A map selection of wigeon stopover sites (core areas) based on wetland expert knowledge
<p>Stopover areas (core areas only) along the migration route of wigeons tracked with GPS transmitters were selected when they exhibited forests on more than 50% of their total surface or had less than 50% cover by water and/or wetland on the ESA’s global land cover map. We created a sample of 5,630 regions of interest (3,403 for training and 2,227 for validation), delineated with polygons assigned to land classes listed in the Table 1. We used archives of Google Earth, ESRI, and BING satellites for the photointerpretation of the land classes as described in Table 1. The classification was performed with a Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument, Level-2A image collection in Google Earth Engine (GEE) through the R-package Rgee to create a batch process applying the GEE Random forest classifier to each selected core home range. The cloudless (maximum 3%) images were selected within the period from 01/06/2021 to 30/09/2021. The optimal number of trees was estimated at 100 for an out of bag error of 14%. The overall accuracy on the validation sample was 82 %. </p>

<p>Loss and/or deterioration of refuelling habitats have caused population declines in many migratory bird species, but whether this results from unequal mortality among individuals varying in migration traits remains to be shown. Based on 13 years of body mass and size data of great knots (<em>Calidris tenuirostris</em>) at a stopover site of the Yellow Sea, combined with resightings of individuals marked at this stopover site along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, we assessed year to year changes in annual apparent survival rates, and how apparent survival differed between migration phenotypes (their i.e. migration timing and fuel stores). The measurements occurred over a period of habitat loss and/or deterioration in this flyway. We found that the annual apparent survival rates of great knots rapidly declined from 2006 to 2018, late-arriving individuals with small fuel stores exhibiting the lowest apparent survival rate. There was an advancement in mean arrival date and an increase in the mean fuel load of stopping birds over the study period. Our results suggest that late-arriving individuals with small fuel loads were selected against. Thus, habitat loss and/or deterioration at staging sites may cause changes in the composition of migratory phenotypes at the population-level.</p>

1. Migration counts are popular indices used to monitor population trends over time. Advanced analytical methods for estimating abundance of unmarked, open populations now incorporate population growth models and simultaneously test for covariate effects on abundance and detection probability. However, estimating population abundance at a staging site is complicated by daily immigration and emigration of unmarked individuals. 2. We applied a set of generalized N-mixture models to simulated count data to test their applicability for transient populations. Using simulated datasets, parameters were unbiased when the apparent survival rate varied within a season or was mis-specified in a model, but not when the immigration or detection probability was mis-specified. 3. With knowledge from the simulated data, we applied these models to daily counts of staging migratory shorebirds and estimated daily abundances accounting for variation in the detection and immigration rates. Daily counts of ruddy turnstones (Arenaria interpres) staging at Westhampton Island, New York, were collected during northward migration (1997–1999). We tested the effects of weather and tides on detection probability, and we modeled within-season variation in immigration rates as a function of time. 4. Covariates affecting the detection probability differed among years, but tide height consistently was correlated with detection probability. Accounting for detection and immigration rates, the predicted maximum single-day populations of ruddy turnstones were 172%, 165%, and 129% of the observed counts for each year. 5. Synthesis and applications. Management and conservation plans for migratory species require abundance estimates that are near the true population size though they are difficult to obtain. Our study is the first empirical application of the generalized N-mixture model that incorporates temporal trends in immigration and estimates daily abundance of a staging unmarked migratory population. Correct estimation of population sizes and the environmental factors affecting them can aid the conservation prioritization of species and staging sites. Moreover, the use of generalized N-mixture models can improve our understanding of the environmental factors that shape migratory movements.
Feeding sites characteristics of the Northern shoveler Spatula clypeata in prenuptial stopover
<p><span>Dabbling ducks choose a multitude of habitats throughout their life cycle. This choice depends on the abundance, diversity, and accessibility of food resources. Wetlands such as the Marais breton and Marais poitevin (Atlantic coast, France) are common habitats for several Anatidae, especially during their prenuptial migration. However, studies on the food ecology of Anatidae at stopover sites are limited. Therefore, this study focused on the Northern shoveler Spatula clypeata, a species that regularly inhabits the two marshes during the breeding and migration periods and is highly dependent on freshwater invertebrates as the food resource because of its bill morphology. Fifteen Northern shoveler were equipped with a GPS/GSM tag and monitored during their prenuptial migration. The study objectives were to understand the strategies used by the Northern shoveler to select the foraging sites and describe the characteristics of these sites (such as freshwater invertebrates' abundance and diversity and the habitat type). In addition, home range (HR), space use, and habitat selection were studied.</span></p>

Island biogeography theory and the urban landscape: stopover site selection by the silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans)
<p>Many migratory bats require forested sites for roosting and foraging along their migration path, but increased urbanization and intensive agricultural practices may reduce the availability of stopover sites. Urban forests may provide important stopover habitat, maintaining landscape connectivity in regions where the majority of natural habitat has been cleared for development. Island biogeography theory can be applied to urbanized temperate forest biomes where small urban forests represent islands separated from the larger "mainland" forest. We used acoustic monitoring during the fall migration period to investigate the use of urban forest habitat by the migratory species <i>Lasionycteris noctivagans</i> (Le Conte 1831)<i>.</i> We predicted that recorded activity would have a positive relationship with forest patch area and shape and a negative relationship with isolation from other forest patches, as suggested by island biogeography theory. We observed greater activity at larger forest patches, and although relationships for shape and isolation were not statistically supported the observed patterns were consistent with predictions. Our results demonstrate the need for more in-depth research on the habitat requirements for both migratory and resident bat species and the impact that ongoing urbanization has on local bat populations.</p>
