Long-term mid-marsh grasshopper abundance and species diversity at eight GCE-LTER sampling sites

Grasshopper abundance and species diversity were investigated at eight sampling sites within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER study area during July or August from 2000 to 2023. Visual surveys were conducted along 8-10 2m by 10m transects randomly allocated within the mid-marsh zone at each site. All grasshoppers observed within each transect were counted and identified to species, if possible. These surveys were conducted as part of the GCE invertebrate monitoring program, and are performed annually to assess long-term changes in relative species abundances across the GCE study area.

Species richness and abundance of benthic infauna found in lagoons along the Beaufort Sea Coast, 2018-ongoing

Quantitative benthic invertebrate surveys can be used to characterize and compare benthic community structure of nearshore Arctic lagoon systems. The Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems Long Term Ecological Research (BLE LTER) Core Program employs spatial sampling to compare benthic community structure among lagoon systems along the Alaskan Beaufort Sea coast and temporal sampling to track benthic community structure across the three major seasons of the Arctic (ice cover, break up, and open water). Ponar grabs, hollow-core drills (SIPRE corer), and 0.5 mm sieves are employed to quantitatively sample meiobenthic and macrobenthic communities during all three Arctic seasons. All invertebrate specimens are identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible, preserved in 100% ethanol, and enumerated. Wet weights in ethanol are also recorded.

Native and invasive species abundance distributions in lakes at North Temperate Lakes LTER 1979-2010

These data were compiled from multiple sources. We collated data on the abundance or density of aquatic invasive and native species sampled in more than 20 sites using the same methods. To control for sampling methodology and allow comparisons among native and invasive species, we only included data where both invasive and native species from a taxonomic group were sampled using the same methods across multiple sites. Exceptions were made to include rusty crayfish (Orconectes rusticus) in its native range and zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) data.

Bee species abundance and composition in three ecosystem types at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, USA

This study was designed to examine community- or population-level fluctuations in bee species at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, both intra- and inter-annually. From 2002 to 2019, passive funnel traps were used to collect bees at three sites, each representing a different ecosystem type of the southwestern U.S. (Plains grassland, Chihuahuan Desert grassland, and Chihuahuan Desert shrubland). Bees were collected during each month from March through October, and were identified to species by taxonomic experts.

Species-level estimated abundances and zero counts of nighttime collected female mosquitoes 2014 - 2022 (Derived from NEON Mosquitoes sampled from CO2 traps (DP1.10043.001, RELEASE-2024))

This Level 2 data package contains species level estimated abundances, including zero counts, and estimated mean number of female mosquitoes per trap derived from the NEON Mosquitoes sampled from CO2 traps (DP1.10043.001), RELEASE-2024 Level 0 data (https://doi.org/10.48443/3cyq-6v47). The data set includes mosquito records of traps collecting mosquito samples at night, for up to 24 trap hours, across a total of 20 terrestrial core and 27 terrestrial gradient sites from 2014 to 2022. To ensure high confidence in abundance estimates, records were only included when at least 90% of collected individuals were identified to sex, and 90% of female specimens were identified to species. Information across multiple QC/QA fields within the NEON mosquito data was evaluated to identify and exclude records where confidence in estimated abundances may have been compromised. Species level zero counts were added for all species collected at least once within the sampling year and trap location. Additionally, species level zero counts were included for trap events where only male mosquitoes had been collected or where QC/QA remarks indicated traps were inactive due to cold temperatures. The data set provides an analysis ready time series of estimated abundances across NEON sites and plots. An R Markdown file that contains descriptions of the QC/QA and data filtering steps along with annotated code, as well as data tables used to filter active and inactive trap events based on QC/QA fields, are published with the data package. Diatom Species Abundance Data from LTER Caribbean Karstic Region (CKR) study (FCE) in Yucatan, Belize and Jamaica during 2006, 2007, 2008

Several studies have shown that within the Florida Coastal Everglades, periphyton mat properties, (incuding biomass, nutrient and organic content, and community composition) vary predictably in response to water quality.The Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) wetland system is very similar with respect to climate, geology, hydrology and vegetation, to wetlands found in Jamaica, the Yucatan region of Mexico and parts of Belize. This study was therefore conducted to ascertain (i) the level of similarity between the periphyton diatom communities from karstic wetland sites in Belize, Mexico, Jamaica and comparable sites within the FCE, (ii) the relationship between periphyton biomass, TP levels and diatom community composition at these sites, and (iii) the feasibility of employing diatoms as indicators of water quality at these sites, using models relating diatom community composition to water quality from comparable sites within the FCE. Multiple wetland sites in Jamaica, the Yucatan region of Mexico and parts of Belize were visited between 2006 and 2008, during wet and dry seasons. At each site physico-chemical data were collected along with periphyton samples. The periphyton samples were processed in accordance with standard methods to obtain biomass, organic content and TP measures, and to identify and enumerate diatom and soft algae species. Various aspects of the diatom communities were then compared to previously compiled data on diatom communities from various parts of the FCE. SIMI analysis was used to determine the level of similarity between the systems and Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling was used to identify relationships between diatom communities and water quality.

The effects of changing vegetative composition on the abundance, species diversity and activity of birds at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1997

This data package contains bird abundance data collected in plots that have had various plant functional groups or species experimentally removed at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, USA. This data was collected in an effort to distinguish the differential effects of plant community biomass, plant community functional groups, and biodiversity within functional groups on plant community function, including effects on animals. To make these distinctions, treatments were established by the selective removal of plant species or functional groups within experimental plots. There are eight treatments: control (C, no removals); four functional group removal treatments (PG, perennial grass removed; S, shrubs removed; SSh, subshrubs removed; Succ, succulents removed), and three species richness manipulation treatments. Richness manipulations included a simplified treatment (Simp), where only the single most abundant species of each growth form is preserved and all other species in the growth form are removed, a reduced‐Larrea treatment (rL), where the Larrea is assumed to be the dominant and is removed while minority components remain, and a reduced-Prosopsis treatment (rP), where Prosopis rather than Larrea is removed as the shrub dominant. Following treatments, bird abundance and habitat preference data was collected in 1997. This data set consists of plot number, treatment type, and time of bird presence by taxa and by habitat and behavior. This study is complete.

Habitat characteristics and species abundances of reptiles in northern Israel

<p>Data and auxiliary information collected in a field survey of reptile assemblages in northern Israel, conducted in the spring seasons from 2016 to 2018. Data were collected in 272 Mediterranean woodland and shrubland sites, exposed to different types of human land uses. Sites are located along a geo-climatic gradient of 120 km, with elevations between 50 m and 1,570 m above sea level. Species data contains the abundances of 15 lizards, six snakes and one tortoise. These data describe the annual estimates of density of wetland fish (all species combined) and the species richness (as the number of unique species) in six main channel and six tidal creek locations at four coastal wetlands as part of the SONGS San Dieguito Wetland Restoration monitoring program to track long-term patterns in species abundance and diversity. This study began in 2012 in the San Dieguito Wetland in San Diego County, CA, Carpinteria Salt Marsh in Santa Barbara County, CA, and Mugu Lagoon in Ventura County, CA. Tijuana Estuary in San Diego County was added in 2013. Beginning in 2024, Tijuana Estuary was replaced with Los Penasquitos Lagoon in San Diego County, CA.

Temporal and spatial changes of the abundance and species composition of phytoplankton in the California Current from samples collected aboard CalCOFI cruises from summer 1996 through 2022.

The abundances of 385 taxonomic categories of phytoplankton (species where possible) are presented for the 26.5 -year period beginning with summer, 1996 and concluding with autumn 2022. There were four cruises per year. Samples were water samples collected from the second depth, which was designed to sample the mixed layer when a mixed layer existed, generally between 5m - 15m. Before counting, samples from single stations were pooled into four regions: NE (northern inshore), SE (southern inshore), Alley (the region of the California Current) and Offshore (Central Pacific). Pooled samples were enumerated with an inverted microscope. The species data are presented by seven major taxonomic categories followed by the sums of those major taxa. The species codes are defined in the table metadata.
