Carbon and nitrogen content and stable isotope compositions from biota samples from lagoon sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2018-ongoing

Stable isotopic composition can be used to differentiate between predominantly marine and terrestrial food sources in nearshore marine food webs. The Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER (BLE LTER) Core Program employs spatial and temporal sampling regimes to track shifts in diet, both seasonally (ice cover, ice break-up, and open water), and spatially among lagoons along the Alaskan Beaufort Sea coast. Ice coring, net tows, ponar grabs, and trawls are employed to collect organisms associated with the sea-ice interface, the water column, and the benthos respectively. Tissues are analyzed for stable isotopic composition as well as organic carbon and nitrogen content.

Water stable isotopes for streams and precipitation samples in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, 2014-2023

Water samples have been collected for analysis of water stable isotopes (O18/16 and H2/H1) at different locations in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest and over different periods since 2014 in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest. The database includes: 1) grab samples collected over the stream network of the Andrews Forest on multiple sampling campaigns during various flow conditions. In each of the campaigns, the samples were collected at approximately 50–100-meter intervals in 1st–5th order streams across the network; 2) water samples collected in the Andrews Forest every 1–3 weeks between 2014 and 2018 in streams (Lookout Creek, Mack Creek, McRae Creek, WS01, WS02, WS07, and WS08) and bulk precipitation from benchmark meteorological stations (PRIMET, MACK, and H15MET) between 2014 and 2023; 3) stream and precipitation samples collected in the Andrews Forest at high temporal resolution during discrete storm events at Mack Creek in 2015; and 4) weekly grab samples from Lookout Creek and selected tributaries.

Primary producer biomarker profiles of bulk carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (SI), compound specific stable isotopes of carbon in essential amino acids (CSIA-EAA) and their fatty acid (FA) collected from the Beaufort Sea coastal lagoons,2021-2024

Within Stefansson Sound in Prudhoe Bay, AK various organic matter sources were collected to determine multiple biomarker baseline profiles (i.e., bulk carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (SI), compound specific stable isotopes of carbon in essential amino acids (CSIA-EAA), fatty acids (FA)). Some organic matter sources were collected from Elson lagoon in Utqiaġvik, AK and Kaktovik and Jago lagoons in Kaktovik, AK to supplement low sample sizes in some organic matter source groups. Kelp, red algae, terrestrial plants, phytoplankton, and ice algae were collected in 2024 with some supplement samples collected in 2021 - 2023. Stable isotope values of δ13C and δ15N are reported as “del_13c” and “del_15n”, respectively. Individual fatty acids are reported as the percent relative to total fatty acids for 23 fatty acids: C11:0, C12:0, C14:0, C15:1, C15:0, C16:0, C16:1n7, C17:0, C17:1, C18:0, C18:1n9 trans, C18:2n6 cis, C18:1n7, C18:3n3, C20:0, C18:3n6, C20:4n6, C21:0, C22:0, C22:1n9, C23:0, C24:0, C22:6n3. Stable isotope values of δ13C are reported in the following essential amino acids: Valine (Val), Leucine (Leu), iLeu (isoleucine), Methionine (Met), Phenylalanine (Phe). Additionally, we used ice algal diatoms collected in the Arctic (landfast ice near Utqiaġvik, Alaska) and cultured in a laboratory setting at the University of Alaska Fairbanks to compare the CSIA-EAA fingerprints of field (composites) ice algal samples and isolate diatoms samples.

Environmental, Taxonomic, and Stable Isotope Data from Aquatic Insects sampled from Beaver-Engineered Headwater Streams (Adirondack Park, NY; 2024).

This data package contains environmental and biological data from a field study examining aquatic insect assemblage composition and basal resource use in beaver-engineered headwater streams in Adirondack Park, New York. Data was collected from six streams across two watersheds; the Oswegatchie River Watershed and Upper Hudson River Watershed. Three streams were sampled within the Oswegatchie River Watershed; East Creek, Sucker Brook, and Chair Rock Creek located near the Cranberry Lake Biological Station in St. Lawrence County. Three streams were sampled from the Upper Hudson River Watershed; Big Sucker Brook, Little Sucker Brook, and Panther Brook located near SUNY ESF’s Newcomb Campus in Essex County. Site conditions were characterized using densiometer measurements of canopy cover, visual assessments of substrate composition, and river discharge measurements collected with an OTT MF Pro flow meter. Aquatic insect assemblages were sampled using multihabitat active sampling and Hester–Dendy and leaf-bag passive samplers, with specimens identified to genus and assigned to functional feeding groups. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were analyzed for a subset of insect taxa and three basal resource pools; coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM), fine particulate organic matter (FPOM), and periphytic algae. The Bayesian mixing model MixSIAR was used to estimate the proportional contribution of these primary sources to aquatic insect biomass. All data was collected between June and August 2024.

Soil and foliar carbon and nitrogen content and stable isotope ratios from rainfall manipulation experiments at the Jornada Basin LTER, 2011-2020

As rainfall extremes are expected to increase in novel magnitude and frequency, especially in dryland regions, we asked how prolonged and directional shifts to water availability may affect ecosystem carbon and nitrogen dynamics. This data set includes foliar and soil carbon and nitrogen stable isotope and concentration data collected from multiple long-term rainfall manipulation experiments at the Jornada Basin LTER. Datasets also include rainfall data adjusted to rainfall manipulation intensities. Collection dates range from 5 to 14 years since the onset of experimental treatments. The primary plant species targeted for this study were the dominant grass, Bouteloua eriopoda, and the dominant shrub, Prosopis glandulosa.

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This dataset contains particulate organic carbon and particulate organic nitrogen concentrations and stable isotope composition (delta 13C and delta 15N) sampled during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE) Leg 1-3. Water samples were collected from the underway seawater supply every 3 hours, filtered onto pre-combusted glass fibre filters, acidified to remove inorganic compounds and analysed for both elements on the same filter using an elemental analyser. Seawater stable isotope sample measurements from the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE)

<p><strong>Dataset abstract</strong></p> <p>This data set contains oxygen and hydrogen isotope measurements from discrete seawater samples that were collected in the Southern Ocean (south of 30 deg S) during the Antarctic Circumnavigation Expedition (ACE). 637 samples were collected during the period December 24th, 2016 and March 18th, 2017 in the Southern Ocean from the surface ocean using the ship&#39;s underway line (UW; 338 samples) and in vertical profiles using Niskin bottles mounted on the CTD rosette (287 samples). A few additional samples were collected from a parallel cast with a trace-metal rosette, with a bucket, and from the surface of a tabular iceberg. All samples were analyzed for their oxygen isotopic composition (reported as permille deviation of the oxygen-18 to oxygen-16 ratio from VSMOW2: DEL18O) and a few samples (80) from the Pacific sector were analyzed for their hydrogen isotopic composition (reported as permille deviation of the hydrogen to deuterium ratio from VSMOW2: DELD) by mass spectrometry at the British Geological Survey. Seawater dissolved chromium concentration, redox speciation, and stable isotope composition in the North Pacific Ocean

<p>Dissolved seawater chromium concentrations, redox speciation, and stable isotope composition were measured on samples collected in the North Pacific Ocean. Samples were collected over diel cycles (2 for stations 1-5, 1 for station 6) on board the RV Kilo Moana cruise KM1713 from Seward Alaska to Honolulu Hawai&rsquo;i. Sampling stations spanned the subarctic North Pacific (stations 1 &amp; 2), the dynamic subarctic-subtropical convergence zone (stations 3 and 4) and the subtropical North Pacific (stations 5 and 6). Chromium was enriched from filtered samples by Mg(OH)<sub>2</sub> co-precipitation and analyzed by MC-ICP-MS using either isotope dilution (Cr redox speciation) or double spike methodology.</p>

Sulfate Concentrations and Sulfur Stable Isotope Ratios in Surface Water from the Marlborough and Waipara Winegrowing Regions, South Island of New Zealand, 2023

Agricultural sulfur (S) additions are a major anthropogenic source of S to the environment, yet our understanding of the downstream transformations and potential environmental consequences of these S inputs remains incomplete. This dataset includes surface water samples from the Marlborough and Waipara winegrowing regions of the South Island of New Zealand, where frequent applications of S fungicide are widespread. Samples were analyzed for sulfate concentration and S stable isotope ratios – the combination of which forms the S “fingerprint”. We collected surface water samples during the winter of 2023 from a variety of different locations and land use types, including vineyards, forests, pastures, and urban areas. The data table includes water sample sulfate concentrations, sulfate-S stable isotope measurements, and the S stable isotope composition of commonly used S-containing fungicides and fertilizers for comparison.

Mass per tiller, nitrogen concentration, stable isotope ratios for carbon and nitrogen from the 1980-82 Eriophorum vaginatum reciprocal transplant experiment along a latitudinal gradient in interior Alaska collected in July, 2011

In 1980-1982, six transplant gardens were established along a latitudinal gradient in interior Alaska from Eagle Creek, AK in the south to Prudhoe Bay, AK in the north. Three sites, Toolik Lake (TL), Sagwon (SAG), and Prudhoe Bay (PB) are north of the continental divide and the remaining three, Eagle Creek (EC), No Name Creek (NN), and Coldfoot (CF), are south of the continental divide. Each garden consisted of 10 individual Eriophorum vaginatum tussocks transplanted back to their home-site, as well as 10 individuals from each of the other transplant sites. The gardens were harvested in 2011. Important variables are garden name, source population, mass per tiller, nitrogen concentration, and stable isotope ratios for Carbon and Nitrogen.

Rainfall Stable Isotopes collected at Florida International University-MMC (FCE LTER), Miami, Florida, USA, October 2007 - ongoing

δ18O and δ2H values for precipitation collected at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus of Florida International University (FIU) relative to Vienna Standard Mean Ocean Water. Rainfall was collected from the roof of AHC-1 building (25.75772 ºN, 80.37108 ºW) from October 2007 to November 2022 using an Aerochemitrics wet/dry collector. Since December 2022, rainfall has been collected using a Palmex Rain Collector located in the FIU Organic Garden (25.75490 ºN, 80.37985 ºW). Oxygen and hydrogen isotope ratios were measured on a Los Gatos Research DLT-100 Liquid-Water Isotope Analyzer in the Hydrogeology laboratory at FIU since the project inception.

Shark catches (longline), water temperatures, salinities, and dissolved oxygen levels, and stable isotope values in the Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), Florida, USA, May 2005 - ongoing

This dataset provides information on the catches of sharks in the Shark River Slough in relation to physical factors including dissolved oxygen, water temperature, salinity, and distance upstream. Analysis of data collected suggest that distance from the Gulf of Mexico and dissolved have the largest effects on shark catch rates, with most juvenile bull sharks being caught in Tarpon Bay. This dataset includes all sharks caught on longline gear, their morphometric data, and CNS stable isotope analysis for selected individuals.

Dissolved Organic Carbon Stable Isotopes and Lignin Phenols from Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, January 2019 - ongoing

Estuarine and coastal waters are home to more than half of the world's population and provide many social and economic benefits to society. Additionally, these ecosystems are sites of intense carbon cycling and are under pressure from changing land uses and climate. DOM is functionally defined as the OM passed through a 0.7 µm borosilicate glass fiber filter (GF/F) and is primarily made up of viruses, bacteria, colloids, lignins, humic substances, organic acids, and other small organic compounds (Repeta, 2015). Approximately 50% of DOM is generally considered to be dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (Stedmon and Nelson, 2015). Thus, DOC can be used as a proxy for quantifying DOM. Whole water samples were collected monthly from three different transects representing marl-dominated (Taylor Slough), peat-dominated (Shark River Slough), and seagrass-dominated (Florida Bay) environments. The water was filtered using 0.7 µm porosity glass fiber filters, then acidified to pH 2 and stored at 4°C until processing occurred. DOC concentration and the stable isotope ratio of DOC (δ13C-DOC) was measured on an OI Analytical TOC analyzer coupled to an Agilent Delta V plus Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometer using high-temperature combustion (Lalonde et al., 2014). Dissolved vanillyl (vanillin, acetovanillone, vanillin acid), syringyl (syringaldehyde, acetosyringone, syringic acid), cinnamyl (p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid), and 3,5-hydroxybenzoic acid lignin phenols were isolated from ~2 liters of 0.7 µm filtered, acidified (pH 2) water by solid phase extraction (SPE) using 1g PPL cartridges that were pre-conditioned using pH 2 water and methanol. SPE cartridges were extracted using methanol, then dried and redissolved in 2N NaOH. Cupric oxide oxidation and liquid-liquid ethyl acetate extraction were used to extract lignin oxidation products (Hedges and Ertel, 1982, modified by Goñi and Hedges, 1995; Louchouarn et al., 2000; Goñi and Montgomery, 2000; Benner and Kaiser, 2011).
