Geochemical Characterizations for Identifying Fugitive Dust Deposition and Enrichment of Surface and Subsurface Subalpine Soils from Phosphorus Mining, Eastern Ashley National Forest, Utah, 2022-2023.

Phosphorus is a non-renewable resource essential for all life. Anthropogenic alterations to the phosphorus cycle have led to widespread phosphorus pollution, and the unsustainable management of P has led to the threat of global depletion of phosphorus resources. Thus, accounting for the natural and anthropogenic flow paths of phosphorus is essential for its conservation and pollution reduction. One such source of human alteration to the phosphorus-cycle is phosphate rock mining. Mining, however, has many adverse environmental effects, including widespread fugitive dust emissions. Dust collection in the Ashley National Forest of northeastern Utah, proximate to a surface phosphorus mine, has shown phosphorus concentrations in dust more than four times that of other regional samples. Elevated phosphorus in dust near active surface mining suggests that mining emissions may alter the natural phosphorus loading of the soils in the National Forest through dust deposition; however, no research has been done to identify the abundance and range of mine-attributable phosphorus enrichment in the soils surrounding phosphate mining activities. The combined geospatial and geochemical approach of this study shows that surface soil phosphorus concentrations were found to be enriched above naturally occurring levels up to 6.5 km from mining activity (enrichment factor > 1.5), with the most significant enrichment occurring within the first 3 km (enrichment factor > 2). On average, surface phosphorus concentrations were significantly enriched by 25% within 6.5 km of phosphorus mining activity. Observed phosphorus enrichment was positively correlated with the presence of fluorapatite in the soil, which is the primary phosphorus-mineral extracted from the nearby mine. Further, bioavailable phosphorus concentrations were also higher for the soils that were enriched in phosphorus. This study shows that fugitive emissions associated with the surface mining of phosphate rock are a significan

Dataset for the manuscript "Amapari Marker Band Metal-Enrichments: Potential Mechanisms and Implications for Surface and Subsurface Water and Weathering in Gale crater"

<p>The dataset for the main manuscript contains three CSV files: list of long distance remote micro images (LDRMIs), the ChemCam chemical data, and the alpha particle X ray spectrometer (APXS) chemical data. The LDRMI csv lists two sets of data, one for the sol (Mars solar day), sequence identifier, and target name of LDRMIs that target the Amapari Marker Band (AMB). These are represented as green points on manuscript Figure 1. The second list are for LDRMI images that did not specifically target the AMB, but contain the AMB, and these are orange points on manuscript Figure 1. The ChemCam data file has metadata for each observation point in a ChemCam target: file name, spacecraft clock, observation number, stratigraphic member, rock type, target distance, and total of all spectral channels. Chemical information includes: the oxide chemistry (oxide wt%), uncertainty (RMSEP accuracy and shot-to-shot precision), minor element quantification, and minor element uncertainty (ppm), preliminary sulfate composition (without uncertainty and only provided up to sol 3778), peak areas for some elements (Cu, Zn, and Cr). The oxide sum includes all oxides and elements for which we have quantitative data. Spectral unmixing qualitative values are listed for each element. Derived data includes the corrected MgO, Na2O, and CaO in both mol and oxide wt% (values before and after correction are provided), and the calculated alteration index. Derived data is only calculated for AMB bedrock targets (does not include veins or mixed vein-rock targets with elevated CaO). The APXS data sheet provides sol, target name, oxide data, and uncertainties for the drill tailings observations, and the derived data for each target.</p>

Unlocking the Fluorine-Free Buoy Effect: Surface-Enriched Ruthenium Polypyridine Complexes in Ionic Liquids, DOI: 10.1002/open.202400092

<p>Controlling the local concentration of metal complexes at the surface of ionic liquids (ILs) is a highly sought-after objective due to its pivotal implications in supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) catalysis. Equally important is to avoid per- and polyfluorinated substances due to environmental concerns. Herein, we investigate the surface enrichment of Ru polypyridyl complexes with fluorine-free alkylic side groups of varying lengths and shapes, using the hydrophilic IL [C2C1Im][OAc] as solvent. Additional charged carboxylate groups are included into the polypyridyl ligands to increase the solubility of the complex in the IL. When the ligand system is functionalized with long and hydrophobic alkyl side chains, the complex predominantly localizes at the IL/vacuum interface, as deduced from angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Conversely, in the presence of short or more bulky substituents, no surface enrichment is observed. This buoy-like behaviour with fluorine-free side groups is explored for 0.05 %mol to 1 %mol solutions. Intriguingly, surface saturation occurs at approximately 0.5 %mol, which is beneficial to the efficient operation of catalytic systems featuring high surface areas, such as SILP catalysts.</p>

Tailoring the Surface Enrichment of a Pt Catalyst in Ionic Liquid Solutions by Choice of the Solvent, DOI: 10.1002/admi.202301085

<p>The so-called buoy-effect, that is, the targeted surface enrichment of a Pt catalyst dissolved in ionic liquids (ILs), is achieved by attaching perfluorinated alkyl chains to the ligand system, which drags the metal complex toward the interface. Using angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it is demonstrated how this surface enrichment can be tailored by variation of the solvent IL. In [CnC1Im][PF6] ILs (<em>n</em> = 2, 4, 8), the surface is fully saturated with the complex at 10%mol bulk content, while in [C4C1Im][Tf2N] only at 20%mol saturation is observed. At low catalyst concentrations of 1%mol, where saturation is not yet reached, the enrichment increases with decreasing length of the IL alkyl chain. As a general rule, the degree of surface enrichment decreases with the decrease in surface tension of the solvent IL, that is, in the order [C2C1Im][PF6] &gt; [C4C1Im][PF6] &gt; [C8C1Im][PF6] &gt; [C4C1Im][Tf2N]. In ILs with very low surface tension, enrichment is even suppressed. These results reveal the surface tension of the solvent IL as rational parameter for tailoring the interfacial structure of IL-based catalyst systems, such as supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) catalysis, where the nature of the IL/gas interface is expected to strongly influence the performance of the process.</p>

Understanding the Buoy Effect of Surface-Enriched Pt Complexes in Ionic Liquids: A Combined ARXPS and Pendant Drop Study**, DOI: 10.1002/cphc.202300612

<p>Recently, we demonstrated that Pt catalyst complexes dissolved in the ionic liquid (IL) [C4C1Im][PF6] can be deliberately enriched at the IL surface by introducing perfluorinated substituents, which act like buoys dragging the metal complex towards the surface. Herein, we extend our previous angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) studies at complex concentrations between 30 and 5&thinsp;%mol down to 1&thinsp;%mol and present complementary surface tension pendant drop (PD) measurements under ultraclean vacuum conditions. This combination allows for connecting the microscopic information on the IL/gas interface derived from ARXPS with the macroscopic property surface tension. The surface enrichment of the Pt complexes is found to be most pronounced at 1&thinsp;%mol. It also displays a strong temperature dependence, which was not observed for 5&thinsp;%mol and above, where the surface is already saturated with the complex. The surface enrichment deduced from ARXPS is also reflected by the pronounced decrease in surface tension with increasing concentration of the catalyst. We furthermore observe by ARXPS and PD a much stronger surface affinity of the buoy-complex as compared to the free ligands in solution. Our results are highly interesting for an optimum design of IL-based catalyst systems with large contact areas to the surrounding reactant/product phase, such as in supported IL phase (SILP) catalysis.</p>
