Spreadsheet Debugging: The Perils of Tool Over-reliance

Spreadsheets are widely used in organizations for various purposes such as data aggregation, reporting and decision-making. Since spreadsheets, like other types of software, can contain faulty formulas, it is important to provide developers with appropriate methods to find and fix such faults. Recently, various heuristic and statistics-based fault identification methods were proposed, which point developers to potentially faulty parts of the spreadsheets. Due to their heuristic nature, these methods might, however, miss some faults. As a result, if spreadsheet developers rely too strongly on these methods, they might not pay sufficient attention to problems that are not pinpointed by the methods. In this research, we are the first to study this potential problem of over-reliance in spreadsheet debugging, which may lead to limited debugging effectiveness. We report the outcome of a controlled experiment where 59 participants were tasked to find faulty formulas in a given spreadsheet with and without support of a novel spreadsheet debugging tool.

The provided dataset contains detailed results of the study, the spreadsheet that was used for the study, and other supporting materials.

Corresponding spreadsheet to the Paper 'An intersectional approach to analyse gender productivity and open access: a bibliometric analysis of the Italian National Research Council' submitted to the Scientometric journal by Roberta Ruggieri, Fabrizio Pecoraro and Daniela Luzi from National Research Council, Italy.

Gender equality and Open Access (OA) are priorities within the European Research Area (ERA) and cross-cutting issues in European research program H2020. Gender and openness are also key elements of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). However, despite the common underlying targets of fostering an inclusive, transparent and sustainable research environment, both issues are analysed as independent, unrelated topics.
This paper represents a first exploration of the inter-linkages between gender and OA analysing the scientific production of researchers of the Italian National Research Council under a gender perspective integrated with the different OA publications modes. A bibliometric analysis was carried out for articles published in the period 2016-2018 and retrieved from the Web of Science. Results are presented constantly analysing CNR scientific production in relation to gender, disciplinary fields and OA publication modes. These variables are also used when analysing articles that receive financial support.
Our results indicate that gender disparities in scientific production still persist in particularly in STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), while in medical and agricultural sciences the gender gap is the closest to parity. A positive dynamic toward OA publishing and women scientific production is shown when open disciplines with well-established practices are related to articles supported by funds. A slightly higher women propensity toward OA is shown when considering Gold OA,OA or authorships with women in the first and last article by-line position. Moreover, the prevalence of Italian funded articles with women’s contributions published in Gold OA journals seems to confirm this tendency, especially if considering the week enforcement of the Italian OA policies.

Supplementary BAM spreadsheet

National accounting matrices (NAM) perfectly describe the economic structure of a national economy, summarizing the whole process of generation of primary income and its distribution among the different institutional sectors of the economy. It is not just a way to represent the main economic statistics of an economy, but it also serves as the basis for most macroeconomic modelling efforts. The business accounting matrix (BAM) presents the most relevant information for the firm in a similar way, adapted to the descriptive potential of financial accounting, what we believe can be useful both for economic modellers and for decision makers at the firm level.

This spreadsheet helps to trace how each of the cells of the BAM are calculated. It includes a table in which the cells of the BAM incorporate a description of their content. It also contains the example of a complete BAM (SBAM) that can be used the simulation of changes in demand and other input-output related models. This material allows researchers having the financial accounts of a firm available, to immediately calculate a BAM. They can also easily adapt our proposal to their convenience.

Scan files, 3D reconstructions, data spreadsheet and supplementary files for Heterochrony and parallel evolution of echinoderm, hemichordate and cephalochordate internal bars

Deuterostomes comprise three phyla with radically different body plans. Phylogenetic bracketing of the living deuterostome clades suggests the latest common ancestor of echinoderms, hemichordates and chordates was a bilaterally symmetrical worm with pharyngeal openings, with these characters lost in echinoderms. Early fossil echinoderms with pharyngeal openings have been described, but their interpretation is highly controversial. Here, we critically evaluate the evidence for pharyngeal structures (gill bars) in the extinct stylophoran echinoderms Lagynocystis pyramidalis and Jaekelocarpus oklahomensis using virtual models based on high-resolution X-ray tomography scans of three-dimensionally preserved fossil specimens. Multivariate analyses of the size, spacing and arrangement of the internal bars in these fossils indicate they are substantially more similar to gill bars in modern enteropneust hemichordates and cephalochordates than to other internal bar-like structures in fossil blastozoan echinoderms. The close similarity between the internal bars of the stylophorans L. pyramidalis and J. oklahomensis and the gill bars of extant chordates and hemichordates is strong evidence for their homology. Differences between these internal bars and bar-like elements of the respiratory systems in blastozoans suggest these structures might have arisen through parallel evolution across deuterostomes, perhaps underpinned by a common developmental genetic mechanism.
