Carbon Isotope and Ring Width Measurements from Tree Rings of Selected Canopy Species at Six Sites in the Eastern United States

Forest Water Use Efficiency (WUE) is defined as the ratio of carbon uptake per unit water vapor loss via transpiration. Micrometeorological measurements suggest that forest WUE has dramatically increased over the last two decades, in excess of what would be expected from increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations. Coinciding with observed trends in forest WUE have been marked decreases in acid deposition throughout much of North America and Europe. There is evidence that acid deposition may impact forest WUE, either by altering the availability of nutrients in forest soils or by directly affecting foliar physiology. Changes in WUE could also lead to changes in stream discharge from forested catchments. The hypothesized response of forests to changing levels of acid deposition is not currently considered in the land surface components of global climate models (GCMs). Since carbon dioxide and water vapor are the two most important greenhouse gases, it is vital to accurately model their land-atmosphere exchange. This research uses a catchment-based approach to investigate the effects of changing acid deposition on forest WUE. Tree ring carbon isotopes reconstruct historical WUE time series within six catchments that have been differentially impacted by acid deposition due to distinctions between their underlying bedrock mineralogy and geological histories. The research also capitalizes on experimental treatments that have altered soil biogeochemistry in paired catchment designs (Bear Brook, ME; Hubbard Brook, NH; and Fernow Experimental Forest, WV). Additional watersheds that vary in underlying bedrock chemistry are also used in this research to examine tree-ring WUE time series as natural experiments along a base-cation gradient. These watersheds include Sleepers River, VT; Hubbard Brook, NH; Cone Pond Watershed, NH; and Shenandoah National Park, VA.

Functional Traits of Selected Tree Species in Harvard Forest, New Hampshire, and Southern Quebec 2015

Increasing evidence suggests that species' phenological responses may predict their performance with warming, but this work has generally ignored whether phenology is correlated with other traits known to drive plant performance. This is perhaps surprising given that interest in functional traits has also increased in recent decades, yet within the functional traits literature there has been an equally limited consideration of phenology, perhaps because robustly estimating it is time-intensive, and simple field estimates will show extreme variation across sites of different latitudes and climate regimes. Here we collected a suite of trait data on the same species for which we collected phenological data (see related dataset HF314, Leaf and Flower Phenology of Woody Plant Species at Harvard Forest and Southern Quebec 2015) to help address this gap. We focused on populations of trees in temperate forests in the Northeast face, which face different environmental conditions across their ranges. This project measured functional traits of trees at two to four sites, to provide a foundation for studies on the relationship between range shift, phenology, and functional traits.

CGP01 Gall-insect densities on selected plant species in watersheds with different fire frequencies

Long-term monitoring of gall-insect densities on Solidago canadensis, Vernonia baldwinii, and Ceanothus herbaceous. Gall abundances are censused in watersheds burned at one- to twenty- year intervals to asses the role of fire frequency and time since fire on gall-insect population dynamics. The data sets contain the following: Watershed fire frequency, number of growing seasons since last fire, plant species, number of galled stems, and number of censused stems. Censuses conducted for the 1989-1996 growing seasons except 1992 and 1994, next scheduled census is fall 1997.

Eradication via destratification: whole-lake mixing to selectively remove rainbow smelt, a cold-water invasive species.

Rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) are an invasive species associated with several negative changes to lake ecosystems in northern Wisconsin. We combined empirically based bioenergetics models with empirically based hydrodynamic models to assess lake destratification as a potential rainbow smelt eradication method. The dataset reported here is the otolith data from 20 age 1plus individuals.

PPH01 Phenology of selected plant species at Konza Prairie

Twenty-nine selected species of grasses, forbs, and woody vegetation characteristic of a variety of habitats on Konza Prairie are used for phenological measurements. These species are observed weekly for the entire growing season and changes in their phenological states are recorded. The following phenological states are used for this survey: (1) initiation of growth, (2) first anthesis, (3) duration of anthesis, (4) fruits mature, (5) leaves more than 90% dry.

Data from: "Imprinted habitat selection varies across dispersal phases in a raptor species"

<p><span><span>Natal Habitat Preference Induction (NHPI) plays a significant role in shaping settlement decisions in dispersive animals. Despite its importance, limited research has explored how NHPI varies during natal dispersal phases and across different types of natal habitats. In this study, we examined NHPI in 77 GPS-tagged juvenile red kites <em>(Milvus milvus</em>) originating from different natal habitats along an elevational gradient in Switzerland. We applied individual-based step selection analysis to investigate habitat selection from independence to settlement. We found that during the prospecting phase, individuals predominantly selected habitats similar to their natal environments. However, this pattern changed in the settlement phase: individuals fledged from habitats at higher elevations or closer to urban areas mostly avoided similar habitats (negative NHPI), while those from areas with more farmlands or pastures (combined with forests) showed a preference for similar habitats (positive NHPI). Moreover, the magnitude and individual variation in NHPI differed depending on the natal habitat types from which individuals originated. These findings highlight that strength, direction, and individual variation in NHPI differ between natal habitat types and dispersal phases. Natal habitats therefore can have pervasive legacy effects on subsequent habitat selection, likely affecting population and range dynamics.</span></span></p>

Data for: Pollinator and habitat-mediated selection as potential contributors to ecological speciation in two closely related species

<p>In ecological speciation, incipient species diverge due to natural selection that is ecologically based. In flowering plants, different pollinators could mediate that selection (pollinator-mediated divergent selection) or other features of the environment that differ between habitats of two species could do so (environment-mediated divergent selection). Although these mechanisms are well understood, they have received little rigorous testing, as few studies of divergent selection across sites of closely related species include both floral traits that influence pollination and vegetative traits that influence survival. This study employed common gardens in sites of the two parental species and a hybrid site, each containing advanced generation hybrids along with the parental species, to test these forms of ecological speciation in plants of the genus <em>Ipomopsis</em>. Three vegetative traits (specific leaf area, leaf trichomes, and photosynthetic water-use efficiency) and five floral traits (corolla length and width, anther insertion, petal color, nectar production) were analyzed for impacts on fitness components (survival to flowering and seeds per flower, respectively). These traits exhibited strong clines across the elevational gradient in the hybrid zone, with narrower clines in theory reflecting stronger selection or higher genetic variance. Plants with long corollas and inserted anthers had higher seeds per flower at the <em>I. tenuituba </em>site, whereas selection favored the reverse condition at the <em>I. aggregata</em> site, a signature of divergent selection. In contrast, no divergent selection due to variation in survival was detected on any vegetative trait. Selection within the hybrid zone most closely resembled selection within the <em>I. aggregata</em> site. Across traits, the strength of divergent selection was not significantly correlated with width of the cline, which was better predicted by evolvability (standardized genetic variance). These results support the role of pollinator-mediated divergent selection in ecological speciation and illustrate the importance of genetic variance in determining divergence across hybrid zones.</p>

Code and data for Bayesian joint species distribution model selection for community-level prediction

<p>Code and data for reproducing the analysis in the manuscript "Bayesian joint species distribution model selection for community-level prediction."  Provided data include percent cover observations for 39 modeled vascular plant species within boreal forest understory communities and environmental model covariates. R code is provided to generate model inputs, apply alternative models, generate out-of-sample predictions, and calculate associated community and species log scores and alternative model evaluation metrics. Further, R source code is provided to implement the multinomial joint species distribution model defined in the manuscript. Details on the data, its processing, and the alternative model definitions and structure can be found in the main text of the manuscript.  Provided data are currently being used in ongoing analyses and coordination with authors may be warranted to avoid duplicate publication. Potential users are encouraged to consider collaboration with authors when useful and appropriate. Misinterpretation of data may occur if used outside the context of the original analysis. Selection shapes the genomic landscape of introgressed ancestry in a pair of sympatric sea urchin species

<p>A growing number of recent studies have demonstrated that introgression is common across the tree of life. However, we still have a limited understanding of the fate and fitness consequence of introgressed variation at the whole-genome scale across diverse taxonomic groups. Here, we implemented a phylogenetic hidden Markov model to identify and characterize introgressed genomic regions in a pair of well-diverged, non-sister sea urchin species: <em>Strongylocentrotus</em> <em>pallidus</em> and <em>S. droebachiensis</em>. Despite the old age of introgression, a sizable fraction of the genome (1% - 5%) exhibited introgressed ancestry, including numerous genes showing signals of historical positive selection that may represent cases of adaptive introgression. One striking result was the overrepresentation of hyalin genes in the identified introgressed regions despite observing considerable overall evidence of selection against introgression. There was a negative correlation between introgression and chromosome gene density, and two chromosomes were observed with considerably reduced introgression. Relative to the non-introgressed genome-wide background, introgressed regions had significantly reduced nucleotide divergence (<em>d</em><sub>XY</sub>) and overlapped fewer protein-coding genes, coding bases, and genes with a history of positive selection. Additionally, genes residing within introgressed regions showed slower rates of evolution (<em>d</em><sub>N</sub>, <em>d</em><sub>S</sub>, <em>d</em><sub>N</sub>/<em>d</em><sub>S</sub>) than random samples of genes without introgressed ancestry. Overall, our findings are consistent with widespread selection against introgressed ancestry across the genome and suggest that slowly evolving, low-divergence genomic regions are more likely to move between species and avoid negative selection following hybridization and introgression.</p>
