A data set from an extensive experimental benchmark study of the Hell Bridge Test Arena subject to imposed damage

A data set from an extensive experimental benchmark study of the Hell Bridge Test Arena (HBTA), a full-scale steel bridge subject to imposed damage, has been established. The data set includes organized dynamic response and load measurement data of the bridge under different structural state conditions, where the structural state conditions range from an undamaged (reference) state to known damage states. Furthermore, the data set includes acceleration and strain data from the response monitoring and acceleration data from the load monitoring, where a modal vibration shaker is used as an excitation source. The data is collected in one h5-file (hierarchical data format version 5) with a sampling rate of 100 Hz. Signal processing and resampling of the data has been performed according to the description provided in the references below. The data set is now published in this open-access data repository and can be accessed and downloaded freely. As such, the data set provides an important benchmark to the scientific community within bridge damage detection and SHM.

Data from: Ecological forensic testing: Using multiple primers for eDNA detection of marine vertebrates in an estuarine lagoon subject to anthropogenic influences

Many critical aquatic habitats are in close proximity to human activity (i.e., adjacent to residences, docks, marinas, etc.), and it is vital to monitor biodiversity in these and similar areas that are subject to ongoing urbanization, pollution, and other environmental disruptions. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is an accessible, non-invasive genetic technique used to detect and monitor species diversity and is a particularly useful approach in areas where traditional biodiversity monitoring methods (e.g., visual surveys or video surveillance) are challenging to conduct. In this study, we implemented an eDNA approach that used a combination of three distinct PCR primer sets to detect marine vertebrates within a canal system of Biscayne Bay, Florida, an ecosystem representative of challenging sampling conditions and a myriad of impacts from urbanization. We detected fish species from aquarium, commercial, and recreational fisheries, as well as invasive, cryptobenthic, and endangered vertebrate species, including charismatic marine mammals such as the protected West Indian manatee, Trichechus manatus. Our results support the potential for eDNA analyses to supplement traditional biodiversity monitoring methods and ultimately serve as an important tool for ecosystem management. This approach minimizes stress or disturbance to organisms and removes the intrinsic risk and logical limitations of SCUBA diving, snorkeling, or deploying sensitive equipment in areas that are subject to high vessel traffic and/or low visibility. Overall, this work sets the framework to understand how biodiversity may change over different spatial and temporal scales in an aquatic ecosystem heavily influenced by urbanization and validates the use of eDNA as a complementary approach to traditional ecological monitoring methods.

Experimental data: Single- and double-wythe brick masonry walls subjected to four-point bending tests under different support conditions: Simply supported, rigid, non-rigid

This dataset contains the results of laboratory quasi-static monotonic four-point bending tests conducted at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden on eleven natural-scale unreinforced brick masonry walls. The walls were spanning vertically between two reinforced concrete slabs and were tested under three different support conditions defined according to the American manual UFC 3-340-02: simply supported, rigid, non-rigid. The influence of these support conditions on the out-of-plane behavior of the walls was studied on elements with varying thickness – single and double wythe – and subjected to different levels of axial compression (or overload). The walls were tested inside of a bi-axial test setup that allowed not only the lateral, out-of-plane force but also the axial, arching action to be measured throughout the tests. Optical full-field displacement measurements were also acquired by two systems of cameras making use of the 2D and 3D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique.

The data generated from these tests are made here available to support further investigations on masonry structures subjected to extreme lateral, out-of-plane actions. The dataset includes 3 compressed folders, ordered from 01 to 03, along with an auxiliary document describing the content and organization of the dataset.

The data presented here are described in the following research article:

Godio M, Flansbjer M, Williams Portal N (2023). Tests on Thin Reinforced Concrete Walls Subjected to In-plane and Out-of-plane Cyclic Loading - General

The entire dataset describes an experimental campaign on five thin T-shaped reinforced concrete walls, including: details on the test units, materials, test setup, loading protocol, instrumentation, main features of each unit’s response, organization of the provided test data, and examples of derived data. The tests aimed at assessing the influence of wall thickness on member stability, the role of lap splices on damage distribution and displacement ductility, and the effects of the simultaneous application of out-of-plane loading on the member response.
