Datasets of "Differences in the stool metabolome between vegans and omnivores: analyzing the NIST stool reference material" publication

To gain confidence in results of omic-data acquisitions, methods must be benchmarked by validated quality control materials. We here report data combining both untargeted and targeted metabolomics assays for the analysis of four new human fecal reference materials developed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) for metagenomics and metabolomics measurements. These reference grade test materials (RGTM) were established by NIST based on two different diets and two different samples treatments: homogenized fecal matter from subjects eating vegan diets, stored and submitted in either lyophilized (RGTM 10162) or aqueous form (RGTM 10171); secondly, homogenized fecal matter from subjects eating omnivore diets, stored and submitted in either lyophilized (RGTM 10172) or aqueous form (RGTM 10173). We used four untargeted metabolomics assays (lipidomics, primary metabolites, biogenic amines and polyphenols) and one targeted assay on bile acids.

A non-redundant catalog of 3,816 genomes with at least 75% completeness and no more than 15% contamination assembled from metagenomes. Samples of 976 metagenomes were obtained from patients receiving immunotherapy for the treatment of different types of cancers.

Metabolic alterations in Strongyloidiasis stool samples unveil potential biomarkers of infection_dataset

Strongyloidiasis, a parasitosis caused by Strongyloides stercoralis in humans, is a very prevalent infection in tropical or subtropical areas. Gaps on public health strategies corroborates to the high global incidence of strongyloidiasis especially due to challenges involved on its diagnosis. Based on the lack of a gold-standard diagnostic tool, we aimed to present a metabolomic study for the assessment of stool metabolic alterations. Stool samples were collected from 25 patients segregated into positive for strongyloidiasis (n = 10) and negative control (n = 15) and prepared for direct injection high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis. Using metabolomics workflow, 18 metabolites were annotated increased or decreased in strongyloidiasis condition, from which a group of 5 biomarkers comprising caprylic acid, mannitol, glucose, lysophosphatidylinositol and hydroxy-dodecanoic acid demonstrated accuracy over 89% to be explored as potential markers. The observed metabolic alteration in stool samples indicates involvement of microbiota remodeling, parasite constitution, and host response during S. stercoralis infection.

Dogon Stool
Collection and item number: Robert Zigler Collection, #363 Origin: Dogon people, West Africa Size: 10 5/8"H x 10 "W Media: Wood Note: A "Tellem style" three-figure caryatid stool. The wood's patina is crusty, yet the seat is smooth, exhibiting well- defined incised carving. This contrast brings into question the object's integrity, or the skill of the man who produced it. Collection and item number: Possibly the Donald and Olive Kessler Collection, #168 Origin: West Africa, thought to be Liberian, c. 1961 Size: 15"L x 6 5/8"W x 6"D Media: Wood with incised design Note: Sometimes a series of stools in varying heights offered seating for individuals of corresponding social rank. Walking Stick / Picnic Stool
This handy contraption doubled as a walking stick and a seat. Made by the timber company Enso-Gutzeit Oy for the Helsinki Olympic Games of 1952, it came to good use at the marathon and the 50-kilometre walk race, which took place on a highway. After seeing the athletes on their way to the turning point, the spectators had to wait for a long time before catching a glimpse of them again on their way back to the Stadium. The length of the stick is 89 centimetres. The diameter of the stool is only 23 cm, which makes it rather uncomfortable for an adult person. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Data from: Bristol stool scale: Patient versus expert score data

The Bristol Stool Scale (BSS) is one of the most commonly used tools for evaluation of stool consistency. BSS ranges from 1-7 and each score is assigned to a given consistency of the feces. Self-reported characterizations can differ from an expert evaluation, and the reliability of BSS is unclear. The dataset consists of BSS scores by patients with inflammatory bowel disease collected throughout a 3-year follow-up, matched with scores assessed by experienced bioengineers (experts). The purpose of the study where data was collected was to compare patient scores to expert scores and hence determine the reliability of the BSS.

Evaluation of synovial calprotectin by using a lateral flow stool test for the diagnosis of prosthetic joint infections

The analysis of synovial fluid is a crucial step in the diagnostic process of prosthetic joint infections (PJI) and several studies illustrated the efficacy of synovial calprotectin in supporting the diagnosis of PJI. In this study, synovial calprotectin was analyzed by a commercial stool test to explore whether the detected levels might predict PJIs. The synovial fluids of 55 were analyzed. Calprotectin levels were compared to other synovial biomarkers of PJI. Of the 55 synovial fluids, 13 patients were diagnosed with PJI and 42 with an aseptic failure of the implant. The specificity, sensitivity, and AUC of calprotectin resulted 0.90, 0.85, and 0.86 (95%CI: 0.72-0.99), respectively with a set threshold of 226.5 µg/g. The values of calprotectin had a moderate and statistically relevant correlation with the synovial leucocyte counts (rs = 0.54, p = 0.0003) and percentage of synovial neutrophils (rs = 0.68, p = 0.0000). From this analysis, it can be concluded that synovial calprotectin is a valuable biomarker that correlates with other established indicator of local infection, and the use of a commercial lateral flow stool test could be a cost-effective strategy delivering rapid and reliable results and supporting the diagnostic process of PJI.
