Steady-state operation dataset of an experimental Wet Cooling Tower pilot plant located at Plataforma Solar de Almería

<p>Repository that contains experimental data obtained from a Wet Cooling Tower (WCT) plant located at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.psa.es/es/index.php">Plataforma Solar de Almer&iacute;a</a>.</p> <p>For the article "Wet cooling tower performance prediction in CSP plants: A comparison between artificial neural networks and Poppe&rsquo;s model", three experimental campaigns were used, quoting from the article:</p> <blockquote> <p>A total of 132 steady-state experimental points have been obtained thanks to the thorough experimentation conducted. Additional steady-state simulations of Miocene Antarctic ice-sheet variability using 3D thermodynamical ice-sheet model IMAU-ICE

<div>&nbsp;</div> <div> <div> <div>We supplement our previous dataset (<a href="https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.939114">doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.939114</a>), with six additional steady-state simulations of the Miocene Antarctic ice sheet using the reference Miocene settings.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>IMAU-ICE was run using a 40x40km grid covering the Antarctic continent. Initial conditions were obtained from reconstructions of the Antarctic bathymetry and bedrock topography pertaining to 23 to 24 million years (Myr) ago (dataset <a href="https://doi.pangaea.de/10.1594/PANGAEA.923109" target="_self">doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.923109</a>). The simulations were forced by climate input data obtained from GENESIS simulations with varying CO2 levels (280 to 840 ppm) and Antarctic ice sheet cover (no ice to a large East-Antarctic ice sheet), and with present-day insolation. We utilized a matrix interpolation method to construct the time-varying climate forcing, based on the prescribed CO2 levels and ice cover simulated by IMAU-ICE.</div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>For each simulation, we provide the run script, 1D output variables including CO2 level and the sea level contribution of the Antarctic ice sheet, and 3D output variables including ice thickness, bedrock and surface height, surface mass balance, basal mass balance, ice velocities, and ice temperatures. Sound stimuli: Considerations for the perceptual evaluation of steady-state and time-varying sounds using psychoacoustic metrics

<p>The current dataset provides all the sound stimuli (wav files) to recreate the figures from the study with the title &quot;Considerations for the perceptual evaluation of steady-state and time-varying sounds using psychoacoustic metrics&quot; by the same authors. There are three datasets: <strong>dataset 1</strong> for fly-by aircraft sounds (directory <em>1-Aircraft-fly-by</em>), <strong>dataset 2</strong> for pass-by train sounds (directory <em>2-Train-pass-by</em>), and <strong>dataset 3</strong> for sounds from a resonating tube called hummer (directory <em>3-Hummer-resonances</em>). A brief description of the datasets is included. The reproduction of figures requires the installation of the sound quality analysis toolbox (SQAT) for MATLAB.</p> <p><strong>Use these data</strong>:<br> &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Download all these data, locate them in a local directory of your computer. If you have MATLAB and you downloaded a local copy of the <strong>SQAT toolbox</strong> (open access at: <a href="https://github.com/ggrecow/SQAT">https://github.com/ggrecow/SQAT</a>) you can recreate the figures of our paper. After downloading and initialising the toolbox (type &#39;startup_SQAT;&#39;, without quotation marks in MATLAB), run the script <strong>copy_sounds_for_pub_Osses2023c_to_SQAT.m</strong>. This last step is not required but recommended. Subsequently, you can run the toolbox script pub_Osses2023c_Forum_Acusticum_SQAT.m and follow the instructions on screen.</p>

<p>A mechanism called steady-state microbunching (SSMB) has been proposed to generate high-repetition, high-power coherent radiation in an electron storage ring. Such a novel phton source will provide unprecedented opportunities for accelerator photon science and technological applications. In this paper, we report the first demonstration of the mechanism of SSMB. This demonstration represents a crucial step towards the implementation of an SSMB-based high-repetition, high-power photon source.</p>

The Dynamic Assimilation Technique measures photosynthetic CO2 response curves with similar fidelity as steady-state approaches in half the time

<p>The net CO<sub>2</sub> assimilation (A) response to intercellular CO<sub>2</sub> concentration (C<sub>i</sub>) is a fundamental measurement in photosynthesis and plant physiology research. The conventional A/Ci protocols rely on steady-state measurements and take 15-40 minute per measurement, limiting data resolution or biological replication. Additionally, there are several CO<sub>2</sub> protocols employed across the literature, without clear consensus as to the optimal protocol or systematic biases in their estimations. We compared the non-steady state Dynamic Assimilation Technique (DAT) protocol and the three most used CO<sub>2</sub> protocols in steady-state measurements, and tested whether different CO<sub>2</sub> protocols lead to systematic differences in estimations of the biochemical limitations to photosynthesis. The DAT protocol reduced the measurement time by almost half without compromising estimations accuracy or precision. The monotonic protocol was the fastest steady-state method. Estimations of biochemical limitations to photosynthesis were very consistent across all CO<sub>2</sub> protocols, with slight differences in ribulose 1·5- bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase carboxylation limitation. The A/Ci curves were not affected by the direction of the change of CO<sub>2</sub> concentration but rather the time spent under TPU-limited conditions. Our results suggest that maximum rate of ribulose 1·5- bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase carboxylation (V<sub>cmax</sub>), linear electron flow for NADPH supply (J) and triose phosphate utilization (TPU) measured using different protocols within the literature are comparable, or at least not systematically different based on the measurement protocol used.</p>

Velocity and temperature dependence of steady-state friction of natural gouge controlled by competing healing mechanisms

<p>The empirical rate- and state-dependent friction law is widely used to explain the frictional resistance of rocks. However, the constitutive parameters vary with temperature and sliding velocity, preventing extrapolation of laboratory results to natural conditions. Here, we explain the frictional properties of natural gouge from the San Andreas Fault, Alpine Fault, and the Nankai Trough from room temperature to $\sim300^\circ$C for a wide range of slip-rates with constant constitutive parameters by invoking the competition between two healing mechanisms with different thermodynamic properties. A transition from velocity-strengthening to velocity-weakening at steady-state can be attained either by decreasing the slip-rate or by increasing temperature. Our study provides a framework to understand the physics underlying the slip-rate and state dependence of friction and the dependence of frictional properties on ambient physical conditions.&nbsp;</p>

Respirometry protocols for avian thermoregulation at high air temperatures: stepped and steady-state profiles yield similar results

<p>Relationships between air temperature (Tair) and avian body temperature (Tb), resting metabolic rate (RMR) and evaporative water loss (EWL) during acute heat exposure can be quantified through respirometry using several approaches. One involves birds exposed to a stepped series of progressively increasing Tair setpoints for short periods (&lt; 20-30 min), whereas a second seeks to achieve steady-state conditions by exposing birds to a single Tair for longer periods (&gt; 1-2 h). To compare these two approaches, we measured Tb, RMR and EWL over Tair = 28 C to 44 C in the dark-capped bulbul (Pycnonotus tricolor). The two protocols yielded indistinguishable values of Tb, RMR and EWL and related variables at most Tair values, revealing that both are appropriate for quantifying avian thermal physiology during heat exposure over the range of Tair in the present study. The stepped protocol, however, has several ethical and practical advantages. </p>

Steady-state time series and code

<p>Pressure-flow travelling waves are a key topic for understanding arterial haemodynamics. However, wave trasmission and reflection processes induced by body posture changes have not been thoroughly explored yet.</p> <p>Current <em>in-vivo</em> research has shown that the amount of wave reflection detected at the central level (ascending aorta, aortic arch) decreases during tilting to the upright position, despite the widely-proved stiffening of the cardiovascular system (CVS). Moreover, it is not known whether the optimized configuration of the arterial system typical of the supine condition - i.e., enabled propagation of direct waves vs. trapping of reflected waves, protecting the heart - is preserved or not after posture changes. </p> <p>To shed light on these aspects, we propose a multiscale modelling approach to inquire into posture-induced arterial wave dynamics elicited by simulated head-up tilting. In spite of remarkable remodelling of the human vasculature following posture changes, our analysis shows that: (i) vessels lumens at arterial bifurcations remain well matched in the forward direction; (ii) the reduced wave reflection observed at the central level seems to be caused by backward propagation of weakened pressure waves produced by cerebral autoregulation; and (iii) backward wave trapping is preserved upon orthostatic stress.</p>

<p>This dataset contains the phantom bSSFP phase-cycled measurement data used in the published article: Sch&auml;per et al. &#39;Pure balanced steady-state free precession imaging (pure bSSFP)&#39;, Magn Reson Med. 2022;87:1886-1893 (doi: 10.1002/mrm.29086).<br> The acquisitions were made with a 3 T MRI system (Magnetom Prisma; Siemens Healthcare, Erlangen, Germany) using a 20 channel head coil.
