Sperm quality parameters and sex steroid concentrations in male and female meagre (Argyrosomus regius) held under constant or cycling temperatures
<p>The dataset contains excel files with sperm quality parameters measured with Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis (CASA), plasma sex steroids (testosterone, 11-ketotestosterone, estradiol and 17a,20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one) measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), oocyte diameters and egg fecundity and % fertilisation data in the meagre <em>Argyrosomus regius</em> held under either attenuated seasonal water temperature (16.4 to 19.6ºC) or relatively constant water temperature (19.4 ± 0.6ºC).</p>

Post-copulatory sexual selection is associated with sperm aggregate quality in Peromyscus mice
<p>In some species, sperm form coordinated groups that are hypothesized to improve their swimming performance in competitive contexts or to navigate through the viscous fluids of the female reproductive tract. Here we investigate sperm aggregation across closely-related species of <i>Peromyscus </i>mice that naturally vary by mating system to test the predictions that sperm aggregates (1) are faster than solitary sperm in species that females mate multiply to aid cells in sperm competition, and (2) outperform solitary sperm cells in viscous environments. We find significant variation in the size of sperm aggregates, which negatively associates with relative testis mass, a proxy for sperm competition risk, suggesting that post-copulatory sexual selection has a stabilizing effect on sperm group size. Moreover, our results show that sperm aggregates are faster than solitary sperm in some, but not all, species, and this can vary by fluid viscosity. Of the two species that produce the largest and most frequent groups, we find that sperm aggregates from the promiscuous <i>P. maniculatus</i> are faster than solitary sperm in every experimentally viscous environment but aggregation provides no such kinematic advantage under these same conditions for the monogamous <i>P. polionotus</i>. The reduced performance of <i>P. polionotus</i> aggregates is associated with less efficient aggregate geometry and the inclusion of immotile or morphological abnormal sperm. Our cross-species comparison yields insight into the evolution of sperm social behaviors, provides evidence of extensive variation in the <i>Peromyscus</i> lineage, and reveals that differences in sperm aggregate quality associate with post-copulatory sexual selection.</p>

The widespread and locally massive introgression of Y chromosomes of the eastern house mouse (<i>Mus musculus musculus</i>) into the range of the western subspecies (<i>M. m. domesticus</i>) in Central Europe calls for an explanation of its underlying mechanisms. Given the paternal inheritance pattern, obvious candidates for traits mediating the introgression are characters associated with sperm quantity and quality. We can also expect traits such as size, aggression, or the length of generation cycles to facilitate the spread. We have created two consomic strains carrying the non-recombining region of the Y chromosome of the opposite subspecies, allowing us to study introgression in both directions, something impossible in nature due to the unidirectionality of introgression. We analysed several traits potentially related to male fitness. Transmission of the <i>domesticus</i> Y onto the <i>musculus</i> background had negative effects on all studied traits. Likewise , <i>domesticus</i> males possessing the <i>musculus</i> Y had, on average, smaller body and testes and lower sperm count than the parental strain. However, the same consomic males tended to produce less dissociated sperm heads, to win more dyadic encounters, and to have shorter generation cycles than pure <i>domesticus</i> males. These data suggest the <i>domesticus</i> Y is disadvantageous on the <i>musculus</i> background while introgression in the opposite direction can confer a recognizable, though not always significant, selective advantage. Our results are thus congruent with the unidirectional <i>musculus</i>→domesticus Y chromosome introgression in Central Europe. In addition to some previous studies, they show this to be a multifaceted phenomenon demanding a multidisciplinary approach.
Data from: Socially cued seminal fluid gene expression mediates responses in ejaculate quality to sperm competition risk
There is considerable evidence that males will increase the number of sperm ejaculated in response to sperm competition risk. However, whether they have the capacity to adjust seminal fluid components of the ejaculate has received less attention. Male crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus) have been shown to adjust the viability of sperm in their ejaculate in response to sperm competition risk. Here we show that socially mediated plasticity in sperm viability is probably due, at least in part, to male adjustments in the protein composition of the seminal fluid. Seven seminal fluid protein genes were found to have an increased expression in males exposed to rival calls. Increased expression of these genes was correlated with increased sperm viability in whole ejaculates, and gene knockdown confirmed that at least one of these proteins promotes sperm viability. Our results lend support for recent theoretical models that predict complex responses in male allocation to seminal fluid composition in response to sperm competition risk.
