A comprehensive phylogeny of Pieridae butterflies reveals a strong correlation between diversification and temperature

<p><span>Temperature is thought to be a key factor influencing global species richness patterns. We investigate the link between temperature and diversification in the butterfly Family Pieridae by combining next-generation sequences and published molecular data with fine-grained distribution data. We sampled nearly 600 pierid species to build the most comprehensive molecular phylogeny of the Family and curated a distribution dataset of more than 800,000 occurrences. We found strong evidence that species in environments with more stable daily temperatures or cooler maximum temperatures in the warm seasons have higher speciation rates. Furthermore, speciation and extinction rates decreased in tandem with global temperatures through geological time, resulting in a constant net diversification.</span></p>

Density, parasitism, and sexual reproduction are strongly correlated in lake Daphnia populations

<p>Many organisms can reproduce both asexually and sexually. For cyclical parthenogens, periods of asexual reproduction are punctuated by bouts of sexual reproduction, and the shift from asexual to sexual reproduction has large impacts on fitness and population dynamics. We studied populations of <i>Daphnia dentifera</i> to determine the amount of investment in sexual reproduction as well as the factors associated with variation in investment in sex. To do so, we tracked host density, infections by nine different parasites, and sexual reproduction in 15 lake populations of <i>D. dentifera</i> for three years. Sexual reproduction was seasonal, with male and ephippial female production beginning as early as late September and generally increasing through November. However, there was substantial variation in the prevalence of sexual individuals across populations, with some populations remaining entirely asexual throughout the study period and others shifting almost entirely to sexual females and males. We found strong relationships between density, prevalence of infection, parasite species richness, and sexual reproduction in these populations. However, strong collinearity between density, parasitism, and sexual reproduction means that further work will be required to disentangle the causal mechanisms underlying these relationships.</p>

Data for: Strong phenotypic trait correlations between mating partners do not result from assortative mating in wild great tits (Parus major)

<p>There is considerable debate about the occurrence of assortative mating between phenotypic traits measured within natural populations. Meta-analyses have implied that assortative mating occurs generally in natural populations but recent work indicates these conclusions largely result from biased data. Specifically, estimates of phenotypic correlations between mating partners do not solely result from non-random associations between individual-level traits of partners but also from other biological processes (joint phenotypic plasticity, indirect genetic effects), methodological practices (observer bias), and other unexplained residual correlations (e.g. correlated measurement error). This paper puts this critique to test. First, we estimated the overall phenotypic correlation between phenotypic traits of mating partners for a wild population of great tits. Second, we estimated various key variance components to reveal the extent to which phenotypic correlations between partners resulted from assortative mating, reversible plasticity, social partner effects, and methodological practices. We performed our analyses for a range of phenotypic traits (body mass, breathing rate, exploration behaviour, wing and tarsus length) to derive general conclusions not hinging on the specifics of the traits involved. Our analyses support the conclusion that patterns of assortative mating exist at first glance but occur because of the biasing effects of correlated residuals likely caused by a combination of phenotypic responses to unknown environmental factors or measurement error – not because of intrinsic patterns of assortative mating.</p>

Strong evidence for positive and negative correlational selection revealed by recreating ancestral variation

<p>The study of adaptation helps explain biodiversity and predict future evolution. Yet the process of adaptation can be difficult to observe due to limited phenotypic variation in contemporary populations. Furthermore, the scarcity of male fitness estimates has made it difficult to both understand adaptation and evaluate sexual conflict hypotheses. We addressed both issues in our study of two anther position traits in wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum): anther exsertion (long filament − corolla tube lengths) and anther separation (long − short filament lengths). These traits affect pollination efficiency and are particularly interesting due to the unusually high correlations among their component traits. We measured selection through male and female fitness on wild radish plants from populations artificially selected to recreate ancestral variation in each anther trait. We found little evidence for conflicts between male and female function. We found strong evidence for stabilizing selection on anther exsertion and disruptive selection on anther separation, indicating positive and negative correlational selection on the component traits. Intermediate levels of exsertion are likely an adaptation to best contact small bees. The function of anther separation is less clear, but future studies might investigate pollen placement on pollinators and compare species possessing multiple stamen types.</p>

Data from: Lizard richness in mainland China is more strongly correlated with energy and climatic stability than with diversification rates

<p><strong><span>Aim</span></strong><span>: Contemporary environmental, historical, and evolutionary factors are increasingly used to decipher the drivers of spatial patterns of species richness. Evidence of such correlations for Chinese reptiles is scarce and poorly understood. We therefore explored the validity of the environmental capacity, historical climatic stability, and diversification rates hypotheses on Chinese lizard richness.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Location</strong>:</span><span> Mainland China</span></p> <p><span><strong>Taxon</strong>:</span><span> Squamata: Sauria</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span></strong><span>: We mapped the distribution ranges of all 237 lizards in mainland China using a combination of different datasets. We used current environmental conditions (ambient energy, environmental productivity, and habitat heterogeneity), historical climate stability indices (long-term: since ~3.3 Ma and short-term: since the Last Glacial Maximum), and mean tip diversification rates to test whether current environmental conditions, historical climate change, and diversification rates drive contemporary richness patterns of lizards in China. We applied piecewise structural equation models (pSEM) to jointly evaluate our hypotheses, considering direct and indirect effects.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong><span>:  Chinese lizards showed latitudinal diversity gradients. We found consistent support for contemporary climatic and environmental factors' relationships with richness. Richness was also positively correlated with short-term climatic stability, but less so with long-term stability. Diversification rates were only seldom found to be positively correlated with lizard richness.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Main conclusions</strong>:</span><span> Our results support the</span> <span>environmental capacity and historical climate hypotheses, which link high richness to highly productive warm and stable regions (and low richness to cold and unstable regions). We conclude that post-speciation dispersal and short-term climatic oscillations quickly swamp the long-term signal of diversification rates and climatic fluctuations, creating strong current climate-richness associations.</span></p>

Strong and weak cross-sex correlations govern the quantitative-genetic architecture of social group choice in Drosophila melanogaster

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>When genotypes differ in niche-constructing traits, genotypes are expected to differ in which environments they experience, providing a novel causal relationship between genotypes, environments, and behavior. Such genetic variation in niche construction (or, more precisely, environment construction) is predicted to be especially important for social environments, yet the quantitative-genetic parameters governing such variation is still poorly understood. Here, we examine genetic variation and cross-sex genetic correlations for social environment-constructing behaviors. We focus on whether genetic variation in patch use—the tendency to spend time near food patches where conspecifics may be present—and group-size preference—the specific group size chosen when individuals are affiliating—is correlated or decoupled across sexes in the fruit fly, <i>Drosophila melanogaster</i>. Across three choice treatments, we find genotype and sex differences in how much time individuals spend near patches, and which group sizes they prefer. We find that the genetic basis of patch use is strongly coupled across sexes, whereas the genetic basis of group-size preference is completely <i>de</i>coupled across sexes. We discuss how these findings augment and complicate our understanding of the evolutionary genetics of social behaviors.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>
