><p><strong>Contents:</strong> This repository contains the supplementary spatial data describing the specific prioritization of conservation areas under the Half Earth (HE) and Sharing the Planet (SP) scenarios, and the resulting scenario land use and MSA data sets for the year 2050, including also a baseline (BL) scenario. All spatial data is in geotiff format at a 10 arcsecond resolution in WGS84 coordinate system. Ecosystem-based marine spatial planning assessment tool video tutorial

<p><span>Aiming at promoting the capacity building of competent authorities, scientists and consultants, a novel tool is proposed for assessing the alignment of marine spatial planning processes with ecosystem-based approach principles and to guide its operationalization.</span></p> <p><span>The EB-MSP assessment tool is developed with the ambition of providing a fit-for-purpose tool to overcome the ecosystem-based marine spatial planning implementation barriers reported by experts and managers.</span></p> <p><span>The EB-MSP assessment tool is designed to apply to any spatial plan, regardless of its stage of development: assessment of existing plans, plans in progress; or different national plans in a transboundary region.</span></p> <p><span>The EB-MSP tool can be accessed at https://aztidata.es/EB-MSP</span></p> <p><span>The EB-MSP assessment tool leads users through a step-by-step procedure for evaluating a specific plan.</span></p> <p><span>Upon first access, the user must register. Health assessment of plantations based on LiDAR canopy spatial structure parameters

<p>The Yellow River Delta (YRD) has China&#39;s largest artificial <em>Robinia pseudoacacia</em> forest, which was planted in the late 1970s and suffered extensive dieback in the 1990s. The health grade of the <em>R.pseudoacacia</em> forest (named canopy vigor grade, CVG) could be achieved by using high-resolution images and canopy vigor indicators (CVIs). However, a previous study showed that there was no significant correlation between CVG and the field-estimated aboveground biomass (AGB) of <em>R.pseudoacacia</em> forest. Therefore, this study aims to construct forest health indicators (FHIs) based on canopy spatial structure parameters extracted from LiDAR. The FHIs included Weibull_&alpha; (the scale parameter of the Weibull density function that reflects the shape of the tree canopy), VCI (vertical complexity index), sdCC (the standard deviation of canopy cover), H<sub>99</sub> (the 99th percentile height) and cvLAD (the coefficient of variation of leaf area density), and could significantly distinguish three forest health grades (FHG) (<em>p</em> &lt; 0.05). The FHG was positively correlated with forest AGB (<em>r<sub>s</sub></em> = 0.51, <em>p</em> = 0.004), and the similarity value with CVG was 63.33%. The results of this study confirmed that the FHIs can reflect both canopy vigor and tree productivity, and distinguish forest health status without prior classification information.</p>

HiP-RI: High-resolution spatial assessment of precipitation using in-situ and remote sensing data in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru

<p>The HiP-RI product was obtained from CHIRP, PERSIANN and GPM datasets, also vegetation products (NDVI-BOKU), topography (DEM SRTM) and data from 38 meteorological stations (2012-2020) were used to estimate precipitation in the Cordillera Blanca, northern sector of the Peruvian Andes. The observed data underwent quality control. A Gaussian filter, resampling and temporal homogenization at monthly scale were applied to the raster data. Subsequently, a linear regression model was built with the different datasets that served as predictors for precipitation spatialization. This allowed obtaining the best R2 values between the in situ data and those estimated with the model (HiP-RI). The results obtained were satisfactory with R2 values higher than 0.60 and an RMSE = 54%.</p>

Assessment of the spatial extent of local active noise control - dataset

<p>Experiment setup, data and supplementary scripts for the listening experiment "Assessment of the spatial extent of local active noise control" in Feb. 2023 at the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics in Graz, Austria</p> <p>A listening experiment has been conducted, trying to find the spatial extents of local active noise control (ANC). Participants were instructed to move their heads along the x-axis or rotate clock- and counterclockwise (yaw). A button had to be pressed if the perceived zone of comfort is left, and the current position was recorded. This task was repeated for different controlled bandwidths, signals and source directions. Additionally, scripts to generate the ANC filters, a brief statistical analysis and recordings at several positions for different stimuli/conditions are provided. Acoustic measures at the point of cancellation and at various other positions are further analyzed with and without ANC.</p>

Data for: Using spatial patterns of seeds and saplings to assess the prevalence of heterospecific replacements among cloud forest canopy tree species

<p><b>Questions:</b> To gain insights into the role of species-by-species replacements in cloud forest community structuring, we asked: (1) What are the effects of the spatial distribution of standing individuals on the seed rain, soil seed bank, and sapling density and survival in this cloud forest? and (2) What is the prevalence of conspecific vs<i>.</i> heterospecific replacements in the regeneration of this forest?</p> <p><b>Location:</b> Santo Tomás Teipan, Oaxaca State, southern Mexico.</p> <p><b>Methods:</b> In a 1-ha cloud forest plot we assessed seed rain, seed bank, and sapling density and survival of four canopy tree species (<i>Chiranthodendron pentadactylon</i>, <i>Cornus disciflora</i>,<i> Quercus laurina</i>, <i>Oreopanax</i> <i>xalapensis</i>). All standing individuals of these and other tree species (dbh ≥ 2.5 cm) were mapped. We used neighbourhood models to examine the spatial patterns of the three life cycle stages relative to the spatial distribution of adults. The neighbourhood effect was assessed through the Neighbourhood Index, which integrates information on size (dbh) and distance to adults. Data analysis was based on maximum likelihood and model selection procedures.</p> <p><b>Results:</b> We found large between-species differences regarding the spatial patterns of seeds and saplings. Three species showed evidence for the Janzen-Connell effect operating at the seed (<i>C. pentadactylon</i> and <i>Q. laurina</i>) or sapling (<i>O.</i> <i>xalapensis</i>) stage. We also found support for a critical role of specific microsite factors (i.e., niche differentiation) in the regeneration of two species (<i>C. pentadactylon</i> and <i>C. disciflora</i>).</p> <p><b>Conclusions:</b>  Seed and sapling distribution patterns suggest the prevalence of heterospecific replacements, and that both Janzen-Connell and niche differentiation effects contribute to this pattern. Our results largely support the notion that the prevalence of heterospecific replacements among canopy species promotes species coexistence in cloud forest.</p>

Data and code: Assessing fish-fishery dynamics from a spatially explicit metapopulation perspective reveals winners and losers in fisheries management

<ol> <li><span>Sustainable management of living resources must reconcile biodiversity conservation and socioeconomic viability of human activities. In the case of fisheries, sustainable management design is made challenging by the complex spatiotemporal interactions between fish and fisheries.</span></li> <li><span>We develop a comprehensive metapopulation framework integrating data on species life-history traits, connectivity and habitat distribution to identify priority areas for fishing regulation and assess how management impacts are spatially distributed. We trial this approach on European hake fisheries in the north-western Mediterranean, where we assess area-based management scenarios in terms of stock status and fishery productivity to prioritize areas for protection. </span></li> <li><span>Model simulations show that local fishery closures have the potential to enhance both spawning stock biomass and landings on a regional scale compared to a status quo scenario, but that improving protection is easier than increasing productivity. Moreover, the interaction between metapopulation dynamics and the redistribution of fishing effort following local closures implies that benefits and drawbacks are heterogeneously distributed in space, the former being concentrated in the proximity of the protected site. </span></li> <li><span>A network analysis shows that priority areas for protection are those with the highest connectivity (as expressed by network metrics) if the objective is to improve the spawning stock, while no significant relationship emerges between connectivity and potential for increased landings.</span></li> <li> <span><em>Synthesis and applications</em> – </span><span>Our framework provides a tool for 1) assessing area-based management measures aimed at improving fisheries outcomes in terms of both conservation and socioeconomic viability and 2) describing the spatial distribution of costs and benefits, which can help guide effective management and gain stakeholder support. Adult dispersal remains the main source of uncertainty that needs to be investigated to effectively apply our model to fisheries regulation.</span> </li> </ol>

Data from: Bringing multivariate support to multiscale codependence analysis: assessing the drivers of community structure across spatial scales

1. Multiscale codependence analysis (MCA) quantifies the joint spatial distribution of a pair of variables in order to provide a spatially-explicit assessment of their relationships to one another. For the sake of simplicity, the original definition of MCA only considered a single response variable (e.g. a single species). However, that definition would limit the application of MCA when many response variables are studied jointly, for example when one wants to study the effect of the environment on the spatial organisation of a multi-species community in an explicit manner. 2. In the present paper, we generalize MCA to multiple response variables. We conducted a simulation study to assess the statistical properties (i.e. type I error rate and statistical power) of multivariate MCA (mMCA) and found that it had honest type I error rate and sufficient statistical power for practical purposes, even with modest sample sizes. We also exemplified mMCA by applying it to two ecological data sets. 3. The simulation study confirmed the adequacy of mMCA from a statistical standpoint: it has honest type I error rates and sufficient power to be useful in practice. Using mMCA, we were able to detect variation in fish community structure along the Doubs River (in France), which was associated with large spatial structures in the variation of physical and chemical variables related to water quality. Also, mMCA usefully described the spatial variation of an Oribatid mite community structure associated with a gradient of water content superimposed on various smaller-scale spatial features associated with vegetation cover in the peat blanket surrounding Lac Geai (in Québec, Canada). 4. In addition to demonstrating the soundness of mMCA in theory and practice, we further discuss the strengths and assumptions of mMCA and describe other potential scenarios where it would be helpful to biologists interested in assessing influence of environmental conditions on community structure in a spatially-explicit way.

Data from: Assessing spatial patterns of soil erosion in a high‐latitude rangeland

<p>High‐latitude areas are experiencing rapid change: we therefore need a better understanding of the processes controlling soil erosion in these environments. We used a spatiotemporal approach to investigate soil erosion in Svalbarðstunga, Iceland (66° N, 15° W), a degraded rangeland. We used three complementary datasets: 1) high‐resolution UAV imagery collected from 12 sites (total area ~0.75 km<sup>2</sup>); 2) historical imagery of the same sites; and 3) a simple, spatially‐explicit cellular automata model. Sites were located along a gradient of increasing altitude and distance from the sea, and varied in erosion severity (5–47% eroded). We found that there was no simple relationship between location along the environmental gradient and the spatial characteristics of erosion. Patch‐size frequency distributions lacked a characteristic scale of variation, but followed a power‐law distribution on five of the 12 sites. Present total eroded area is poorly related to current, site‐scale levels of environmental stress, but the number of small erosion patches did reflect site‐level stress. Small (&lt; 25 m<sup>2</sup>) erosion patches clustered near large patches. The model results suggested that the large‐scale patterns observed likely arise from strong, local interactions, which mean that erosion spreads from degraded areas. Our findings suggest that contemporary erosion patterns reflect historical stresses, as well as current environmental conditions. The importance of abiotic processes to the growth of large erosion patches and their relative insensitivity to current environmental conditions makes it likely that the total eroded area will continue to increase, despite a warming climate and reducing levels of grazing pressure.</p>

Data from a flexible framework to assess patterns and drivers of beta diversity across spatial scales

<p><span>The patterns and underlying ecological (e.g., environmental filtering) and </span><span>historical</span><span> (e.g., priority effects) drivers of beta diversity are scale-dependent but generally difficult to distinguish</span> <span>and rarely explored with a sufficiently broad range of spatial scales. We propose a general scale-explicit framework to assess and contrast the patterns and drivers of beta diversity across hierarchical spatial scales ranging from within fine-scale ecoregion-scale to among broad-scale ecoregion-scale. By applying this framework to aquatic macroinvertebrate datasets, we show that beta diversity generally increases with spatial extent.</span> <span>With an increasing spatial extent, beta diversity shifts from being more influenced by environmental filtering to being more influenced by recent historical factors (i.e., past beta diversity). Such recent historical effects may result from past environmental variation rather than priority effects.</span><span> We also found that the small-scale and large-scale environmental drivers act differently on beta diversity across spatial extents. Our research reveals a complex spatial-scale dependence in beta diversity patterns and their drivers and provides a more holistic understanding of beta diversity dynamics. Our framework represents a flexible way to unravel the internal structure of beta diversity across scales by partitioning of entire beta diversity variation into scale-specific differences and may have broad application in community ecology, landscape planning and biodiversity conservation.</span></p>
