Survival Data of Strengthened and Non-Strengthened Oysters on Two Restored Reefs in Georgia, USA
The eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica, is known to respond to chemical cues from their predators by strengthening their shell in defense. The chemical cues homarine and trigonelline, found in the urine of blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus, are two metabolic waste products known to cause this inducible defense in juvenile oysters. We tested whether this shell strengthening defense is beneficial for juvenile oysters in a restored reef setting by inducing oyster spat with chemical cues, placing them onto a restored reef and measuring their survival for 50-100 days. The first reef location is a previously restored reef (approximately 10 years old) with limited physical exposure to wind waves and boat wake. Juvenile oysters were placed at this site in September of 2021 and survival was measured for 49 days. The second reef location is a newly restored oyster reef (less than 1 year old) that acts as a living shoreline, with significant exposure to boat wake and wind waves. Juvenile oysters were protected from predation using mesh wrapping with an opening of 1 square cm and placed at the reef site in April 2023, where survival was monitored for 103 days. Site locations: Reef 1 (dock site) - 31.988948°, -81.024001° Reef 2 (living shoreline reef) - 32.067957°,-80.985005°

P-elements strengthen reproductive isolation within the Drosophila simulans species complex
Determining mechanisms that underlie reproductive isolation is key to understanding how species boundaries are maintained in nature. Transposable elements (TEs) are ubiquitous across eukaryotic genomes. However, the role of TEs in modulating the strength of reproductive isolation between species is poorly understood. Several species of Drosophila have been found to harbor P-elements (PEs), yet only D. simulans is known to be currently polymorphic for their presence in wild populations. PEs can cause reproductive isolation between PE-containing (P) and PE-lacking (M) lineages of the same species. Here, we use the simulans species complex to assess whether differences in PE status between D. simulans and its sister species, which do not harbor PEs, contribute to multiple barriers to gene flow between species. We show that crosses involving a P-D. simulans father and an M-mother from a sister species exhibit lower F1 female fecundity than crosses involving an M-D. simulans father and an M-sister-species mother. We also find that another TE, I-element, might play a minor role on determining the frequency of dysgenesis between species. Our results suggest that the presence of PEs in a species can strengthen isolation from its sister species, providing evidence that TEs can play a role in isolation. --

NEMARCO project: Dataset for the publication "Solidification Path, Strengthening Mechanisms and Hardness of Ni-Cr-Si-Fe-B Self-Fluxing Alloys Obtained by Laser-Directed Energy Deposition (LMD)"

LMD dataset

This dataset gathers data from different parts of the Laser Metal Deposition metal Additive Manufacturing process (DED-LB). The dataset covers not only the process development data for samples manufacturing and monitored data of the melt pool size during the process, but also the metrics associated to the powder feedstock consumption, energy consumption and process efficiency.

Motivation

Nickel-based Ni-Cr-Si-B self-fluxing alloys are excellent candidates to replace Cobalt-based alloys in aeronautical components. In this work, metal additive manufacturing by directed energy deposition using a laser beam (DED-LB, also known as LMD) and gas-atomized powders as a material feedstock is presented as a potential manufacturing route for the complex processing of these alloys. This research deals with the advanced material characterization of these alloys obtained by LMD and the study and understanding of their solidification paths and strengthening mechanisms.

Data from: Economy of scale: third partner strengthens a keystone ant-plant mutualism
While foundation species can stabilize ecosystems at landscape scales, their ability to persist is often underlain by keystone interactions occurring at smaller scales. Acacia drepanolobium is a foundation tree, comprising >95% of woody cover in East African black-cotton savanna ecosystems. Its dominance is underlain by a keystone mutualistic interaction with several symbiotic ant species in which it provides housing (swollen thorns) and carbohydrate-rich nectar from extra-floral nectaries (EFN). In return, it gains protection from catastrophic damage from mega-herbivores. Crematogaster mimosae is the ecologically dominant symbiotic ant in this system, also providing the highest protection services. In addition to tending EFN, C. mimosae tend scale insects for carbohydrate-rich honeydew. We investigated the role of scale insects in this specialized ant-plant interaction. Specifically, does this putatively redundant third partner strengthen the ant-plant mutualism by making the ant a better protector of the tree? Or does it weaken the mutualism by being costly to the tree while providing no additional benefit to the ant-plant mutualism? We coupled observational surveys with two scale-manipulation experiments and found evidence that this third partner strengthens the ant-plant mutualism. Trees with scale insects experimentally removed experienced a 2.5X increase in elephant damage compared to trees with scale insects present over 10 months. Reduced protection was driven by scale removal causing a decrease in ant colony size and per capita baseline activity and defensive behavior. We also found that ants increased scale-tending and the density of scale insects on trees when EFN were experimentally reduced. Thus, in this system, scale insects and EFN are likely complementary, rather than redundant, resources with scale insects benefitting ants when EFN production is low (such as during annual dry periods in this semi-arid ecosystem). This study reveals that a third-partner strengthens an ant-plant mutualism that serves to stabilize a whole ecosystem.
Positive species interactions strengthen in a high-CO2 ocean

Negative interactions among species are a major force shaping natural communities and are predicted to strengthen as climate change intensifies. Similarly, positive interactions are anticipated to intensify, and could buffer the consequences of climate-driven disturbances. We used in situ experiments at volcanic CO2 vents within a temperate rocky reef to show that ocean acidification can drive community reorganization through indirect and direct positive pathways. A keystone species, the algal-farming damselfish Parma alboscapularis, enhanced primary productivity through its weeding of algae whose productivity was also boosted by elevated CO2. The accelerated primary productivity translated into increased densities of primary consumers (herbivorous invertebrates), which indirectly supported increased secondary consumers densities (predatory fish) (i.e. strengthening of bottom-up fuelling). However, this keystone species also reduced predatory fish densities through behavioural interference, releasing invertebrate prey from predation pressure and enabling a further boost in prey densities (i.e. weakening of top-down control). We uncover a novel mechanism where a keystone herbivore mediates bottom-up and top-down processes simultaneously to boost populations of a co-existing herbivore, resulting in altered food web interactions and predator populations under future ocean acidification.
